SANFORD - Representatives of Beta Sigma Phi, the Central Carolina Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, attended the PTK Carolinas Regional Convention in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the weekend of March 9-11
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized PTK as the official honor society for two-year colleges. The CCCC chapter sets a higher standard for membership eligibility than the national organization: a 3.7 grade point average rather than the 3.5 GPA that national requires.
Beta Sigma Phi took home a number of awards, including:
- Five Star Chapter Plan
- Most Distinguished Chapter, 4th Finalist (out of 84 chapters in the region)
- Distinguished Chapter
- Distinguished Honors in Action Project
- Distinguished Honors in Action Project, Theme 1: Myth & Reality
- Distinguished College Project, Honorable Mention
- Outstanding Participation in the Carolinas Region Honors in Action Program
- Carolinas Hall of Honor: Nicole Thompson, Chapter President
- Distinguished Chapter Officer, Honorable Mention: Nicole Thompson, Chapter President
- Horizon Award (2 awards): Dr. Rodney Powell, Becky Finken
- Paragon Award for New Advisors (2 awards): Dr. Rodney Powell, Becky Finken
- Carolinas Region Super Star Chapter
- Outstanding Participation in the Carolinas Region Service Program "Read to Succeed" (children's book collection)
In addition to the awards received, CCCC's first student to hold a regional office in PTK, Teresa Echeverria, completed her term as Regional Vice President from North Carolina and was recognized for her hard work and dedication.
Representatives from Beta Sigma Phi will attend PTK's annual convention in Kansas City, Mo., in late April.
