Kay Faucette Wins Statewide Honor

Kay Faucette, Facility Coordinator for the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, has been awarded the Lula M. Burrell Educational Office Professional of the Year 2016-2017 by the N.C. Association of Educational Office Professionals, Inc. The award was presented on March 23 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem.

Faucette is the fifth person from Central Carolina Community College to win the award. Previous winners were Gloria Cheatham (2007), Polly Bouldin (2010), Linda Spivey (2012), and Martha Wilkie (2016).

North Central Prosperity Zone Community College Press Conference

Central Carolina Community College was one of nine community colleges to participate in the North Central Prosperity Zone Community College Press Conference on Wednesday, March 22, at Wilson Community College.

Representing CCCC at the event were Cathy Swindell, Director of Industry Services, and R.V. Hight, Director of Communications.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Stephen Scott, President of Wake Tech Community College; Christopher Blue, student at Vance-Granville Community College; Nikki Ward, Human Resource Director with U.S. Flue-Cured Tobacco Company; Bruce Pannenton, Dean of Health Sciences & Public Safety Dept. Chair of Science, Health & PE at Edgecombe Community College; and Lyn Austin, Trustee Board Chair at Johnston Community College. Dr. Tim Wright, President of Wilson Community College, was moderator for the event.

Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Harnett Spring Games

Harnett County Special Olympics Spring Games will be held on April 28 at Campbell University, Buies Creek. Opening ceremonies will kick off at 9:45 a.m. at the Irwin Belk Track. The games and lunch will follow. Central Carolina Community College, along with Campbell University, East Carolina University, Harnett County Schools, and several other community partners, work together to make Harnett County Spring Games a success.

Athletes from 28 schools and agencies will compete in events such as standing long jump, running long jump, track and field events, softball throw, and relay events.

Volunteers are needed to assist with running the games and, most importantly, accompany and assist the participating athletes for the entire day (8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.). The games are scheduled to last from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be an opening and closing ceremony.

All staff and volunteers will need to arrive at the event site by 8 a.m.

Poetry Collection, Suburban Burn

Ty Stumpf, Humanities Department Chair, is proud to announce that his first collection of poetry has just been published. The collection, entitled Suburban Burn, was a finalist for the Cathy Smith Bowers Chapbook Competition and has been published by Main Street Rag Publishing Company. Ty has copies for purchase for $11, and he would be honored to sign a copy for any of his CCCC colleagues. Ty will have a reading in Sanford in early May. You can find more info at tystumpf.com.

Coming Soon! New Login for Library Databases
Beginning May 16, the library will have a new way to access our online resources from off campus. Instead of everyone using the same username and password, you will be able to use your Blackboard login credentials for remote access. Upon clicking on the desired library resource when off campus, you will be directed to Blackboard to enter your personal login credentials. After logging in, you will be redirected back to your selected library resource to resume your search. Please communicate this information to your students for the summer and fall semesters.

Librarians Attend NCCCLA Conference
Samantha O'Connor, Public Services Librarian, and Tara Lucas, Director of Library Services, attended the statewide North Carolina Community College Librarians Association (NCCCLA) Conference in March at Carteret Community College in Morehead City. This year was the 50th anniversary of the organization. Samantha presented two conference sessions and conducted a poster session. Her sessions included:

National Library Week
The Library celebrated National Library Week from April 10 - 14 with our Maker Fair, Paws to Read, Library Bingo, and the jelly bean jar count activities at the Lee Library. The Harnett Library kicked off their Community Garden Project and had cupcakes. Below are a few photos from the events.

Dr. Pamela Senegal (pictured), with Kelly Hall (left) won the jelly bean jar count contest this year. There were 753 jelly beans! Dr. Senegal had the nearest guess at 737.

Paws to Read provided play time with Vet Med pups and promoted library resources.

Students enjoyed crafts at our Maker Fair, and the button machine was a huge hit!

Student Activity Day
The Library and the Student Gaming Club partnered to have gaming in the library during Student Activity Day at the Lee Main Campus. Games included board, card, and video games. Photos from the event are below.

Faculty in Community with Math Camp

On April 8, dozens of students participated in the 2017 Harnett County EOG Math Camp (End of Grade) at the Harnett County Library in Lillington. The founder and coordinator of the camp is Della Newkirk, Lead Instructor for BELL Academy at CCCC's Siler City Center (College and Career Readiness).

Academic integrity and a commitment to student success are displayed in community leadership, as the camp has reached hundreds of children since 2010. The camp is a preparatory initiative in partnership with area businesses and Campbell University's Operation Inasmuch. Newkirk desires to enrich the educational possibilities for students, tutors, and school-aged students on a weekly basis, and is committed to helping young people succeed in school and inspiring them to build a lifelong habit of learning.

Newkirk has utilized academic and instructional scholarship in adult education for many years. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from Campbell University and a Master of Science in Higher Education from Capella University. She is a currently a doctoral student in Postsecondary and Adult Education at Capella University.

Mentoring Program Mock Interview

Valorie Benn, Associate Director of Human Resources, recently participated in the BelFlex Junior Mentoring Program mock interviews at Lee County High School. The program, which was established to teach young adults professionalism in the workplace, looks to connect local high school students with area businesses to help prepare students to be confident, poised, and ready for employment.

CCCC's Fourth Annual Holocaust Remembrance Event

Courtesy of The Center for Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education of N.C., our guest is Dr. Debbie Long, the daughter of two Holocaust survivors who later spent years as refugees. She is a highly regarded speaker on the Holocaust who has spent decades unraveling her family's experience. Given her reputation and the number of speaking engagements she does each year, it's finally our turn at CCCC to welcome her. Additionally, the Center's founder and director, Sharon Halperin, will be part of the program.

We're working to have a loaned exhibit on display in the Lee Main Campus lobby again this year. (Thanks, Marcie and team!) This year's exhibit would be courtesy of the N.C. Holocaust Council and the American Friends of the Ghetto Fighters' Museum. We hope to display the "Triumph of Life" that commemorates the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising with 4 panels depicting Jewish resistance and survivor stories.

Shanxi University Performance

Musicians and dancers from Shanxi University in the People's Republic of China drew an enthusiastic chorus of oohs and ahhs from a packed house during an hour-long performance on March 26 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.

The free performance was presented by the Confucius Classroom at Central Carolina Community College, an educational hub offering Chinese language and culture classes taught by Visiting Professor Yuehan Ma from China.

It featured Chinese music and dance native to the Shanxi province and other regions of Northern China. Shanxi University is located in Taiyuan, the provincial capital, about 300 miles southwest of Beijing.

Diabetes Week

For five days, CCCC focused on steps to prevent, delay, or better manage diabetes. Events from March 27 - 31 included the graffiti wall, exploring family health history, recipes, and screenings.

UBMS ACT and SAT Prep Course

On April 1, thirteen Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) 11th grade students completed a year-long ACT amd SAT prep course in which they participated in 30 hours of test preparation over the course of ten Saturdays. Throughout April, May, and June students will take official ACT and SAT tests at no cost due to test fee waivers provided by the UBMS program. The graphs below show the impact and success of the ACT/SAT prep program on last year's juniors, with students attaining significant gains on both tests as a result of the course. We hope to see the same successful outcomes with this year's cohort!

As you may know, UBMS is a TRiO program at CCCC focused on college access for over 60 low-income and first-generation Harnett County high school students. The program's goal is to prepare students for the college admissions process while finishing high school strong and to assist them with successfully enrolling into a college of their choice. UBMS starts providing services to students in their ninth grade year and stays with them until they graduate high school. During each academic school year and summer, UBMS provides services that are geared toward preparing these students for college, with a particular focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

We would like to give a big thank you to our students and to their instructors, Mr. Jerome Burgess and Ms. Genny Black, both Harnett County high school teachers, for their dedication and hard work this past year.

Spring Break College Tour

by Courtney Lowery, Program Coordinator Upward Bound Math and Science

TRiO Upward Bound Math and Science staff accompanied UBMS participants on a two-day trip to explore Lenoir-Rhyne, the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and Western Carolina University. During this two-day trip, participants were given campus tours, along with admissions informational sessions. Students were also given first-hand insight on leadership opportunities, along with financial aid and scholarship information. We were given the chance to explore state-of-the-art classrooms, athletic facilities, and research labs. Students were given the opportunity to enhance team building strategies during their time at the A-Escape room. Participants were broken up into two teams and tried to escape either the "Selachi Biotech Research Bunker" or "Abandoned Submarine." Overall, the trip was a success.

Diversity Committee Selects Poster Winner

Talia Friday presented student Ashley Foutz, winner of the Women's History Month Poster Contest (Lee Campus), with a $25 Amazon gift card. Sponsored by the Diversity Committee, the theme, aligning with the National Women's History Month Project, was "Trailblazing Women in Labor and Business."

Ashley's poster was dedicated to her sister-in-law, Angela Sasser, who she says she thought of instantly after hearing the theme. Ashley stated, "She [Angela] has two jobs as an LPN, has two children, and was just accepted to an RN program. She was a perfect fit for the contest." Ashley also cited Angela's dedication to her family, quoting Angela as saying "My children are an important part of why I work so hard."

Thanks to the Diversity Committee for generating awareness of Women's History and the importance of women in the workforce.

Dr. Harrington Interviewed by Campbell Magazine

Dr. Anthony Harrington, former History and Broadcasting instructor at CCCC was recently interviewed by Gordon Anderson for an article in the Spring 2017 Campbell Magazine. The article was on the songwriter John D. Loudermilk, who attended Campbell College in the 1950s and wrote many songs. Harrington played most of these tunes in his 23 years in radio broadcasting. Just a few of these songs you may have heard:

• Indian Reservation by Paul Revere and the Raiders in 1971;
• Abilene by George Hamilton IV in 1956;
• Tobacco Road by the Nashville Teens in 1964;
• Sad Movies Make Me Cry by Sue Thompson in 1960;
• Break My Mind by Vern Gosdin in 1977; and
• Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye by the Casinos in 1967.

Perks at Work

Perks at Work offers employee discounts of up to 25% on name brand, practical and luxury items, as well as travel, amusement park, and entertainment tickets. Register for free at www.perksatwork.com/login.

First-time users will need to register using their work email address and the company name of EAP in order to access the Savings Center. When entering the company name, as you begin to type a drop-down menu will appear. Please choose EAP from the options in the drop down.

• Don't forget to use the company name of EAP.
• Please register with your work email address.
• Be sure that you can access your email right away. A system-created message will be sent to that address immediately.
• You will need to retrieve the email to complete your registration and then log in to begin exploring the site for the great discounts.

Legal and Financial Center

To access the Financial and Legal Resource Center, go to the EAP website at www.mygroup.com. You will choose the "My Portal Login" and the "Work-Life" option. Enter our unique employer username and password combination-username: cccc2014 and password: guest.

Once you have accessed the work-life site, you will have access to a wealth of resources and online seminars. In the "Centers," you can find the "Legal and Financial Center." This is where you find a link for more information on how to create simple will at no cost to you plus more financial links.

Skill Builder Center

In the "Skill Builder Center," you can access e-learning courses that you can complete in 15-20 minutes. Human Resources recommends several of the topics including:

• Cultural Diversity in the Workplace
• Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
• Drug-Free Workplace
• Business Etiquette and Professionalism

However, there are several courses for your personal enrichment such as:

• Appreciating Personality Differences
• Emotional Intelligence
• Effective Communication
• Eating Your Way to Wellness and more.

The presentations are narrated and you will receive a certificate of completion.

He is survived by a son, Victor Lloyd and wife Susan of Apex; daughter, Denise Johnson and husband Timothy of Lillington; granddaughter, Jessica Woody and husband Johnny; and four great-grandsons, Gavin, Maddox, Banks and Jett.
