RVT Certification
Professionals who hold the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) credential in North Carolina are individuals who have:
- Graduated from an AVMA accredited 2 or 4 year veterinary medical technology program.
- Taken and passed both the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and the North Carolina Veterinary Technician State Exam (NCVTSE).
With experience, the RVT credential holds solid potential for advancement to management positions, especially when combined with a bachelor's degree.
Although most RVTs work in small animal hospitals, they are also found in other veterinary settings including:
- Large animal practice
- Emergency medicine
- Avian and exotic hospitals
- Zoos and aquariums
- Pharmaceuticals
- Military and police forces
- Research and reference laboratories
- Higher learning institutions
- Any organization that centers around the veterinary environment

NC Board Exam
North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board (NCVMB)
The NC State exam consists of 100 questions and is based on the NC Veterinary Practice Act (General Statutes and Administrative Rules) governing the practice of veterinary medicine in North Carolina. There are 70 true/false and 30 multiple choice questions. Candidates must receive a minimum score of 70 to pass this exam. Results for this examination are known in approximately one (1) week. The fee is $50 and is non-refundable or applicable toward a future exam.

Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
Most state and provincial agencies use the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to evaluate the competency of entry-level veterinary technicians and require a passing score for a veterinary technician to be credentialed.
