SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College's Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program graduated 20 cadets at a Jan. 2 ceremony at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. All were members of the fall day training program at the college's Emergency Services Training Center.
The graduates are qualified to serve as certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina.
Those receiving their BLET Certificates were Benjamin Boggs, Nicholas Charles, Evan Gunter, Charles Jordan, and Kyle Moore, all of Sanford; Ashley Charter, Joseph Medlin, and Ronald Sasser, all of Lillington; Conner Capshaw and James Michael, both of Fuquay-Varina; Joshua Bryant and Nicholas Taylor, both of Angier; Aaron Ledford and Joshua McIntyre, both of Pittsboro; Cris Nystrom, of Bunnlevel; Anthony Guerra, of Cameron; Hannah Bethune, of Vass; Amy Swanner, of Fayetteville; Joshua Banks, of Apex; and, Nicholas Howard, of Cary.
Special honors were awarded: Joshua McIntyre -- Most Improved Physical Fitness, Benjamin Boggs -- Fastest POPAT, Kyle Moore -- Jimmy Collins Top Gun Award, Cris Nystrom -- Highest Grade Point Average, and Cris Nystrom and Ashley Charter -- Highest State Exam Score.
Trooper Michael Baker, of the N.C. State Highway Patrol gave the graduation address and Cadet Class Leader Cris Nystrom gave the Class Response. BLET Program Director Robert Powell presented the graduation certificates.
To graduate, the cadets had to complete 624 hours of law enforcement training in areas such as criminal and motor vehicle laws, vehicle stops, first responder medical care, firearms training, driver's training, sheriff's duties, and subject control/arrest techniques.
Each graduate also passed all 35 blocks of instruction, a rigorous 12-week physical training program, and a four-hour written comprehensive state examination administered by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division.
Sponsors for the Fall 2013 Academy were the police departments of Benson, Broadway, Coats, Dunn, Erwin, Lillington, Pittsboro, and Siler City; the sheriffs' offices of Chatham County, Harnett County, Lee County and Moore County; Chatham Central High School; N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources; and the Veterans Administration.
