Students can earn an associate degree in only two years. This track allows students to complete two years at the community college and then two years at the university. This degree is for students who wish to pursue a 4-year degree in the field of child development, but who do not intend to earn their BK (Birth through Kindergarten) teaching license.

Students can earn an Associate in Science Teacher Preparation degree in only two years, and then transfer to a 4-year institution and enter as a junior. This degree allows students to pursue a teaching degree in the K-12 field of education. This degree focuses more on math and science coursework.

Partnerships

To make your transfer even easier, CCCC has extensive partnerships with all public universities and most private colleges and universities in North Carolina. Smooth transfer is facilitated by the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. In addition, CCCC has additional enhanced transfer partnerships that may permit students to be exempt from application fees and to participate in special programming and opportunities prior to transfer.

CCCC has an excellent advising program and award-winning advisors work with students in the Associate in Arts–Teacher Preparation and Associate in Science–Teacher Preparation degree programs. All students receive individualized advising that helps them reach their academic, transfer, and career goals.

Admission Process

  1. Apply to CCCC, indicating on your application either Associate in Arts–Teacher Preparation or Associate in Science–Teacher Preparation for your program of study.
  2. When you meet with your admissions counselor (education navigator), indicate you are interested in becoming an educator.
  3. You will meet with program faculty and faculty advisors to determine possible career and academic program options.

Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Students can earn an Associate in Arts Teacher Preparation degree in only two years, and then transfer to a 4-year institution and enter as a junior. This degree allows students to pursue a teaching degree in the K-12 field of education. This degree focuses on English, humanities, history, social sciences, and language and prepares students to study and teach these areas upon transfer.

This certificate program prepares individuals pursuing administering roles in diverse child-care settings to effectively work with children, families, and teachers. This certificate meets the state requirements to earn your Administration credential to become a director/owner or assistant director in a licensed child care center. Credits earned may be transferred toward an associate degree in Early Childhood. Note: Once students complete these courses, they will apply for their administration credential through the North Carolina Division of Child Development & Early Education (NC DCDEE). This credential is awarded by the state, not the college.

This certificate program prepares individuals who have obtained a bachelor’s degree and are employed as an elementary classroom teacher in a North Carolina public school.

Program Overview

The Residency Licensure Certificate program is designed for college graduates who hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field and desire to become an elementary education teacher. For admission into the program, the candidate must:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible for employment
  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree with a 2.7 GPA or higher
  • Have completed 24 hours of coursework in the requested licensure area or passed the North Carolina State Board of Education (NCSBE) required content area examination(s) for the requested licensure area
  • Have a letter of employment or promised placement from the Public School Unit (PSU)/Local Educational Agency (LEA)
  • Completed professional development training required by the PSU/LEA

Admission Process

North Carolina Community College Staff (NCCCS) staff worked collaboratively with the College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) to develop a unique single portal entry application for prospective applicants. CFNC houses the Alternative NC Teaching License: NCCCS Cultivating Carolina Classrooms Application.

Once an application is received, the NCCCS EPP Program Coordinator will evaluate the applicant’s eligibility for the program and contact the applicant. The application will then be exported to the appropriate community college for processing and admission. The applicant will be officially enrolled in the program once an official transcript(s) is received and reviewed by the local community college contact for the Residence Licensure Certificate program and a signed RL Form is submitted.

In addition to the application, students must provide:

Unofficial transcripts for admissions purposes

Official transcripts before admitted to the program, proof of employment or promised placement from the PSU/LEA, and/or

A Residency Licensure (RL) Form signed by the employing school.
