Lee Golf Classic a winner for CCCC Foundation

SANFORD - Since 1989, area golfers have been hitting the links at the Central Carolina Community College Foundation's annual Golf Classic to financially assist students at the college.

The 27th Annual Golf Classic, held Oct. 12 at the Sanford Golf Course, attracted 34 teams and raised over $27,500.

"The tournament was a huge success again this year," said Jonathan Hockaday, Foundation Golf Classic coordinator. "We are thankful for all the community support because they make this tournament what it is. Lee County has given so much to us. We will use all the proceeds from the tournament to go directly back to our students."

Since it began in Lee County, the Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000 and enabled the Foundation to award hundreds of scholarships and other financial assistance to students.

All ties were broken by a scorecard playoff starting with back nine score.

The winners of the A.M. Shotgun Round and team scores were:

First Flight:

First place - 55 - Bobby Powell, Dave Neff, Anthony Johnson, Jack Radley.

Second place - 57 - Larry Caddell, Larry Shaver, Nick Picerno, Kevin Whitaker.

Third place - 57 - Roy Ross, Bill Shilkitus, Bud Hare, Steve Carter.

Second Flight:

First place - 62 - Alan Holt, Tom McSwain, Bill Kwasnick, Ron Minter.

Second place - 63 - Gordon Richardson, Del Jones, Ed Neuse, Eric Eversole.

Third place - 63 - Mitch Peele, Keith Larick, Jay Boyette, Allen Foster.

The Closest to the Pin winners were Ed Neuse, Jack Radley, Larry Shaver, and Justin Shaw. The Longest Drive winner was Kevin Whitaker.

First Place - 52 - Craig Lister, David Wicker, Bobby Powell, Ronnie Brown.

Second Place - 55 - Joey Seagroves, John Perkins, Mark Midford, Mike Cox.

Third Place - 55 - Andy Phillips, Wayne Freeman, Chris Brown, Kent Johnson.

Second Flight:

First Place - 58 - Stephen Salmon, Curtis Salmon, Buck Womack, Robbie Currin.

Second Place - 58 - Jimmy Keen, Jimmy Martin, Robin Williams, Cliff Stephens.

Third Place - 59 - John Crumpton, Mike Large, Brandon Honeycutt, Tom Eshbach.

Third Flight:

First Place - 62 - P.J. Gay, Paul Gay, Lynn Smith, Doug Gay.

Second Place - 63 - Phillip Faulk, Marvin Johnson, Frank Layton, Mike Lassiter.

Third Place - 64 - Eric Vernon, Tom McSwain, Sam Crisp, Alan Holt.

The Closest to the Pin winners were David Wicker, Robin Williams, John Crumpton, and Craig Lister. The Longest Drive winner was P.J. Gay.

Members of the Lee County Golf Classic Committee are Phil Bradley (tournament chairman), Travis Bailey, Mikeal Basinger, David Caplan, Tom Joyner, Donnie Oldham, Chas Post, Bobby Powell, Lynda Turbeville, Bill Wilson, and CCCC President Dr. T. Eston Marchant.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.
