How long have you worked for CCCC?
1 year, 4 months
Describe what you do for CCCC.
I advise Nursing, Medical Assistant, AA/AS, MMSI, and new incoming students.
Where were you born?
Columbia, South Carolina
Educational credentials?
M.A. in Marriage and Family Counseling from Liberty University and B.A. in Sociology from Fayetteville State University.
Part-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!
November Cougar Champion: Beatrice Matthews
Beatrice Matthews
Assistance Center Facilitator
How long have you worked for CCCC?
I’ve been working with CCCC since 2013. I started working here at the Culinary Department on Pittsboro Campus with Chef Hamm.
What brought you to CCCC?
After being in manufacturing for so many years, I went back to school to get my degree in Business Administration.
After graduation, I was looking for a job. I discovered a local organization that helped me get the position here with the college.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
The position here at the college consists of administrative duties here at the AAC. I interact and assist faculty and staff with testing as well as the students. I help students find resources when needed. I proctor tests as well as schedule guest departments (TRiO, Career Center and WRC Coaches) a place to meet with students and have a place to work when they are visiting the center. I oversee Lab Assistants and organize their work schedule. I also schedule tutoring appointments, as well as help with the hiring process of our tutors. There are so may hats that I wear here at the AAC I cannot remember it all. I often refer to myself as an "AirTrack Controller" because I’m always directing people where they need to go and the best way to get there. Lol.
Where were you born?
I was born in Chatham County.
Where did you grow up?
I was raised in the Siler City community.
Where do you live now?
I currently live in Siler City.
Educational credentials?
I graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
Tell us about your family!
I have one daughter who currently lives with me and a son who also lives in Siler City. Both parents are deceased. I have a host of brothers and sisters. I have two aunts that I am particularly fond of that played a very significant role in my upbringing. Being brought up in a large family with a community of many aunts, uncles and cousins, we truly bring a new meaning to "It takes a village to raise a child." I don’t have an official pet that I call my own, but I have become the house where stray cats come to live. Currently I have about eight stray cats that come to my house to eat twice a day.
What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I enjoy attending church and taking walks. I like to read non-fiction books. I thoroughly enjoy planning family dinners and spending time with them. I enjoy special times out to dinner or movies with my daughter.
Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why (from a favorite book, tv show, movie, etc.)?
I love the Hallmark Channel. My all-time favorite fictional character is “Vivian Ward” (Julia Roberts) from the movie "Pretty Woman."
What is your favorite meal?
I love a good steak and prefer Outback Steakhouse for a really good meal.
WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

The CCCC Culinary program held a secret ingredient (sweet potatoes) culinary battle on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the CCCC Chatham Main Campus in Pittsboro.
Faith Looper was the student winner with a fall inspired salad with a roasted sweet potato vinaigrette. Other student participants were Shelly Alwine (sweet potatoes gratin), Kionna Barrett (sweet potato churro), and Chris Syros (house-made vanilla ice cream with sweet potato-apple flambe).
Faith Looper (sweet potato stir fry over rice) then won a culinary battle with CCCC Culinary Department Chair Regina Minter (sweet potato, collard, couscous Quinoa bowl with a coconut avocado sauce).
The Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Carl Bryan of the CCCC Health & Fitness Sciences program. Judges were CCCC’s Christy Jones and Dr. Denise Martin, and Neha Shah of the Pittsboro-Siler City Convention & Visitors Bureau. Event organizer was Danielle Bruner, CCCC Coordinator of Accreditation, Enrollment, and Retention. Special guests included students of the Northwood High School culinary class.
CCCC Culinary students provided food samples for the guests. This was an opportunity for the college to showcase one of its Professional Services career community programs.

Academic Advising Website
Dr. Julie Dixon, Associate Dean of Academic Advising and Transfer, and Morgan Steele, Director of Web and Creative Strategy, have completed the redesign of the Academic Advising website. Check it out!
New Department Names
Did you hear? There are some new department names you need to know! If you missed the announcement in the November issue of Cougar Bytes, here are the details:
Onboarding and Advising Division
- Admissions → Student Onboarding and Success
- Registrar’s Office → Student Records and Registrar
Student Services Division
- Student Onboarding and Outreach → Student Outreach and Recruitment
It is our hope that these changes accurately reflect the services these offices provide to both students and employees. While department names have changed, the core functions of each of these departments have not changed.
Each of these departments will be working with Marketing and Business Services over the next several months to update their names on webpages, signage, printed materials, etc. We appreciate your patience as we work through these changes.
As part of our Title III Grant/NAVIGATE work, we will continue to work toward making our college’s processes, services, and resources as clear as possible for our college community.
SEWA Beats
The Central Carolina Community College Business Technologies Career Community hosted SEWA Beats on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center.

Foundation Honors Donors, Scholarship Recipients
Donors and scholarship recipients were recognized during the CCCC Foundation Scholarship Luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center.
The Emcee for the event was Margaret Murchison, WWGP Radio News Director and CCCC Foundation Board Member.
Lynda Turbeville, CCCC Foundation Board Chair, provided welcoming remarks. Invocation was by the Rev. Gary Moore. The meal was provided by CCCC's Central Carolina Culinary Institute."
"To each of you, our beloved donors, we are forever grateful for your investment in the lives of each and every one of the students here today," said Dr. Emily C. Hare, Executive Director of the CCCC Foundation.
Congratulations Scott Byington
NACACA, the Global Association of Academic Advising, recently published its latest book Comprehensive Advisor Training and Development.
Associate Vice President Scott Byington was a co-author for one of the chapters of the book and participated in a book signing at NACADA's annual conference in Portland, Ore.
Congratulations, Scott!
Chatbot is Coming to CCCC
CCCC is excited to be working with Ivy.Ai to develop a cutting-edge, customizable AI chatbot that will soon be deployed on our public-facing website. This chatbot will enhance our ability to communicate with both students and the general public by providing quick and automated information on demand, as part of our ongoing Title III (NAVIGATE) efforts to simplify and streamline the onboarding and advising experience.
The chatbot’s functionality will grow and improve over time so that it is able to answer more complicated questions, serving as a front-line resource while also deferring more complicated inquiries to the appropriate offices as needed via a ticket system.
With the chatbot able to answer many of the most common questions that students ask, we expect our staff to benefit from freed-up time and resources as the result of having a reduced number of incoming phone calls and general inquiry emails.
We will be sharing more information with you soon about the chatbot as development continues.

TRiO SSS Events
TRIO SSS Visits the Temple Theatre
On Dec. 1, TRiO Student Support Services students were able to see A Christmas Carol at the Temple Theatre with the help of Bianka Stumpf and the ACES program.
This exhilarating performance was an opportunity for students to experience a live theater show and learn more about theater etiquette. This was many of our students' first time ever seeing a play, going to the Temple Theatre, or watching A Christmas Carol.
Thank you for this amazing opportunity to allow our students to continue experiencing positive and meaningful events.
We welcome the opportunity to visit your class, in person or virtually, to speak to your students about the many services TRiO offers. If you are interested, please sign up with the TRIO SSS Spring 2023 Class Visit Form.

PERSONNEL NOTES
Fantastic Facilitator
Angela Crisp-Sears
The Student Onboarding and Success team would like to highlight a member of our college for their excellent work and volunteered time with New Student Orientation. For this month’s Fantastic Facilitator, we have selected Angela Crisp-Sears!
We asked Angela, "Why do you volunteer as a facilitator and why is it important to you?"
Angela answered, "I really enjoy leading orientation sessions: meeting new students, welcoming them and their families, answering their questions and reassuring them they belong at CCCC. They may not remember everything we cover in the session, but if they remember my face and my friendly attitude, they will feel comfortable talking to me when classes begin, and I can help with specific concerns. First impressions are important and I’m happy to be a part of CCCC’s early meetings with new students!"
Birth Announcement!
Please join us as we congratulate Princess Lane-McEachern and family on their new addition, Isaiah Zyair McEachern who arrived on Nov. 1. Princess is an Employment Counselor for CCCC's Job Corps Scholars Program and a devoted colleague who supports students in achieving their post secondary and/or employment goals. Congratulations to the McEachern family!
ESL Instructor Needed

Faculty Volunteers for Personal Training Needed
Faculty Volunteers for Personal Training Needed on Lee Main Campus for Spring 2023 Semester
The Health and Fitness Science students are in need of faculty and staff volunteers that wish to have 50-minute personal training sessions twice a week. Sessions would start Jan. 23 and last until April.
Sessions have to be at the Lee Main Campus and have to be during the typical student hours of 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Each volunteer would have the opportunity to construct SMART goals for training with their personal trainer, have a battery of pre- and post-tests conducted on their physical status as well as physical training sessions. This is a semester-long commitment between the volunteer and the student.
The commercial value of all of these services is over $1600, so each volunteer is obtaining this for free.
If interested, please contact Dr. Carl Bryan at cbryan@cccc.edu to reserve your spot. Thanks in advance for aiding these students in their HFS education and career endeavors.

My current claim-to-fame is my unique voice. Sometimes I can be a little shy when meeting new people, but after a few belly rubs, I will be putty in your hands! I enjoy playing with toys and get along well with my other canine companions.
See all of the adoptions, or rather Happy Tails of Cougar Pets.
All adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
