SANFORD – Phi Beta Lambda business club students at Central Carolina Community College won big at the PBL State Leadership Conference, bringing home five awards. Two of the CCCC winners will move on to competitions at the organization’s National Conference to be held in Orlando, Fla.
More than 300 members of PBL chapters from community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities across North Carolina attended the conference, held April 7-10 in Charlotte. Central Carolina was represented by five students and advisor Drew Goodson, accounting instructor. Each of the five placed in an event.
The top CCCC winners were Nick Wicker, of Mamers, First Place in Accounting and Sixth Place in Business Law, and Maria Nieto, also of Mamers, Second Place in Justice Administration. Both Wicker and Nieto are eligible to compete at the National Conference.
“Winning really felt great,” said Wicker, who is also club president. “It was satisfying to see my hard work in raising money to be able to attend and the studying for my events pay off in a tangible way.”
Other CCCC winners were: Shirley Rijkse, of Broadway, Third Place in Client Service and Eighth place in Public Speaking; Cheryl Reynolds, of Cameron, Third Place in Job Interview; and Nora Stallings, of Liberty, Fifth Place in HR Management.
“I am so proud of all our PBL members from CCCC who competed at the State Conference,” said advisor Drew Goodson. “They worked very hard, both raising money to attend the conference and preparing to compete and that hard work paid off nicely!”
The Phi Beta Lambda chapter at CCCC was established in 2006 for students enrolled in business-related programs. Since then, members have competed and won at regional, state, and national levels. Members also involve themselves in community and college service. The chapter currently has 14 members.
