LILLINGTON - Opportunity was the big winner as golfers wrapped up the first Central Carolina Community College Foundation Harnett Golf Classic March 20 at Chicora Golf Club.
A total of 75 golfers, in threesomes and foursomes, played a morning round, combining fun with the serious goal of raising funds to assist CCCC students who need financial help to stay in college. The proceeds will be used primarily for scholarships.
Approximately $10,000 was raised.
"I think the tournament was a huge success," said Jonathan Hockaday, CCCC Golf Classic coordinator. "The support from the Harnett County community and businesses is what helped make this tournament what it was. We are looking forward to having this event for years to come."
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.
Since 1989, the Foundation has hosted an annual Golf Classic in Lee County, raising funds for scholarships and other financial assistance for the college's students. During that time, more than $500,000 has been raised, helping hundreds of students to afford their college education.
In 2014, for the first time, the Foundation is hosting two additional Golf Classics: the one in Harnett County, and one in Chatham County on Wednesday, April 16.
