WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
New college logo receives national Paragon Award from NCMPR!
Congratulations to our Marketing & Public Affairs Department, Marcie Dishman, Morgan Steele, Neil McGowan, and Kathy McDonald. Their entry in the Logo Design category with Central Carolina Community College's new logo received a national Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). This year nearly 80 judges from around the country reviewed close to 1,700 entries in this annual competition that recognizes excellence in communications exclusively among two-year colleges.

CCCC Students Volunteer
On January 17, in celebration of the Dr. King holiday of service, CCCC students volunteered their time chopping vegetables at the J. Fletcher Rosser Bread Basket in Sanford.
Christopher Kelly, Julian Bailey, and Bradley Baker who are also members of the student organization, MADE (Men of Academic Distinction and Excellence) were joined by Made Coach Solomon McAuley, Human Services student Esmeralda Espinoza, and Sociology Instructor Vadrin Colvin-King.
The Bread Basket serves hot meals to the less fortunate Monday-Friday, from 11:00am-12:30pm and accepts food donations from local businesses. "We always appreciate any help that we can get," said Susan Rosenthal, who oversees the daily operations of the agency, including coordinating volunteers, picking up donations, and preparing the food.
The Bread Basket is located downtown at 140 East Chisholm Street. For more information about the Bread Basket or to volunteer please call Susan Rosenthal at (919) 774-3118.
Saxophonist-Composer-Arranger Virginia Mayhew Performing
Virginia Mayhew, Jazz Saxophonist from New York will be featured with the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra on Feb. 15-16, 2013 at the Temple Theater in Sanford, NC as they celebrate "Women in Jazz" and the music of Mary Lou Williams.
Central North Carolina area music lovers are in for a real treat when renowned jazz saxophonist Virginia Mayhew joins Dr. Gregg Gelb and the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra for a special two-day series of concerts and classes. The concerts are:
- Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at 8pm at the Temple Theatre, 120 Carthage St., in downtown Sanford, NC.
- Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 7:30pm at the Halle Cultural Arts Center at 237 North Salem Street in Apex, NC.
- In addition, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, at the Halle, a free master class by Virginia Mayhew (younger players welcome) will be from 5:00-6:00pm.
Tickets are $15 adults and $10 students for the Temple Theatre show and $12 for the Halle Cultural Center show. Tickets will be available at the Temple Theatre Box Office, 919-774-4155, or Halle Cultural Center, 919-249-1120.

Red Clay Review
A reception and reading for Red Clay Review will be held at the Chatham Library on Friday, February 22. Winners of the cover art, poetry, and prose contests will be recognized and writers are encouraged to read their contributions to the magazine. Light refreshments will be served. Refreshments and mingling will begin at 6:30 pm. Recognition and readings will begin at 7pm. Copies of the magazine will be available for those of you who would like them.

Confucius Classroom Event on February 24th
The Confucius Classroom at Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) invites you to join us on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. for "Among the Lights," a musical celebration of the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival.
Blending the musical experience of a small ensemble concert with the educational insights of a special guest lecture, this event will feature visiting musicians with the NC - RTP Chinese Music Instruments Ensemble along with Ling Huang, of the CCCC Confucius Classroom, who will explain the significance of the songs and symbols common to Chinese New Year.

2013 Distinguished Alumni Award
Nominations for the CCCC Distinguished Alumni Award are open! It is time to recognize CCCC alumni who have supported and shown commitment to the College and the community. The nomination packet is attached. Nominations will be accepted through February 28, 2013.

Cosmetology And Barbering Hair Show
The CCCC Cosmetology and Barbering departments would like to extend an invitation to attend their annual Hair Show, Monday, April 22, 2013, 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. This year's theme is: "This is It!" Categories will be: Fantasy Styles, Updo Styles, Haircutting, Hair Coloring, Baby Doll Makeup, Fantasy Makeup, and Evening Makeup. Price of Admission is a canned good for the local food banks. Please join us in support of our students and the food banks!

Beginning in fall 2013, an expansion of ACA classes will take place at CCCC as part of our Title-III project.
ACA Expansion Details for 2013-2014:
- All first-time University Transfer students or UT students without ENG 111/ENG 111A credit will be required to take ACA 122.
- A pilot of ACA 111 will take place for six AAS programs (CET, CIT, Business, Accounting, Medical Office Administration, and Office Administration).
- This expansion means we need to build a strong team of ACA 122/111 instructors.
Please complete this short form if you are interested in teaching an ACA class during the 2013-2014 year.

- You are passionate about teaching and learning.
- You understand the importance of first-year students making a connection to a mentor/student advocate.
- You want to help students succeed.

Torry L. Reynolds is a developmental educator and a student affairs professional who is dedicated to the personal and academic success of college students. Ms. Reynolds is currently a doctoral student in the Higher Education program at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She holds a master's in education in Student Affairs from Kutztown University and a bachelor of arts in Afro-American Studies and Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests include academic support programs, developmental education, and student advocacy.

Lin Mendoza received her Bachelor's degree in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland and her Master's degree in Political Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her work in education includes pre-college advisor for TRIO programs, site coordinator for a supplemental education grant, and elementary school teacher in Miami, Florida. She is excited to be working in higher education, where she believes that students have a right to the tools and support they need to realize their goals and ambitions. In her spare time Lin nurtures a love for presidential history, museums, and coffee.

Lyndsie Gibbs attended Lynchburg College where she earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology and graduated with a Master of Education in Counseling in Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Prior to coming to CCCC, Lyndsie worked in Residence Life at Iowa Western Community College. While there, Lyndsie focused on training development for staff and wellness education for students. Lyndsie believes that providing holistic advisement to students will contribute to their satisfaction in and outside of the classroom. In her free time, Lyndsie enjoys spending time with her family and dogs, reading, going to the gym, and planning trips to the beach.

Dane Peterson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a B.S. in Mathematics. Prior to university, he attended Lee Christian School and Lee Senior High School in Sanford, as well as studying at Sandhills Community College. A New Hampshire native, he is thrilled to have left the snowy weather behind for the sunshine and blue skies of North Carolina. Prior to joining the College Success Center team, Dane worked as a facilitator for CCCC's Academic Assistance Center in Pittsboro and as a Developmental Mathematics Instructor on various campuses. When he's not boring others to pieces with math, Dane enjoys traveling back to the coast, pizza, and audio engineering for the Little German Band & Dancers of Raleigh.

Ramchandra Athavale goes by his nickname "Ram" (pronounced "Rom"). He has B.S. and M.S degrees in Engineering. Prior to starting his Math Success Coach position, Ram was an adjunct instructor in curriculum Mathematics at both CCCC and Wake Technical Community College. He has also worked in several other educational institutions, and in the IT industry. When not assisting students, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, and watching sports. Ram hails from the "big easy," New Orleans, and has been to more Mardi Gras parades than he can count.

A Lee County native, Daniel Wesley Berndt graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh with a B.A. in English and a concentration in journalism. Prior to his transition into the role of Math Success Coach, Daniel was working with Central Carolina Community College as an instructor in Developmental Studies teaching the new developmental math modules. Daniel is very proud to share that during his undergraduate career he was selected to present his thesis on Paradise Lost at the North Carolina State University Symposium on Milton Studies. A very passionate person, Daniel holds strong affinities for the arts, spending much of his time attending shows presented by Raleigh's Theatre in the Park and Durham's Performing Arts Center. In his spare time, Daniel remains a lifelong student of the piano and the wondrous resonance it produces, he avidly watches NCAA basketball, has strong affinities for his family, and loves peanut butter on just about anything.

Cristian L. Wood graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. Cristian is also a Central Carolina Community College graduate where she earned her Associate in Applied Science in both Business Administration and Accounting. Before becoming a Distance Education Advisor and Success Coach, Cristian was the Administrative Assistant to the Allied Health and Developmental programs at CCCC. Cristian is also an adjunct instructor at the college where she teaches Accounting, Study Skills, and Developmental Math. Cristian is excited to be working in the Distance Education department and is passionate about distance learning; she earned her B.S. degree online which allows her to have experience that can enhance her support of distance learning at CCCC. In her free time, Cristian enjoys spending time with her family and dogs, watching the Carolina Hurricanes hockey games, and reading.

Bereavement Announcements
Dixie Lane Hockaday, beloved wife, of J. F. Hockaday, died Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Select Specialty Hospital of Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. A family visitation was held in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church, Sanford, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 13, at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, Sanford, and interment will follow in the church Columbarium at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 202 Summitt Avenue, Sanford, NC, 27330, or to a charity of one's choice. The family may be contacted at 1909 Windmill Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
Former CCCC employee Gloria Peele's, husband, Richard Donald Peele (Don) passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013. Visitation was held Thursday, January 31 at First Baptist Church, Summit Drive from 6 - 8 p.m. His funeral was held on Friday, February 1, at 11:00 a.m. Cards may be sent to Gloria at 1508 Lord Ashley Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
