SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College recently facilitated a weekend workshop for girls who are in the Smart Girls program at East and West Lee middle schools. The event was held Saturday, May 21, at the CCCC Classroom Fitness Center Gym.
Smart Girls is a life-training program operated by the Coalition For Families in Lee County.
The workshop was designed to strengthen the girls' personal growth and development, promote healthy decision-making, teamwork and communications, and to show an inexpensive way to have glitz and glam. The workshop was able to introduce educational aspects on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in a hands-on environment that was learning-based and engaged the girls in fun activities.
The workshop demonstrated basic techniques in health, mind and body (Health & Fitness Science), tassel bead crafting and scarves made from T-shirts and shirts (Fine Arts), and a natural bath and body scrub (Esthetics).
The workshop was under the guidance of CCCC Student Outreach & Recruitment (Wrenn L. Crowe and Stephanie Whitaker), the Coalition For Families Teen Pregnancy Prevention staff (Amanda Martinsen, Smart Girls Coordinator; Brittany Garner, Teen Outreach Program Coordinator, and Brandi Johnston, Program Coordinator), and workshop assistant Cheyenne Crowe-Gordon.
