How long have you worked for CCCC?
I'm finishing up my sixth year here.

What brought you to CCCC?
I was teaching anthropology for three other community colleges and searching for a full-time position within reasonable driving distance. I'd had dual enrolled students in my courses at WT and DT and had taught ACA as well. I think good advising and support are important parts of teaching, so this was a good fit. I get to teach and help students succeed, both.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I have a split position. For the first part, I'm the liaison for Chatham Early College here in Pittsboro, which means I'm responsible for teaching a great group of students how to successfully navigate all parts of the college, advising them through their associate's degree, and helping them on their way to a career or university.

Our students take two years of high school classes in Siler City and then spend their remaining 2-3 years here on Chatham Main. They're enrolled in full time college classes—I like to say we've got CEC students in almost every university transfer course we offer here. This past year, the Early College opened up to our AAS programs as well—so we're thrilled to give students more great options.

For the second part, I teach for the college: anthropology, college success classes for my CEC students, and a bit of humanities. It's a nice balance. I serve as a CCCC Ambassador, on the PC-AG committee, and I am one of the folks who lead our Safe Zone training.

What motivates you?
Student success motivates me, but not just what we see in the numbers of credentials acquired and courses passed. A good day is when one of my students takes the next step—gets brave enough to go to office hours, reaches out for the tutoring they need, or finally gets a big project in on time. Asking for help is hard! And I love when students come back or write to tell me the great things they're doing now.

What is your work motto?
"Keep going until you're proud."

Educational credentials?
I hold a B.A. from University of Louisville, joint major in Anthropology/Gender and Sexuality Studies, a M.A. from Tulane University in Cultural Anthropology, and an ABD from that institution.

Tell us about your family!
My spouse Erin and I have a farm in Silk Hope (Chatham County) where we have a small herdshare sheep dairy, sell breeding stock, and raise chickens, turkeys, and pigs. I have a grown son who lives in Kentucky, and three dogs, two of which were adopted from Cougar Pets.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
The farm takes up most of my free time, but I love to cook and bake. In my previous career, I was a chef. And I'd rather have a good book and a cup of tea than almost anything else.

What is your favorite meal?
Every year, we have a 100 or so friends out to the farm for a pig roast and make a dozen pies. My favorite foods, and tons of community- it's wonderful.

WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

All That Jazz: CCCC ACES A Key Sponsor of First Family Jazz Night in Sanford

Made possible with CCCC's Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series (ACES) sponsorship of venue, artist recruitment, and event marketing, The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society presented a family-friendly jazz concert on June 18 at Sanford's Dennis Wicker Civic & Conference Center.

The event kicked off with a kid-focused portion entitled "Jazz Tales." Author Trinity Bursey and composer Dr. Gregg Gelb collaborated on this special project. Bursey read and showed an animated slide presentation of her children’s book, The Day The Instruments Split, alongside original music Gelb composed for the staged reading.

In addition to a concert from the talented Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and the La Fiesta Latin Jazz Quintet, there was a fun dance element to the evening. Dancing to a jazzy Latin rhythm and accompanied by the La Fiesta Latin Jazz Quintet, the Magetsi 4-H Club led by Myrna Rodriguez showcased and taught the audience their dance steps.

This arts and culturally rich event was open to the public and free of charge. A big thanks to the Lee County and North Carolina Arts Councils and the Civic Center's David Foster, Kay Faucette, and the rest of the venue team for a smooth and successful fiesta!

CCCC Night at the Ballpark

It was Central Carolina Community College Night at the Ballpark for the Sanford Spinners' home baseball game with the Jacksonville Ospreys on June 19 at Tramway Park in Sanford, N.C. Free entry for CCCC employees and their kids (through elementary school age).

Our CCCC President Dr. Lisa M. Chapman delivered the first pitch.

Rats and Rabbits

The CCCC Veterinary Medical Technology program will have rats and rabbits available for adoption to go home in mid-June.

Rats are highly social creatures and often do best in pairs. They are highly intelligent and tidy pets. Rabbits are very quiet companions. They are also quite social and enjoy interaction with their humans as well as playing with toys.

Department Chair Summit 2024

On June 13, the department chairs gathered at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic and Conference Center for the annual Department Chair Summit. The day included two workshops, "Tackling Difficult Conversations" and "Revising Program Level Outcomes," which equipped attendees with strategies to enhance their leadership and program development skills. A highlight of the summit was a "recess" activity, during which chairs had the chance to unwind and explore new interests—whether through learning about edible and medicinal plants, indulging in painting, or mastering the art of origami.

Chatham Habitat for Humanity

Congratulations to Chatham Habitat for Humanity, which hosted the Thompson Family Home Dedication on Wednesday, June 5, in Moncure, N.C.

The house was built by CCCC students in the Building Construction Technologies and Sustainable Technologies programs.

CCCC's Andy McMahan (EARTh Center Executive Director), who is a Habitat Board Member, and Dr. Mark Hall (Provost, Chatham County) both participated in the dedication. Others participating were the homeowner, Barbara Thompson, and Pastors Barry Gray and Anissa Little, as well as Chatham County Assistant Manager Bryan Thompson. Anna Tuell is Chief Operating Officer of Chatham Habitat for Humanity.

NC Carolina Employment & Training Association

The CCCC Career Center was busy in May. Felicia Gilmore, in collaboration with Brittney Goldston of Randolph Community College, presented at the North Carolina Employment and Training Association Annual Conference in Charlotte. Brittney and Felicia presented two well-attended sessions on Undecided: Road Map to Success. April Raines served as the moderator for both sessions and brought a lot of energy to the conference attendees.

Ed2NC Summit 2024

In May, Felicia Gilmore assisted in the planning of the Ed2NC Summit 2024. As part of the committee, votes were cast for the panelists and facilitators for each discussed topic.

After all the ballots were completed and counted, Felicia, Career Center Coordinator at CCCC; Ian Gibbons, Senior Employer Connections Coordinator at Wake Technical Community College, and Rob Davis, Regional Recruiter at the Department of Public Safety, were chosen to lead the discussion on "Branding Opportunities for Community College Students."

This topic aimed to critically examine ways to enhance the branding of employment opportunities and maximize the recruitment of North Carolina's talent pool within the state's community colleges.

Special thanks go to the Copy Center, the Marketing Department, and Felicia Crittenden for all the support and assistance necessary to deliver an excellent presentation to the state, college, and university representatives.

Amy Gustavson Honored with Excellence in Advising Award

Amy Gustavson, Associate Director of Student Onboarding and Success, was recently awarded the Excellence in Advising - Two-Year Institution Advisor Award at the NACADA Region III Conference in Greenville, S.C., held April 15-17.

NACADA, the National Academic Advising Association, aims to enhance student development through quality advising. Gustavson's award highlights her dedication to student success, innovative advising methods, and her role in improving student retention and outcomes

Summer Reading Challenge
Date: June 1 - July 31

It’s not too late to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge! Set a goal for how many books you think you can read this summer. Keep track of all the titles and submit them via an upcoming Google Form. Those who meet their goal will receive a book of their choice (up to $15) as a prize! This event is open to registered students, faculty, and staff.

Summer Reading continues through July 31st with lots of exciting programs for kids and families! Check our calendar for program dates and details.

Virtual Film Screening – Category: Woman
Date: June 20 - June 27

After then 18-year-old South African runner Caster Semenya's victory at the 2009 World Championships, her personal medical records were leaked to the international media. The public scrutiny of her body, driven by racism and sexism, brought into question her identity as a woman and as a great champion. The International Amateur Athletics Federation (now World Athletics) ruled that the naturally high androgen levels of certain female athletes were a performance advantage, and they must medically alter their healthy bodies in order to compete. Category: Woman follows four athletes forced out of competition by regulations that target women athletes, and the subsequent devastation to their bodies and livelihoods. But these individuals are emboldened by a conviction to stand up against this violation of their human rights.

Music of the Circle with Eric Bannan
Date/Time: June 22 at 2 p.m.

Led by songwriter and storyteller Eric Bannan, this workshop is for anyone interested in being more confident and connected and opening new creative pathways in their lives. Participants will playfully integrate voices, body percussion, and simple movement in a way that builds community and teaches cooperation. Based on the work of Bobby McFerrin and Brazil’s Música do Circulo collective, this judgment-free workshop welcomes beginners as well as those with experience.

Microsoft Word: Beyond Basics
Date/Time: June 27 at 3 p.m.

This class is designed for those who are interested in advanced functions in Microsoft Word. Topics covered in this workshop include tracking changes and inserting comments, creating fillable forms, restricting editing of your document, creating macros, and using mail merge. Participants should have prior experience with Word.

The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey
Date/Time: June 29 at 2 p.m.

In this one-man show, Warren County artist and actor John DuVall portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town in the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who goes missing. Leonard Pelkey is an orphan, a cousin who Phoebe never knew she had. When he comes to live with Phoebe’s family, he upsets the delicate balance of their lives. He inspires the people around him. He sees people not as they are, but as they hope to be. When Leonard goes missing, Phoebe, her family, and her community fight to understand what happened, and to make sense of why someone might want to extinguish the beautiful absolute brightness that was Leonard Pelkey. Adapted from Celeste Lecesne's 2008 young adult novel by the same title. Please note that this play contains adult language.

NC Museum of Art Creative Impressions
Date/Time: July 1 at 10:30 a.m.

Creative Impressions is designed for those living with memory loss and for their care partners. During this free, 90-minute program, staff from the N.C. Museum of Art will guide participants through a fun and mindful observation of an artwork from the museum’s collection as well as sensory engagements and an art-making activity related to the object. This is an interactive experience where sharing and discussion are encouraged. Registration is required and limited to 20 participants.

440th Army Band Concert
Date/Time: July 20 at 2 p.m.

Music lovers of all ages are invited to a concert presented by the 440th U.S. Army Band, which has served as North Carolina's National Guard Band under several designations since the early 1900s. The band was activated in World War II as the 30th Infantry Division Band along with the rest of the North Carolina National Guard as the "Old Hickory Division." The band performs for troops and their families and for the citizens of North Carolina at ceremonies, public concerts, and parades.

Cougar Pets

Cougar Pets is a local animal rescue group housed on the Lee Main Campus. As part of the Veterinary Medical Technology program, our animals help teach veterinary technician students essential skills that will help future animals. All of the animals are rescued from shelters, and all are adoptable.
