CCCC New Student Orientation
The CCCC New Student Orientation and Welcome Reception was held Friday, Jan. 6.
The Office of Student Onboarding and Success hosted a special extended new student orientation on Jan. 6 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center. We brought together 45 new students and their parents for a welcome event to remember. Students completed their new student orientation requirement, engaged in student-led career community campus tours, took photographs with Charlee the Cougar, experienced a faculty-led "Ted Talk," and connected with a variety of CCCC departments/programs that are all aimed at supporting their overall success. Students also had the opportunity to learn about campus life at the Student Government Association Welcome Reception, hosted by Student Activities. The event was truly a special kickoff to the spring semester.
A special thank you goes to our student volunteers, student ambassadors, and student government association participants. They played a big part in the event's overall success and really welcomed their new classmates with the true Cougar spirit.
Another big thank you goes to our amazing faculty and staff that volunteered their time in support of this initiative. They brought resources, their energy, talents, and supported students throughout the entire event. Thank you!

Academic Assistance Centers Celebrate an Outstanding Semester!
Please celebrate with the AAC Coordinators, Lead STEM tutors, Lab Assistants, Writing Coaches and Tutors the outstanding service provided in fall 2022.
- Tutors and Coordinators visited 55 classes to introduce and promote the services of the AACs, STEM Labs, and WRCs.
- Chatham, Harnett, and Lee Tutors provided academic support for 176 unique student visitors.
- Our Tutors provided a total of 1,453 hours of academic support, consisting of one-to-one tutoring, group tutoring sessions, supplemental instruction sessions, and STEM Lab drop-ins. This number represents both virtual and in person sessions.
- Our Writing Coaches and English Faculty reviewed 901 Online Writing Lab Submissions. Writing Coaches provided 127 hours of in person writing support.
- The Chatham, Harnett and Lee AACs proctored 470 tests. Of those tests, 160 were for students requiring testing accommodations.
The AACs rely on the hard work of our part-time employees (community and students) and the support of our faculty partners. Thank you for an excellent fall semester; we look forward to a successful and productive spring semester.

Chatbot is Coming to CCCC
CCCC is excited to be working with Ivy.ai to develop a cutting-edge, customizable AI chatbot that will soon be deployed on our public-facing website. This chatbot will enhance our ability to communicate with both students and the general public by providing quick and automated information on demand, as part of our ongoing Title III (NAVIGATE) efforts to simplify and streamline the onboarding and advising experience.
The chatbot’s functionality will grow and improve over time so that it is able to answer more complicated questions, serving as a front-line resource while also deferring more complicated inquiries to the appropriate offices as needed via a ticket system.
With the chatbot able to answer many of the most common questions that students ask, we expect our staff to benefit from freed-up time and resources as the result of having a reduced number of incoming phone calls and general inquiry emails.
We will be sharing more information with you soon about the chatbot as development continues.

Angel Tree Thank You
The Angel Tree program had another record year providing gifts for 108 children across all three counties. This year, families could also request food assistance and more than 150 bags of non-perishable food items were prepped and distributed as part of the program. This was the first year of the Angel Tree fund through the CCCC Foundation and more than $500 was raised to benefit the program! Thank you to everyone who helped with the program from those who donated, those who sponsored our angels, and those who volunteered their time! It was our most successful season yet and I cannot thank the CCCC family enough for coming together for our students!
First Day of School
Students were welcomed back to campus on the first day of school with donuts and “first day” pictures!

TRiO SSS Events
CCCC Hosts First-Generation Celebration Days
The First-Generation College Committee, Student Activities, and TRIO Student Support Services hosted the annual First-Generation College Celebration from Nov. 15-17, in combination with Fall Fest on all three curriculum campuses. These events were held to celebrate the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 on Nov. 8. Being a first-generation student means that you are the first in your immediate family to attend college.
With the help of Student Activities and SGAs Fall Fest, we celebrated over 200 CCCC first-generation faculty, staff, and students through recognizing their hard work, perseverance, and determination of being the first in their family to achieve/seek a higher education degree!
TRIO Students Support Services would like to thank all of the CCCC faculty and staff that helped accomplish these events.
First, we would like to thank the First-Generation Committee that helped plan and bring this event together through their continuous passion and support: Adana Arnold, Ashlee Dockery, B.J. Thompson, Candice Solis, Dane Peterson, Falecia Simmons, Fred Staton, Heather Ocegueda, Jennifer Dillon, Jennifer Servi-Roberts, Jessica Rogers (Committee Lead), Katy Jones, Kimberly Dresser, Lauren Black, Maryann Aucompaugh, Princess Lane-McEachern, AVP Scott Byington, Suzannah Palumbo, and Valerie Nunn.
We would especially like to acknowledge the volunteers who made the day of activities come to life and ensure this event felt special: Fred Staton, Suzannah Palumbo, Kim Dresser, Falecia Simmons, Bianka Stumpf, Jennifer Dillon, AVP Scott Byington, Jennifer Servi-Roberts, Lincoln Frye, Elaine Wilderson, Lara Abels, Mari Wimberly, Audra Kallimanis, Tim Barnes, Leigh Beam, Allison Sillis, Peggy Cotten, Morgan Pruitt, Barbara Bera, BJ Thompson, Fae Goodman, Candice Solis, and Brianna Clark.
Thank you to Lauren Black, Tiffany Needham, and Kelly Brucker who helped facilitate conversations and awareness of recognizing the Health Science Building students, faculty, and staff through requesting items to be passed out in order to help the people in those buildings feel special and celebrated.
TRIO SSS Celebrates the End of the Semester: Winter Wonderland Style!
On Dec. 13, TRiO Student Support Services students were celebrated for their several accomplishments throughout the Fall 2022 semester! We had several make the Presidents List and many achieved As and Bs! To properly celebrate our students, we had cookie decorating stations, holiday crafts, a prize wheel with TRiO swag prizes, and a photo booth. We ended the sweet night with a catered meal to gather together and allow our students to continue to build their sense of community with their fellow TRiO SSS students. We are so proud of the resilience, dedication, and perseverance our students continue to do each semester!

McMasters' Will: The Scheme That Almost Freed Us
Presented by Siler City native Calvin Dark in recognition of Black History Month on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m., Dark tells the story of his enslaved great-great-grandfather Aaron McMasters, who lived on the Chatham/Randolph County line. His enslaver, Simeon McMasters, promised to free him and his mother upon his death. Unable to meet the legal requirements for emancipation, Simeon sought the help of a controversial anti-slavery group called the North Carolina Manumission Society. Their solution was a scheme – using Simeon’s last will and testament – to get around the state’s emancipation laws. When the enslaver died, the scheme sparked a legal battle across Chatham, Randolph, Alamance, and Moore counties between the McMasters family, Quakers, Confederate officials, and a future governor of North Carolina. “McMasters’ Will” went all the way to the North Carolina Supreme Court. Registration is required: tinyurl.com/McMastersWill.
Virtual Film Screening: Fannie Lou Hamer’s America
Join us Feb. 16-23 in recognition of Black History Month. Fannie Lou Hamer was a leader in the civil rights movement, founder of the Freedom Democratic Party in Mississippi, and the organizer of Freedom Summer, a volunteer-based campaign launched in the summer of 1964 to register as many Black voters in Mississippi as possible. Fannie Lou Hamer's America, a documentary produced by her grand-niece Monica Land, is a portrait of a civil rights activist and the injustices in America that made her work essential. Through public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist, Fannie Lou Hamer’s America explores and celebrates the lesser-known life of one of the civil rights movement’s greatest leaders. The film may be viewed at this site. Link will become active during watch times. A password is required and may be requested by contacting social.library@chathamlibraries.org.
PlayMakers Mobile: The Tempest
Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Utilizing music, puppets, clowning, fabric, and only six actors, the PlayMakers Mobile Unit will bring Shakespeare’s The Tempest to life in an intimate and imaginative way on a tiny square of space, reminding us that "we are such stuff as dreams are made on."
On a desolate island, the former Duke Prospero and his daughter Miranda have learned to live with the strange and wonderful inhabitants of the land. Exiled by his own brother for being more interested in studying magic than ruling his people, Prospero connects to the enchantments of the island and uses them to summon his enemies and seek his revenge. What ensues is a surprising tale of transformation, and all must decide who and how to forgive. The Tempest is a story of love, will, reunion, and mercy that questions what it means to be human.

PERSONNEL NOTES
Fantastic Facilitator
Jalen Cheek
The Student Onboarding and Success team would like to highlight a member of our college for their excellent work and volunteered time with New Student Orientation. For this month’s Fantastic Facilitator, we have selected Jalen Cheek!
We asked Jalen, "Why do you volunteer as a facilitator and why is it important to you?" Jalen answered, "As a staff member, it is crucial to participate in New Student Orientation because it allows me to meet both students and parents who are interested and excited to attend the college. Regarding Tech Bootcamp, I am obligated to ensure everyone knows how to properly utilize the technology they have been given, such as Blackboard, Self-Service, etc. These tools allow students to be their best, and we are at the forefront of that principle."

I'd also like to thank the wonderful instructors who have allowed me to come into your classrooms to teach and share career information with your students. As well as those who have passed along event information, visit the center in person, invite individuals to events, and participate in the events, fairs, or assist with mock interviews. For that, I say thank you!
