SILER CITY - "Celebrating American Heroes" was the theme of the Veterans Day program on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Central Carolina Community College Siler City Center.

This event began at 10 a.m. and included classes conducted by veterans who shared their military experiences.

The presenters were Chatham County resident Dr. J. George Chall and CCCC Instructor Kyle Talbott. Chall was a World War II Army medic in the Battle of the Bulge, and upon returning from Europe, attended Columbia University on the G.I. Bill. Talbott is a Post-9/11 Navy veteran and teaches English as a Second Language at Siler City and also Spanish/College prep classes for Veterans Upward Bound.

The event included a ceremonial activity with patriotic music by vocalist Victoria Chall, accompanied by guitarist Danny Gotham, with participants in flag-arrayed formation.

Participating in the program were Siler City Police Chief Gary Tyson, who served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1985-1993, Jeff Cathcart, Commander of American Legion Post 93 in Siler City; and faculty, staff, and students of the College and Career Readiness Department (CCR). Also present were Dr. Pamela Senegal, CCCC Vice President of Economic and Community Development; Mark Hall, CCCC Chatham County Provost; and Daniel Loges, CCR Coordinator.

"Throughout history, we would never have been able to protect and defend our great American people without the soldier, sailor, airmen, or marine who would later be called veteran," said Cathcart.

"The bottom line is, veterans have given us freedom, security, and the greatest nation on earth. It is impossible to put a price on that. But we can remember them ... we can appreciate them, and we can honor their service and the sacrifices they've made on our behalf," said Cathcart.

The observance was intended to offer gratitude for deserving men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and for the year-round sacrifices of service members and their families.
