CCCC hosts Advanced Manufacturing Week events

SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College is sharing the good news that manufacturing in North Carolina offers high-skilled, well-paying careers.

Educational programs that lead to these careers will be featured at the college's campuses in Chatham, Harnett and Lee counties during the North Carolina Manufacturing Awareness Week, April 8-12.

"Manufacturing Awareness Week is an effort by a broad range of community colleges and other organizations working together to call attention to manufacturing in North Carolina," said Norman Smit, communications consultant of the N.C. Advanced Manufacturing Alliance. "It is held to raise awareness and create interest in the career possibilities within this sector. Career days are occurring at colleges statewide as well as a range of other activities."

During Manufacturing Awareness Week, Central Carolina Community College is hosting free Advanced Manufacturing Career Day open houses to introduce the public to the modern world of manufacturing. Youth and adults interested in learning about manufacturing careers are particularly encouraged to attend. Instructors of manufacturing-related classes will be there to discuss training for good jobs in the field. Students will demonstrate some advanced manufacturing equipment.

"Manufacturing has changed in the last 10 to 15 years," said Dr. Stephan Athans, CCCC dean of Vocational and Technical Programs. "Many people have the wrong perception, associating manufacturing with dark, dingy mills. Manufacturing jobs are now high technology with long-term career opportunities with good wages. There is a lot of automation and use of robotics."

Advanced manufacturing is modern, sophisticated and uses cutting edge technology to create products used in a wide variety of fields, such as aviation, communications and health care.

Advanced Manufacturing Career Day open houses will be held at Central Carolina Community College's campus in Lillington from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday, April 8; at the campus in Sanford from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9; and at the campus in Pittsboro from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, April 11.

The scheduled events are:

Harnett County Campus
Open House - 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday, April 8
Etheridge Advanced Technology Building,
1075 E. Cornelius Harnett Blvd., Lillington.
The Computer Integrated Machining and Laser and Photonics Technology programs will be highlighted.

Harnett County Campus Middle School Tours
Tuesday, April 9
County middle schools will bring their students for a tour of the Harnett Campus and the programs it offers.

Lee County Campus
Open House - 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9
Joyner Hall, Wilkinson Hall, and the Science Building
1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford.
The highlighted programs will be: Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Information Technology, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, Computer Integrated Machining Technology, Industrial Systems Technology, Welding Technology, and, Bioprocess Manufacturing Technology.

Lee Campus High School Instructional Day Tours
Thursday, April 11
County high schools will bring their students for a tour of the Lee Campus and the programs it offers.

CAD Camp for Middle School Students
Saturday, April 13
Wilkinson Hall, Lee County Campus

Chatham County Campus
Open House - 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, April 11
Sustainable Technologies Building, 764 West St., Pittsboro.
The programs highlighted will be Green Building Technology, Laser & Photonics Technology, and Biofuels Technology.
