CCCC-Lee graduates 10 in law enforcement

SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College's Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program in Lee County graduated 10 cadets in a May 10 ceremony at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.

Those graduating were Michael C. Poole, Michael B. Klingman and Jimmy L. Holbrook, all of Lee County; Robert A. Pelkey and Marcus R. Rummel, both of Harnett County; Daniel J. Castlebury and Zachary A. Jenrette, both of Chatham County; Dustin L. Miller and Delanie M. Warcup, both of Harnett County; and, Alvin McCallister, of Moore County.

Awards were presented to the cadets during the ceremony: Most Improved Physical Training - Castlebury, Best POPAT (Police Officer Physical Abilities Test) - Klingman, Top Gun - Pelkey, Most Motivational - Warcup, and Highest Class GPA and Highest State Exam - McCallister. Miller served as Class Leader.

The guest speaker for the event was Officer Benson D. Wise, of the Sanford Police Department's Selective Enforcement Unit. Wise graduated from the college's BLET program in 2004 and then earned his Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice at CCCC in 2008. He is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. Wise is a combat veteran, having served with the 18th Airborne during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

The BLET program provides a uniform and professional level of training to men and women interested in a law enforcement career. The cadets completed more than 600 hours of law enforcement training in areas such as criminal and motor vehicle laws, vehicle stops, first responder medical care, firearms training, driver's training, sheriff's duties, and subject control/arrest techniques. All also received Oleoresin Capsicum (OC Pepper Spray) Certification.

Each graduate had to pass all 35 blocks of instruction, a rigorous 12-week physical training program, as well as a four-hour written comprehensive state examination administered by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division.
