Charlie Daniels honored at Central Carolina Small Business Banquet

County and pop music legend Charlie Daniels (center) received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 23rd Annual Central Carolina Small Business Banquet, held May 8 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, in Sanford. Bob Joyce (left), president of the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce, applauds as Chet Mann (right) Chamber chairman, presents the award to Daniels. Daniels, who was born in Wilmington, said he learned to play guitar while spending his teen years in the town of Gulf near the Lee-Chatham county line, and still has ‘tar on his heels’. He thanked the crowd of 450 for still considering him one of them. The banquet, sponsored by the Chamber and Central Carolina Community College’s Small Business Center, also recognized Bob Patterson, senior vice president of First Bank, in Sanford, as Small Business Advocate of the Year, and Robert and Peggy Smith, owners of Smith’s Coffee and Premium Water Co., in Sanford, as Small Business Persons of the Year.
