Some Harnett County Schools students in grades three through eight got a boost in preparing for their End-of-Grade tests at the April 14 Youth Excellence & Success (Y.E.S.) Math Club's Math Camp at the Harnett County Library, in Lillington. Volunteer student tutors from Campbell University's Operation Inasmuch worked with the children, including sophomore math major Liv Isacson (left), working with student Presley Jackson, and senior Information Technology and Security major Corey Hill (standing). Dr. Meredith Williams, chair of Campbell University's Department of Mathematics/ITS, was project leader for Operation Inasmuch. Della Newkirk (not pictured), lead instructor for Central Carolina Community College's Compensatory Education program at the Siler City Center and director of Y.E.S. in Harnett County, coordinated the camp, which was sponsored by area businesses. The goals of Y.E.S. are to enable the students to build a solid foundation of problem-solving and mathematical concepts, move beyond memorization into higher-order thinking and information processing, enhance their numerical thought and logical/critical reasoning skills, and help them develop a love for math.
