25th Anniversary Lee Golf Classic a winner for CCCC Foundation

SANFORD - Since 1989, area golfers have been hitting the links at the Central Carolina Community College Foundation's annual Golf Classic to financially assist students at the college.

The 25th Anniversary Golf Classic, held Sept. 17 at the Sanford Golf Course, attracted 140 golfers and raised $25,000.

"The tournament was a huge success again this year" said Jonathan Hockaday, Foundation Golf Classic coordinator. "We are thankful for all the community support because they make this tournament what it is. Lee County has given so much to us. We will use all the proceeds from the tournament to go directly back to our students."

Since it began in Lee County, the Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000 and enabled the Foundation to award hundreds scholarships and other financial assistance to students.

The winners of the A.M. Shotgun Round and team scores were:

First Flight:
First place - 53 - Jack Radley, Dave Neff, Bobby Powell, and Dale Bryant;

Second Place - 55 - David Caplan, Micah Lawrence, Kevin Scott, and Ray Epley;

Third Place - 57 - Steve Carter, Jim Ulrich, Rod Brecheisen, and Bruce Miller.

Second Flight:
Three foursomes tied for First Place with team scores of 61: Phil Bradley, Joffree Bradley, Ronnie Jenkins, and Matthew Smith; David Kimbrell, Louis Bass, Tim Cowen, and Tim Cowen Jr.; and Lacy Tripp, Jonathan Hockaday, Kevin Pearson, and Robert Garrison.

Third Flight:
Two foursomes tied for First Place with team scores of 66: Harold Spivey, Gary Riddle, Jeff Poindexter, and Ricky Yow; and Ted Pauling, Ron Beech, Brian Sullivan, and Jimmy Hudson;

Third Place - 67 - Paul Sherman, Jay Boyette, Herb Vanderberry, and Allen Foster.

The Closest to the Pin winners were: Hole 2 - Tommy Ratledge, Hole 6 - Jack Radley, Hole 11 - Ron Jenkins; and Hole 14 - Bobby Powell. The Long Drive Winner was Lacy Tripp.

The winners of the P.M. Shotgun Round and team scores were:

First Flight:
First Place - 52 - Jack Radley, Brandon Honeycutt, Tom Eschbach, and Keith Thomas;

Second Place - 53 - Phil Bradley, Joffree Bradley, Tony Bloedorn, and Candi Bloedorn; Third Place - 55 - David Wicker, Kel Norman, Dave Glabicki, and Chet Chester.

Second Flight:
First Place - 59 - Robbie Campbell, Eric Vernon, Rex Brown, and Matt Brown.

Two foursomes tied for Second Place with a team score of 60: Bill Tyson, Edwin Thomas, Len Royals, and Ed Breeden; and Brad Salmon Dave Stewart, EJ Womack, and Vernon Cox.

Third Flight:
First Place - 64 - Bill Milholen, Terry Andrews, Henry Smith, and Steve Palmer.

Two foursomes tied for Second Place with team scores of 65: Mitch Peele, Lynn Gaines, Herbert Gaines, and Steve Woodson; and Mark Hundley, Lee Welch, Randy Fletcher, and Tony Quick.

The Closest to the Pin winners were:

Hole 2 - David Wicker, Hole 6 - Paul Trageser, Hole 11 - Gary Adcock, and Hole 14 -Keith Thomas. The Long Drive winner was David Caplan.

The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.
