SANFORD — Rebekah Boan, a Central Carolina Community College Veterinary Medical Technology student, has been awarded an American Kennel Club/ Bayer K9 Advantix Veterinary Technician Scholarship.

Only 25 of the $1,000 scholarships were awarded nationwide. All went to students at the 21 American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited schools of veterinary technology.

Candidates for the scholarship had to be current, full-time students at an AVMA-accredited school as well as a National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) student member or a member of a NAVTA student chapter. Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, activities in the small animal, exotics, and research areas, and activities in NAVTA and SCNAVTA.

Boan, 37, of Cameron, Harnett County, is planning to continue her studies at the university level and become a veterinarian. She and her husband, Philip, both enjoy having and working with animals. They currently have three dogs, four ferrets, five snakes, two rabbits, a fish, and plan to get a cat.

Additional information about the scholarships can be found on the AKC website, www.akc.org/vetoutreach, ( http://www.akc.org/vetoutreach, ) as well as the NAVTA Web site, www.navta.net.
