SANFORD – Teddy Byrd, chairman of the Harnett County Board of Commissioners, will deliver the commencement address at Central Carolina Community College’s Aug. 8 summer graduation.
The graduation takes place at 11 a.m. at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, in Sanford. During the summer, 89 students completed degree programs, 102 earned diplomas, and 84, certificates.
Byrd has served on the board of commissioners since 1996, serving as chairman since 2000. He is president and CEO of Teddy J. Byrd Agency, Inc., which runs four Nationwide Insurance agencies in Coats, Angier, and Erwin.
Byrd is a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, Logistics Corps. He served in Iraq from April 2003 to March 2004 and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has served 27 years in the military and currently serves as chief of the 207th Army Liaison Team at Fort Bragg.
His community service includes membership on the Harnett Forward Together Committee, founding president of the Coats Jaycees, past president of the Coats Chamber of Commerce, member of the Angier Rotary Club, and member of Coats Junior Order of Mechanics. He is a deacon at Coats Baptist Church.
He has served on the Harnett County Social Services Board, Health Board, and Aging Advisory Council, as well as on the board of First Citizens Bank. He is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion.
Byrd is a lifelong resident of Coats and a 1985 graduate of Campbell University. He and his wife, Shelia, are the parents of three children.
