Full-Time Cougar Champion of the Month(s)!
February Cougar Champion: Travis Perry
Travis is so incredibly helpful! I had an issue connecting my computer to a projector in a classroom, and he came over to meet me as soon as I had time. He listened to what I needed and figured out a way to make it happen. I had expected to be told it was impossible, but he climbed up into a chair and got it working. Without his help, I wouldn't be able to teach my class effectively in the coming weeks. I'm so grateful for his flexibility and creativity.
Travis Perry

Vet Med and the Community
CCCC's Cougar Pets Colony Animals
During the month of March, Mrs. Thomson's seventh grade Humanities class at Ascend Leadership Academy in Sanford collected donations for CCCC's Cougar Pets colony animals. On March 30, the students delivered their donations which filled up an entire conference room table! The students also spent some time reading to our colony cats while they were here. It was a very successful day and we hope to have them back in the future!
Students Provide Community Service
Lee Early College Mathematics Instructor and AVID Site Coordinator, Christopher Fairley, has two students who chose to help out CCCC's Vet Med Department throughout the past few months for a community service project.
LEC students Catarina Rye and Michelle Cruz have been helping with various projects like making dog and cat toys for our colony animals, and planting a flower garden outside of our Cat Ward windows to attract bees and butterflies for our cats to watch. We have really enjoyed getting to know these wonderful ladies and appreciate all of their hard work!

Thanks, faculty and staff, for taking the college's Veterinary Medical Technology dogs for a campus walk on April 5.

Dr. Liao’s contributions helped NIF successfully demonstrate fusion ignition – the point when more energy is generated from a reaction than is used to create the reaction — in a laboratory for the first time on Dec. 5, 2022.
Scientists have been researching fusion ignition for more than a century and working to achieve it for more than sixty years!

Applied Technologies Day
Wednesday, March 22, was Applied Technologies Day on the CCCC Lee Main Campus, with students from area schools visiting these various programs of study. We had 77 students participate in our Applied Technologies Scavenger Hunt, accomplishing:
✓ Exposing students to many of the programs that make up our Applied Technologies Career Community.
✓ Exposing students to their peers in other programs, whom they don't often get a chance to interact with.
✓ Helping students learn about what we do as a college.
✓ Making connections between students and programs, which may pay off down the road in unexpected ways.
✓ Feeding students pizza. Man, did they eat!
Applied Technologies Scavenger Hunt
This Scavenger Hunt event was to let currently enrolled college students visit the various departments within the Applied Technologies community and gain knowledge about each department. It was also to build relationships among students in different majors at the college.
Cruisin' Cougar Kitchen
Here are scenes from the CCCC Culinary program's Crusin' Cougar Kitchen food truck visiting at the college's Emergency Services Training Center on Thursday, March 23.
Medical Assisting Education Review Board Impressed!
Peer reviewers from Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) conducted a site visit to assess our Medical Assisting program. The on-site review committee found no deficiencies in CCCC's Medical Assisting program, which is a testament to our dedicated faculty, program director, and the support system they have at the college.
One reviewer noted this was the first site she had visited with no citations. In addition to the Medical Assisting program itself, the review team was impressed with the college's cohesiveness and student focus, the services we provide for students, and CCCC's support of the program.
Please join in congratulating Melissa Fogarty, Program Director; Dianne Johnson, Practicum Coordinator; Anne O'Shaugnessy, Practicum Coordinator/Instructor, and their adjunct faculty for this remarkable accomplishment!
Dr. Denise Martin, Dean of Health Sciences and Professional Services, and Danielle Bruner, Coordinator of Assessment, Enrollment, and Retention, provided strong support for the Medical Assisting department throughout the accreditation process.
The college would also like to thank everyone who assisted in preparations for the site visit and who participated in interviews with the review team. Those folks include:
- Scott Byington, Associate Vice President, Onboarding and Advising
- Jamie Childress, Dean, Enrollment/Registrar
- Ken Hoyle, Vice President, Student Services
- Brian Simpson, Director, Accreditation
- BJ Thompson, Associate Director, Learning Resources
- Adam Wade, Dean, Student Onboarding and Success
- Amber Werkheiser, Director, Financial Aid
A big thank you to the entire CCCC family for supporting Medical Assisting and all of our programs and faculty. This kind of success would not be possible without you!
Women in Business Panel Discussion
SANFORD, N.C. - The Women in Business Panel hosted by the Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) Student Activities and the Business Technologies Department took place on March 30. The event was sponsored by Sanford Business and Professional Women and the Pfizer Women's Resource Group. The sponsors paid for T-shirts for the in-person attendees.
The panel featured Patti Clapper, Brenda Clegg, Sandra Heath, Robin Heesacker, Tamara Joyner, Maryam Mohaghegh, Jamie Pedley, and Lisa Robinson. The women on the panel represented a wide range of different career paths, industries, and perspectives.
Patti Clapper is a CCCC graduate and has been a paralegal instructor at the college since 2008. Brenda Clegg was recently named Chatham County Public Health Department's first diversity, equity and inclusion officer. Sandra Heath works as a project manager for Family Medical Supply. Robin Heesacker, an entrepreneur, started her business R H Design and Staging because of her love and passion for home design. Tamara Joyner was the Director of Financial Services/Controller at CCCC. Maryam Mohaghegh moved to the U.S. from Iran and is now a foreign language professor at N.C. State University. Jamie Pedley is a site operations manager at Pfizer. Lisa Robinson is an attorney at Rosen Law Firm and CCCC instructor.
Panel moderator was Shirley Rijkse, CCCC Business & Human Resource Management Lead Instructor.
All of the women on the panel had many inspirational people in their lives who helped to get them to where they are today. The women discussed how much their own mothers, grandmothers, and aunts really inspired them.
"I've always been surrounded by wonderful women who just lift you up and they are my heroes," said Joyner.
An overarching sense of women supporting and lifting each other up was felt throughout the panel. One example of that uplifting spirit was when Clapper discussed how much her fellow panelist Lisa Robinson had inspired and helped her throughout her journey. "She is one of the reasons I'm here today," said Clapper. It was noted that Robinson was Clapper's instructor when she was a CCCC student.
The discussion also touched on the importance of receiving help from others and allowing oneself to be uplifted by others. "Seek out help and don't be afraid to ask questions," Clegg said.
The panelists agreed that with help from the people around you, it becomes easier to accomplish goals in both career and personal life. "We have to be encouraged by others and let go of our own fears," said Joyner.
Career and personal life was another big aspect of the panel, discussing how to balance those, as well as the difference in this experience between most women and men.
"It's the mindset that if you hire a man he will be dedicated to his job but a woman will have to care for the kids," Heath said.
Women can be seen as the ones who have to balance everything and really multitask amongst work and family life.
Clegg says that she thinks about it as if she is juggling the different aspects of her life. If one of the balls she was juggling was glass, what would be in it that she would want to make sure it didn't break -- and that is how she knows what is the most important thing in her life at that time.
This inspirational and supportive panel highlighted how important it is for women to support the other women around them, and help open doors for other women, but to never forget that the most important person to support is oneself, because one cannot help those around them if they are not okay. Mohaghegh stated, "You should be your biggest fan."

Give Kids A Smile
Our wonderful CCCC Dental Program was pleased to participate in the Give Kids A Smile program on Friday, March 31.
Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series (ACES)
CCCC's Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series (ACES) and Student Activities collaborated to host a Black History, Culture, and Arts event on the Harnett Main Campus on March 7. Thanks to generous funding from a Harnett County Arts Council's Grassroots Grant, attendees had many enriching opportunities.
Acclaimed actor and playwright Mike Wiley performed his one-man show A Game Apart about the life of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. His shows feature engaging audience participation.
Chris Thompson, a fantastic musician and teacher, led two workshops in West African drumming and song. There was a Homage exhibit with scores of historic Black history artifacts from the private collection of the McAdoo family of Charlotte.
CCCC students, faculty, and staff, as well as groups from the general public, attended. Survey results highlight the day's impact:
- "This is everything. Please keep spreading the history and culture of our people. Mike Wiley's performance was amazing!"
- "I attended the Chris Thompson dance and drumming event. The event was excellent. Thompson had a balance between the historical context and culture surrounding the drums. Thompson also made the event very entertaining."
- "This was a great set-up. I loved seeing the original art pieces and articles in the exhibit. Great experience!"

Eugene Moore Manufacturing and Biotech Solutions Center located at Lee Main Campus. Tuition and allowance were provided by the Foundation through the Building Bridges: A Food Bank Workforce Development Scholarship, which was created through a grant/donation from the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Charlee Cougar Chatbot
Beginning this summer, Charlee Cougar chatbot will be available on CCCC.edu to assist students and other website visitors. Our bot has scanned hundreds of CCCC web pages and documents to gather information, and in doing so has accumulated a unique CCCC vocabulary of over 50,000 words. It will use this information to answer questions spontaneously and direct website visitors to relevant information.
While the bot has already collected an impressive volume of information and shown a credible ability to respond accurately to questions, it will only get better over time as it learns and encompasses a wider swath of data. We’ll be working behind the scenes in the bot’s internal system or “brain” to verify information accuracy and to provide custom-written solutions where we encounter gaps in the bot’s knowledge.
Our Charlee Cougar chatbot will improve the experience of website visitors and increase our ability to serve our students, employees, and community members with timely and accurate information on-demand.
Purr-fect Flow: Yoga with Cats
Participants will be able to sign up for a low-intensity, stress-relief yoga flow in the cat room. Cats may/will be out to socialize during the session. Sign up for Wednesday April 26 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.
Making Psychology A Major
After taking a psychology class, some students are really interested in the subject. They wonder if psychology could be their major when they transfer to a four-year college or university. The first question students ask is, what can I do with a psychology degree?
There is now an organization on campus for getting inside information about a psychology major. We created an organizational blackboard for students that want to know more about the degree. Students will learn about what a psychology degree can do to help them find a career, the N.C. colleges that are highly rated for specific fields of psychology, and information about how to enter a psychology program at colleges. We add new information every month.
Every month we have a virtual meeting with students that want to know more about psychology majors. If you want to know more about the organization and how to become part of it, contact Timothy Barnes or David Melnick.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES and EVENTS
CCCC Students Participate in SkillsUSA
Our students participated in SkillsUSA on March 31. We had two students place in the culinary competition. We had a 1st place winner, Claudia Castro Reyes, and a 5th place winner, Christopher Syros.
CCCC Career Expo
In collaboration with Lee County Schools, the CCCC Career Expo was held on March 29. I am truly overjoyed with the turnout for this year's Career Expo. The employers were just as excited as I was to come in and assist our students and community residents by providing wonderful and current job openings.
This event was very beneficial to job seekers who were looking for a variety of different industry-based employers with openings right now. Jobseekers had the opportunity to speak with HR Representatives and Recruiters of some top employers like Tesla, Wolfspeed, Sanford Contractors, Central Carolina Community College, Pinehurst Country Club, Mountaire Farms, Arauco, Smithfield Foods, Caterpillar, the Department of Public Safety, and Carolina Connections Solar, to name a few.
This year's Expo was a huge success and that is because of the joint efforts of my team. The team consisted of representatives of different departments from CCCC and Lee County School:
- Dennis Wicker Civic & Conference Center staff
- Student Services
- Job Corps
- Educational Navigators
- Human Resources
- Marketing
- Copy Center staff
- WWGP 1050 Radio with Margaret Murchison
- The Lee County Schools Team
- Dean Felicia Crittenden
- Vice President Margaret Roberson
Without what I like to call my All-Star team, this event would not have been as successful as it was. I would like to send a special thank you to Catherine Ann's Cookie House, a local employer here in Lee County, for providing delicious treats for our attendees and employers. Nothing but rave reviews from everyone that had one of their delicious cookies. Be on the lookout for career events in the future sponsored by the CCCC Career Center.

Slate CRM Has Arrived!
A new CRM has arrived! Great news for student onboarding and great news to make your advisor experience easier (and better for students too!)
CCCC began phasing in Slate this spring focusing on admissions and recruitment. Slate is a comprehensive platform for admissions, enrollment management and student success. This customer relationship management tool was specifically designed for higher education and allows for increased engagement and efficiency in some of our day-to-day operations. Some features we have already begun using?
Slate will also replace many of your favorite features in Aviso, while allowing more automated communications and better tracking of student interactions. Grade alerts, viewing current grades, advising communications, and appointment scheduling will all be available through Slate. Look for training when you return in August! Great news to make your advisor experience easier (and better for students too!)

Virtual Film Screening: Brave Miss World
April 20 to April 27
Join us in watching Brave Miss World in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In October 1998, 18-year-old Linor Abargil was stabbed and raped while working as a model in Milan. Weeks later she was crowned Israel’s first Miss World.
Over the course of five years, director Cecilia Peck (Shut Up & Sing) follows Abargil on a mission to confront the trauma of her past, including a hunt for other victims of the man who raped her, preventing his parole.
Abargil, a poised, magnetic and supremely empathic advocate travels from Hollywood to rape crisis centers, American college campuses, and the townships of South Africa to share her story and inspire others to confront shame and to heal.
Emmy nominated Brave Miss World is a call for justice and a startlingly honest portrayal of how personal tragedy can be transformed into a global awareness campaign against sexual violence. The film may be viewed at this site. The password may be requested by contacting social.library@chathamlibraries.org.

This month, the Student Onboarding and Success department has chosen April Raines as our Fantastic Facilitator!
Why I volunteer and/or why I believe new student orientation is important to participate in as a member of the college.
"New Student Orientation is an important part of the student experience. This process helps students become acquainted with Central Carolina Community College, its faculty, and its staff. At New Student Orientation, students have the opportunity to ask questions, build new relationships, and receive the support they need to thrive in their academic journey. My belief is students that attend New Student Orientation will gain the confidence needed to move forward in completing their educational pathway."

COUGAR PETS
Cougar Pets
Cougar Pets is a local animal rescue group housed on the Lee Main Campus. As part of the Veterinary Medical Technology program, our animals help teach veterinary technician students essential skills that will help future animals. All of the animals are rescued from shelters, and all are adoptable.
Meet Figaro
My name is Figaro!
I am a super sweet, fun-loving guy! I love people and playing with other cats. I am going to thrive wherever you are! I can't wait to meet my new family.
Meet Elliot
My name is Elliot!
I have a BIG personality packaged into a small frame. Sometimes I can be a little hesitant with new people, but I can easily be persuaded with treats. Once I accept you, I will be loyal till the end!

All adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
