What You’ll Learn

Students enrolled in the Library and Information Technology degree program will develop professional skills that prepare them to work in a library setting in a number of different areas. The program covers all main types of library work including public services functions, such as circulation and reference, and technical services functions, such as cataloging and collection development. Classes in the program have a heavy emphasis on the technology and technical skills necessary to successfully work in modern libraries, including database searching, online public access catalogs, assisting technology, social media, apps, and more. Note: all classes are online; a work-based learning experience is required and can be done at a library local to the student.

Curriculum Guide

Students enrolled in the Library and Information Technology diploma will get an overview of the main aspects of library work including circulation, reference, cataloging, and collection development. Less intensive than the degree program, the diploma is for people who want an introduction to the career without the time requirement of the degree. Note: all classes are online; a work-based learning experience is required and can be done at a library local to the student.

Students enrolled in the Library Cataloging certificate will get an overview of library cataloging rules and processes, which will prepare them to work as a cataloger in any number of libraries.

Students enrolled in the Library Programs certificate will get an overview of planning and executing library programs, such as children’s reading programs, adult programs, teen programs, and more.

Students enrolled in the Library Public Services certificate program will get an overview of all of the different public services jobs in a library, including circulation and reference.

Students enrolled in the Library Technical Services certificate will get an overview of all of the different technical services jobs in a library, including cataloging, collection development, and database management.
