SANFORD - Seven Central Carolina Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training cadets received their graduation certificates May 15 at exercises at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. All were members of the Spring BLET Academy day training program at the college's Emergency Services Training Center.
Receiving their certificates were: Nicholas Kehagias, David Green, and Ellmar Benitez, all of Sanford; Jeremy Timmons and Benjamin Warren, both of Pittsboro; Jacob Davis, of Lillington; and Joseph D. Myatt, of Spring Lake.
Several of the graduates received awards for outstanding achievement during their training: Nicholas Kehagias -- Fastest Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) and Highest State Exam Average, Jeremy Timmons - Jimmy Collins Memorial Top Gun award, Jeremy Timmons and Benjamin Warren -- Highest Grade Point Average, and Jacob Davis - Most Improved Physical Fitness Award.
Trooper Michael Baker, of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, was the guest speaker for the graduation. Class Leader Nicholas Kehagias gave the class response.
The college's BLET program is under the direction of Robert Powell. The cadets had to complete 624 hours of law enforcement training in areas such as criminal and motor vehicle laws, vehicle stops, first responder medical care, firearms training, driver's training, sheriff's duties, and subject control/arrest techniques.
Each graduate also had to pass all 35 blocks of instruction, a rigorous 12-week physical training program, as well as a four-hour written comprehensive state examination administered by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division.
All graduates are qualified to be certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina.
Sponsoring agencies for the day BLET class were the Broadway Police Department, Chatham County Sheriff's Office, Chatham Central High School, Clinton Police Department, Harnett County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office,
Lillington Police Department, Pittsboro Police Department, Siler City Police Department and U.S. Veterans Administration.
