SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College's Beta Sigma Phi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society was recently recognized as a Distinguished Chapter at the PTK national convention in Washington, D.C. That puts the CCCC PTK in the Top 30 of over 1,250 chapters worldwide.
The CCCC PTK Chapter also was recognized with Distinguished Honors in Action Project and Distinguished Theme Award Honors in Action. Chapter President Sarah Shannon-Mohamed won second place in a speech competition.
The CCCC PTK Chapter also was recognized with numerous awards at the PTK Carolinas Regional Convention in Columbia, S.C. Those awards include second runner-up Most Distinguished Chapter, Distinguished Chapter, Distinguished Honors in Action Project, Distinguished College Project, Most Improved Chapter, Five-Star Chapter, Carolinas Region Super Stars, Certificate of Excellence in recognition of Distinguished Achievements in Regional Programs, Outstanding Participation in Carolinas Region Honors in Action Project, and Outstanding Participation in Carolinas Region Service Program.
Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than two million members and 1,200 chapters. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized PTK as the official honor society for two-year colleges. The CCCC chapter sets a higher standard for membership eligibility than the national organization: a 3.7 grade point average rather than the 3.5 GPA that national requires.
