Stars show up for CCCC's 'Hollywood Style' show

SANFORD – It wasn’t heavily publicized, but a parade of Hollywood stars was on hand April 18 at Central Carolina Community College’s Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.

MTV’s Snooki was there. So was hip-hop star Nikki Minaj. 1930s cartoon star Betty Boop even put in an appearance, as well as comedian Kat Williams.

Well, maybe not exactly. But the intent of CCCC’s fourth annual cosmetology exposition – this year’s theme was “Hollywood Style” – was to get as close as possible to bringing the stars to Sanford.

Janice Fenner, chair of the school’s cosmetology program, said the expo featured students working to get models looking as close to the stars as possible – hair, makeup, nails, clothing.

“It’s a celebrity look-alike contest,” Fenner explained, noting that one student even worked up a look-alike of the late Elizabeth Taylor.

About 70 students from CCCC’s Lee and Harnett campuses’ cosmetology/aesthetics programs, West Harnett Center’s barbering program, and the Dunn School of Cosmetology participated.

Cosmetology student Kelcey White, 21, of Sanford won first place in the event’s “celebrity” category by dressing her friend Erin Childress up as Snooki, one of the stars of the MTV reality series “Jersey Shore.”

“We had our ideas planned out ahead of time, and we got to practice them a little all last week, but we had to actually do everything today,” White said, explaining that it took her from 8 to 10 a.m. the day of the competition to achieve the award-winning look on Childress, who is 25.
For her part, Childress said she enjoyed sitting through the process.

“I didn’t get bored at all, it was actually kind of fun getting dressed up,” she said. “It’s fun to see how the hair and make-up process works.”

Another participant, 21-year-old cosmetology student Alyson Williams, made her friend Aigner Brown, also 21, up to look like singer Nikki Minaj.

“You’ve got to do a lot of research,” Williams said. “You’ve got to have the hair just right, the make-up, the coloring. It takes a lot of work.”

Other winners at Monday’s event included Christy Odom (mannequin bridal), Crystal Vincent (mannequin fantasy), Janice Lee (mannequin day nails), Elizabeth Aguilar (live fantasy nails) Mark Joas (hip hop male hair cutting), Angelita Hessey (live fantasy make-up), Evelia Toribio (evening make-up), and Yajaira Mendoza (baby doll make-up).
Fenner, the cosmetology department chair, said the program takes a year-and-a-half to two years for a full time student and two-and-a-half to three years for part time students. Students can work toward either a degree or a certificate at the Lee or Harnett campuses or the Dunn School of Cosmetology.

“It’s a very creative curriculum,” she said. “And this event was not only a competition, but also a showcase. We have some very talented students.”

In addition to the overall cosmetology program, in which students learn hair, make-up and nails, there’s also an aesthetics program in which students focus only on make-up and skin care.
