LILLINGTON - Central Carolina Community College is beginning a Spanish Nurse Aide I training program, which will get under way on Oct. 26 and conclude Feb. 24, 2016.
Classes will be held Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harnett Health Sciences Center, 51 Red Mulberry Way, in Lillington.
Myriam Sequi-Perez is the instructor for the class. She is a Registered Nurse and taught Nurse Aide I classes in Florida. "Myriam is very knowledgeable and ready to help students be successful in securing a job in healthcare," said Lennie Stephenson, RN, MHM, who is CCCC Director of Continuing Education Medical Programs.
The Spanish Nurse Aide I training program is designed to provide the entry level fundamental nursing skills needed to provide patient care services under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
This program is unique because it is geared toward students whose first language is Spanish. Students entering this program must have conversational English skills. The course is delivered in English and the teacher will clarify questions in Spanish to help the student fully understand the material being presented. A Spanish Nurse Aide I resource textbook is also part of the class. The student will be required to take both the written and skills portions of the State Certification Examination in English.
"Healthcare facilities in North Carolina are in need of bilingual employees to better serve patients and their family members," said Stephenson. "The Hispanic community is also in need of help to transition into healthcare careers that are in demand and provide greater opportunities for educational growth and career advancement.
"The Spanish Nurse Aide I class helps to meet the needs of the healthcare providers in our service area as well as give the Hispanic community a way to move into better paying healthcare jobs. A bilingual employee is a valuable and much needed asset to any healthcare facility," said Stephenson.
This program is designed to prepare participants for successful completion of the Nurse Aide I course and to successfully meet the requirements for listing on the Nurse Aide I Registry. The program will provide a classroom learning experience coupled with supervised comprehensive lab and clinical experiences consistent with standards of practice upheld by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and inclusive knowledge and skills required under OBRA nursing home regulations.
The Nursing Assistant I may be employed in long-term care facilities including skilled and intermediate care units, hospitals, home health agencies, private homes, family care homes, homes for the aged and disabled, adult day care centers, retirement homes, physician's office, and any other health care agency that employs nursing assistants.
Individuals interested in this program must have a high school diploma or GED, and also must have a Social Security Card.
