Full-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!

January Cougar Champion: Lauren Winkens

Lauren Winkens
Music Instructor

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I have been a full-time music instructor for 5-1/2 years, but was an adjunct for a year before this.

What brought you to CCCC?
The opportunity to teach music appreciation.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I teach all things music! Besides MUS 110, I also teach Intro to Jazz and we have added History of Rock Music. I also advise A.A. students, and when I can, help organize music for campus events, like graduation.

Where were you born?
Houston, TX.

Where did you grow up?
In Houston and a suburb, Sugar Land (yes, there was a sugar factory).

Where do you live now?
I live in Sanford.

Educational credentials?
I have a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and a Master of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. My concentration for both degrees was clarinet performance. Currently, I am working on a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Ethnomusicology at UNCG.

Tell us about your family!
I have been married to my husband, Tommy, for almost 23 years. He teaches French here at CCCC (oui, we have French classes!). We have two kids: Tex, who just turned 17, and Violet is 13.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
Well, they are musical, of course! I am a founding member of Reedy or Not, a woodwind chamber group and the principal clarinetist of the Lee County Community Orchestra. When I get the chance, I play polka gigs with the NC Polka Time All-Stars, tenor sax with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, and as many pit orchestras that will allow me to bring my giant haul of woodwinds. I also play mountain dulcimer and sing in UNCG's Old Time Ensemble. When I am not practicing my clarinets, bass clarinet, saxophones, flutes, or dulcimer, I am probably eating delicious food, either at one of my favorite restaurants or made by our household chef de cuisine, Tommy.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why?
Liz Lemon from the TV show 30 Rock. Somehow I relate to her blend of kooky creativity, wit, childish humor, sarcasm, mix of cynicism with earnest wonder, and devotion to food and night cheese. Plus, I love Tina Fey (my sister and I saw Tina and Amy Poehler's live show over the summer!). Random musical connection: Tina Fey's husband, who composed the music for 30 Rock, used the clarinet for Liz Lemon's melodic themes. Yay clarinet!

What is your favorite meal?
Cheese enchiladas with tiny diced onions on top - bonus if I am eating them with my family in Texas.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
A huge thanks to everyone in Humanities that puts up with the sounds of instruments and music that blares from my classroom and office. Your support means so much to me. Also, when you hear the music, a spontaneous dance party is always welcome!

Part-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!

January Cougar Champion: Robert Howard

Robert Howard

Fire Academy Coordinator

How long have you worked for CCCC?
Eight years.

What brought you to CCCC?
I received a lot of training through CCCC with my volunteer fire department to obtain certifications. When I became a certified fire instructor, I began as an adjunct instructor with CCCC. I began assisting with the fire academy and eventually was selected to be the academy coordinator.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I am in charge of coordinating the schedule and instruction of the Fire Academy. I also assist with the coordination of training for other departments, serving as an instructor for some classes, and assist with the maintenance of equipment for the firefighter training and the emergency services training center.

Where were you born?
Sanford.

Where did you grow up?
Broadway.

Where do you live now?
Broadway.

Educational credentials?
I have an Associate in Applied Science in Electronics from CCCC as well as multiple certifications through the NC Office of Sate Fire Marshal in firefighting, driver operator, technical rescue, and fire officer.

Tell us about your family!
I have a wonderful wife of almost 31 years, Lisa. We have two daughters, Kamryn and Karey Beth, a son-in-law David, and a beautiful granddaughter, Presley.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
Lisa and I enjoy going to the beach as much as we can.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why (from a favorite book, tv show, movie, etc.)?
I enjoy pretty much all of the Marvel movies. I grew up watching the cartoons and reading the comics.

What is your favorite meal?
Pizza.

Couch to 5K Challenge

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of our recent Couch to 5K challenge for the month of January. Our top three winners of the challenge were Jordan Carter, Carla Etchison, and Elaine Wilderson. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every participant for their dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work throughout this past month.

The Couch to 5K challenge aimed to encourage a gradual and achievable approach to running or walking with a fun challenge to get out, moving, and motivated in the cold weather month of January. Over the past few weeks, we witnessed incredible determination and perseverance from our participants, as they embraced the challenge and worked toward their fitness goals.

Whether you sprinted to the finish line or took steady strides, every effort made a significant impact on your personal well-being. We are proud to have seen the positive effects of this challenge not only on physical fitness but also on mental resilience and a sense of accomplishment.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this wellness initiative- from the participants who laced up their running shoes every day to those who had accountability partners. We acknowledge that the app was not the most user friendly for some and we do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but overall we feel that it was successful in tracking our challenge for the majority. Everyone's commitment and enthusiasm made this couch to 5K challenge a true celebration of health and wellness within our campus.

As we wrap up this challenge, let's continue to support one another in our ongoing fitness journey. We look forward to more opportunities to come together and create a healthier, happier Cougar Nation. Feel free to send over your wellness challenge ideas you would like to participate in the future.

Thank you once again for your participation and dedication.

Best regards,
HR Department

Each donation has the potential to save up to three lives, meaning our efforts have the potential to positively impact countless individuals in need.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each donor who participated in the drive. Your selfless act exemplifies the spirit of kindness and solidarity that defines our community. If you were unable to participate in this blood drive, there will be future opportunities to get involved and contribute to our community’s well-being. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming events and initiatives.

NC Reads Author Event Livestream
Time/Date: Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.
Location: Holmes Family Meeting Room

Join us in the Holmes Family Meeting Room to watch a lives-treamed discussion about Beyond Innocence, featuring author Phoebe Zerwick and attorney Mark Rabil. Beyond Innocence is the story of Darryl Hunt, a young Black man who is falsely accused of murdering a Winston-Salem woman and is sentenced to life in prison. He spent 19 years behind bars before his tireless attorneys were able to prove his innocence. Part true crime drama, part chronicle of a remarkable life cut short by systematic prejudice, Zerwick’s narrative powerfully illuminates the sustained catastrophe faced by an innocent person in prison and the difficulty all formerly incarcerated people face when they try to restart their lives. This event may also be viewed from home.

Advance Healthcare Directives
Time/Date: March 2 at 10:30 a.m.

Nansi Greger-Holt RN, MPH, MSN, will discuss advance directives, legal documents that provide instructions for medical care and only go into effect if you cannot communicate your own wishes. The two most common advance directives for health care are the living will and the durable power of attorney for health care. Advance care planning is important at any age, as a medical crisis could leave you unable to communicate your own health care decisions. Planning now for your future health care can help ensure you get the medical care you want and that someone you trust will be there to communicate your end-of-life wishes.

Live Irish Music with BogTurtle Band
Time/Date: March 9 at 2 p.m.

BogTurtle is a family music group playing Irish folk-rock and traditional music, as well as modern Celtic fusion featuring vocals, violin, tin whistle, guitar, bodhrán (Irish drum) and other percussion instruments. With a setlist of over 150 songs, they perform traditional Irish/Celtic and contemporary songs by groups such as The High Kings, Gaelic Storm, Dervish, Ed Sheeran, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, The Irish Rovers, and more. All ages welcome.

Welcome2CCCC New Student Orientation

We're thrilled to share some positive outcomes from our recent Welcome2CCCC New Student Orientation sessions! In January 2024, we hosted four in-person sessions across our campuses, with a total of 56 students and 15 guests in attendance.

These sessions were a testament to our commitment to student success, featuring Resource Row and Choice Sessions that showcased key campus services and support, including the Library, Cougar Market, Veterans Affairs, Transfer Pathway Programs, Financial Aid, Business Office, and Brothers of Excellence.

A highlight of the event was a student panel discussion led by leaders from Phi Theta Kappa, the Student Government Association, and SOS Orientation Leaders, where attendees engaged in meaningful dialogue and learned about various programs and student organizations. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees expressing gratitude for the insights gained, connections made, and overall sense of belonging and community fostered during the orientation.

We're excited to continue supporting our new students as they embark on their academic journeys here at CCCC and we are especially grateful for all of the support we received from our faculty and staff!

Introducing the 2024 Career Carnival!

The 2024 PROPEL Leadership cohort is providing an enriching opportunity for our students to learn more about the various career pathways available here at Central Carolina Community College. This "Spring Fling" style event is designed to highlight the college's Career Communities while allowing students to EXPLORE pathways, CONNECT to Career Communities, and PROPEL their next adventure!

The Career Carnival will be held individually on each of the three main campuses from March 19-21. During each event, students will be given a passport. The students will take their passport to the various Career Community tables where they will participate in activities that allow them to learn more about that Career Community or Department. After participating, the "vendor" will stamp the student's passport and the student will continue on to explore other Career Communities. After visiting all of the Career Communities, students will then turn in their fully stamped passport to receive a free lunch! The passports will contain the student's information and which Career Community the student is interested in learning more about. This will be shared with each of the Career Communities after the event.

This event will not be possible without your participation! We will need vendor volunteers from all of the Career Communities on all three campuses. Our goal is to have at least two Departmental representatives from each of the seven Career Communities present during each of the events. Your role during this event will be doing what you do best: highlighting your Career Community or Department! During the event, you will be able to provide a fun activity for students to view or participate in which will give the student a better idea about the various opportunities within your Department or Career Community. What you would like to present is completely up to you! For example, the Health Sciences Career Community may have their Dental Hygiene Department demonstrate proper brushing and flossing. Or perhaps the Criminal Justice Department within the Public Safety Career Community will show how to dust for fingerprints. Let your creativity run wild while aiming to connect student's to a career that they may not have considered!

Once you have decided your activity, please fill out the Spring 2024 Career Carnival form to notify us of what activity you will be hosting for our students. You will be able to select the campus that you will be attending in addition to the Department/Career Community you will be representing. We also have spaces for various games and activities outside of representing your Career Community as well!

We look forward to seeing our students TAKEOFF on their new career journeys and we look forward to sharing this fantastic day with you! For questions, please email coe@cccc.edu.

We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
