SANFORD - September is Literacy Awareness Month and Wal-Mart is giving back to the local community by partnering with Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) to promote basic skills and literacy in Chatham, Ha ett and Lee Counties.
The CCCC Shawtown campus in Lillington received a $1,750 check from the Erwin Wal-Mart. The Shawtown campus, where basic skills and literacy courses are available, received the money through a Wal-Mart Good.Works. community involvement grant and the money will go toward beautification projects for the campus grounds.
The CCCC Basic Skills program in Chatham County was awarded a $500 literacy grant by the Siler City Wal-Mart. The grant monies will be used for literacy promotion and education in Chatham County in order to increase basic skills services to the community. It will also be used for the development of seated and distance education literacy classes that directly serve the community.
In additional support of Literacy Awareness Month, the Siler City Wal-Mart will host the CCCC Race 4 Literacy Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 24. The CCCC Chatham County Basic Skills staff and students will be in front of Wal-Mart during the event to hand out materials and answer questions. Race 4 Literacy Day will also feature face painting, balloons, door prizes and giveaways.
Wal-Mart also gave $1,500 to the CCCC Jonesboro Center to support literacy initiatives in the Sanford community. The center will use the funds to purchase supplies for students.
All three Wal-Mart contributions - a total of $3,750 - were made possible through the Wal-Mart Good.Works. program and Wal-Mart Foundation dollars. According to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the community involvement program is based on the philosophy of operating globally and giving back locally.
