SANFORD -- Tierre Ramsey has been busy since May when he became the new women's basketball coach at Central Carolina Community College.

Ramsey has spoken to hundreds of families in search of the student-athletes he is bringing into the CCCC program. After all, Ramsey says he wants a family-type atmosphere for the program.

Ramsey lets the parents know of his vision for the program and what he expects from his players. "I'm going to instill in them those core values and the work ethic that is needed to be successful as they move on," he said. "I'm going to have a no-nonsense type program. I'm going to push academics first. If you can't perform in the classroom, you can't perform for me on the court."

Ramsey, a 2001 graduate of N.C. Central University, is an assistant principal at Daniels Middle School in Wake County.

Prior to his appointment at CCCC, Ramsey was an assistant recruiting coach with Louisburg College. He has coached at Cary Academy, South Stokes High School, Holly Springs High School, and Stevens Prep Academy in Raleigh.

Ramsey has worked with student-athletes for over 10 years as an individual skill development coach and mentor. He coordinated summer basketball camps, basketball tournaments, jamborees, and unsigned senior showcases for the past 8-10 years. Ramsey has taught/mentored at-risk children at local middle and high schools as a part of his passion for helping others.

Ramsey, a native of Roxboro, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with a minor in Early Childhood Education. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he obtained a Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership. He has two children - Morgan (9) and Michael (6).

Ramsey will work with a 14-member team roster. "When I recruit, I look for kids that like to work hard," said Ramsey. "Talent is great, but hard work beats talent."

CCCC Athletic Director Mike Neal says he is excited about the upcoming season. "We will be competitive with the teams we play and the schedule reflects CCCC's tradition of playing tough games early and often so when the games truly matter at the end of the season into the post season, the team can pull on that experience," said Neal. "We are recruiting talented student-athletes. These girls are good in the classroom as well as on the court. This program will enhance our campus with a renewed spirit of women's competition."
