Central Carolina Community College has canceled its fall sports season for the 2020-21 academic year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
CCCC competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), which announced on Monday that a majority of competition will be moved to the spring semester.
CCCC sports impacted are cross country, golf, and volleyball. There will be no CCCC cross country for the upcoming school year.
Current plans are for CCCC's golf and volleyball to compete in the spring.
The NJCAA plans for basketball to begin in January. CCCC has a men’s and women’s basketball team.
"While we are very disappointed that we will not be able to compete in the fall season, we will always put the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches as our top priority," said CCCC Athletic Director Jonathan Hockaday. "We feel that this is the best decision for our student athletes during this unprecedented time with COVID-19."

At the end of June, I indicated we would be updating our procedures and communication regarding COVID-19 potential exposure, positive cases and negative cases. We want to ensure the consistency of our processes so that you are comfortable knowing who should and will be contacted, while both prioritizing the safety of the college family and maintaining appropriate confidentiality of impacted individuals. As we work through a unique summer semester, we appreciate your commitment to keeping CCCC safe. We always strive to provide a quality learning experience for our students, and we have demonstrated our strength as an institution over these past three months.
As we approach the Fall 2020 semester, please review the following COVID-related updates regarding our academic calendar and college operations.
2020-2021 Academic Calendar
The 2020-2021 academic year will begin as scheduled on Monday, August 17, 2020.
Over the past month, the College engaged with faculty, staff, and students in a number of ways to discuss potential changes to the academic calendar in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The result of those discussions was the College should begin as scheduled with appropriate measures in place for classroom and personal safety.
Additionally, all departments in Curriculum, Workforce Continuing Education, and College & Career Readiness are preparing to “go virtual” again in case modifications are needed due to COVID-19 infection rates.
Below is a description of measures currently planned to provide a safe learning environment and to protect high-risk members of the College family, as we make plans to reopen CCCC during the Fall 2020 semester.
There are numerous benefits to a face-to-face learning environment. With that in mind, CCCC remains committed to safety as our top priority when making decisions about our return to face-to-face instruction. Numerous provisions have been made to protect the health and safety of all students and employees, including:
- A review of classroom dimensions and furniture has taken place in every classroom on all main campuses, sites, and centers. Classroom capacities are being reduced to allow for appropriate physical distancing in curriculum, continuing education, and CCR courses.
- Departments have moved many classes to 100% online or made adjustments to offer additional blended (combination of online and face-to-face) course sections that reduce the amount of time on campus across curriculum, continuing education, and in CCR.
- In Curriculum, additional online sections are being added with synchronous online requirements. These will be coded in the Colleague system with the “C” section number (e.g. PSY 150 LC1). Although the modality will be 100% online, these courses will require specific synchronous meeting times (e.g. MW, 9 – 9:50 a.m.) via Blackboard Collaborate.
- The College is also reviewing its technology capacity and making necessary upgrades to equipment to record more lectures or have the appropriate technology to maximize distancing efforts in certain departments as necessary.
- Increased availability of hand sanitizing stations across all campuses, sites, and centers.
- Classrooms will be cleaned more often and in a coordinated effort between faculty and facility staff members.
The College has formed a Phase 3 Taskforce to review recommended guidelines for reopening from the North Carolina Community College System, the N.C. Department of Health & Human Services and the CDC. As we approach the Fall 2020 semester, expect to see an updated set of procedures and guidelines for resuming face-to-face and on-campus work for students and employees. A majority of employees continue to telework and will do so until further notice as the Taskforce reviews recommendations and devises a plan for a safe return.
At this point, it is safe to say that you can expect to see face mask requirements and recommendations, physical distancing measures across all campuses and departments, and other best practices put into place. Ultimately, we strive to minimize exposure to protect our community’s health and minimize risk to our College family for the planned return to an on-campus learning environment.
Graduation Ceremony Plans
- College & Career Readiness Virtual Graduation, Thursday, July 29 at 6 p.m. Eligible graduates and their families will receive information from the College & Career Readiness Department.
- Curriculum Graduation, Thursday, August 6 The postponed graduation ceremonies are being planned for August 6 to take place in a limited, alternate format. Safety precautions will be in place and social distancing will be practiced. Eligible students will be contacted by the Registrar’s Office in the coming weeks with more details. College employees will also be provided with additional information soon about their involvement in the ceremonies.
- Continuing Education Medical Programs Graduation, Date TBD Many of these programs have recently begun to resume their work to complete paused coursework from the spring semester. Look for announcements later this summer.

The Summer 2020 semester will start as scheduled on May 20, 2020.
Most classes will begin in an online capacity. Some programs aligned with "essential businesses" will resume May 20 in a limited capacity.
When the Governor signs an executive order to move North Carolina into Phase 2 of its plan to reopen, the College will likely begin to resume face-to-face class with social distancing and safety precautions in place.

Student Emergency Funds Now Available!
Many of you have been patiently waiting for information regarding how the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act will be distributed to CCCC students. Please be informed we have received $1,211,050 to provide grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To be qualified for HEERF funding, a student must have:
- incurred expenses for new arrangements that had to be made due to the closure of college facilities--such as expenses for: food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and/or childcare
- filed a FAFSA application, established a valid EFC (thus eligible for federal financial aid)
- must be enrolled in a degree-seeking program for Spring 2020 and/or Summer 2020
It is imperative that students who are graduating this Spring 2020 semester submit applications by May 15, 2020. All qualified students will receive funding via check in the mail. It is extremely important that students have updated their address because checks will be sent to the current address we have on file.
These funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. The highest grant amounts are provided to eligible students who exhibit the highest financial need as determined from their financial aid application. Furthermore, emergency grant award amounts for students who are enrolled less than full time will be prorated accordingly. For more information, please visit CCCC HEERF Grant Website.
Please note, we understand that many students are experiencing extreme financial distress right now. The HEERF grant is meant to help supplement your financial needs. We know that for many of you, the grant is not enough. If you continue to experience financial distress, please review the Financial Aid website for more emergency grant options and/or visit CCCC Cares website for more information regarding receiving further assistance.

The information below describes the first round of adjustments to the Spring 2020 academic calendar as a result of time missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The College specifically states “first-round” due to the uncertainty of if and when we will resume with face-to-face instruction in any capacity this semester. Expect future updates as we receive guidance from the NC Community College System, health departments, and other state and accrediting agencies. As always, our goal is to facilitate learning and maximize success for you.
Here's where we are today:
Student Break on April 10-14 continues.
During this time period, you can still log into your Blackboard courses and continue working in your online coursework. However, no assignments will be due during this time period, and no exams will be administered. You will also have no online (synchronous) meetings scheduled with your instructors.
When you are not studying, use this time as a recharge to prepare yourself for the final month of the semester!
Future Calendar Announcements
Per guidance by the North Carolina Community College System, face-to-face instruction was officially suspended statewide as of March 23, 2020 until further notice.
Currently, your instructors are allowed to make up time missed in a number of ways, such as placing coursework online or scheduling online meetings.
Make-up work will look very different depending on your academic program and class schedule. Your instructors will provide details in each of your respective Blackboard courses and/or via Cougarmail.
Please know that as of today, all classes regularly scheduled to conclude at the end of the semester will do so. However, in some programs with a high number of lab and clinical hours, instructors will communicate requirements for students to finish those courses.
Career & College Promise (CCP/High School) Students
Our hope is you will be able to complete most courses online to receive a grade on your college transcript. However, if you are unable to continue in the online coursework, contact your CCP advisor to discuss the possibility of withdrawal from the course. For high school seniors, if your course requires a high number of lab, shop, clinic, or salon hours that cannot be met by the end of the spring semester, expect that your CCP advisor will discuss course withdrawal with you. Look for additional communications from your advisor, or from Dr. Sara Newcomb, Director of Secondary Partnerships.

Some of you may be wondering if the Stay-at-home order issued by Governor Cooper changes anything the college is currently doing through our modified online instruction and support. In answer to this question, it does not. Everything we are currently doing and currently have in place to support you during this challenging time is continuing.
Education is considered an essential business. The CCCC web-page (Student Resources) indicates how to access the resources available, including the WiFi access in specific parking lot locations--as long as we maintain social distancing according to the procedures we have in place.
As I continue to hope each of you stays healthy, I want to assure you of our support for your continued successful education while we also work to slow the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Let's unite in the effort to slow the spread. I am proud of you Cougar Nation! #CCCCSTRONG !

The Central Carolina Community College and Career Readiness (CCR) program is transitioning to online classes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
All High School Equivalency (HSE) and Adult High School Diploma (AHS) classes are transitioning to distance classes April 1.
All English as Second Language (ESL) and Civics/Citizenship classes are transitioning to distance classes April 6.

Students completing graduation requirements for their program of study at the end of the Spring 2020 semester will need to complete and submit a graduation application and forward it to their academic advisor. The deadline for submitted applications is April 9, 2020.

Starting, Monday, March 30, the college is making free WiFi available to students and employees in specific parking lot locations. At selected sites, access is available from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students and employees are expected to maintain social distancing by remaining in their vehicles while using the free WiFi.
As a reminder, no restrooms will be available because buildings are closed, and please continue respecting the college's tobacco-free campus policy.

Hello Spring 2020 and Fall 2019 Graduates,
It is with a sad heart that we must inform you that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with respect to the CDC recommendations of gatherings no greater than 50 people and Governor Cooper's Executive Order, CCCC's Spring Graduation Ceremonies are being postponed until a later time. So that you and your families can adjust your travel and scheduling plans, we have determined that it is best to inform you of this decision now and ask for your understanding during these trying times.
The ceremony postponement will not stop your graduation! Once your course work for your credential has been successfully completed, and you have applied to graduate, your awarded credential will be reflected on your transcript. Actual credentials will be mailed once the Board of Trustees have conferred the credentials at the end of the term.
The College has made plans to hold a potential summer ceremony to honor our graduates on August 6, 2020 at the DAW Civic Center. This would be to honor all Fall 2019, Spring 2020, and Summer 2020 graduates. Please keep in mind, though, that such a ceremony can only be safely held if the current health crisis has improved and restrictive measures are no longer in place. In the meantime, the Student Services Division will also be examining other possible options to honor your accomplishment if that potential ceremony cannot occur. As a candidate for graduation, please complete the following questionnaire below.

If you will complete your coursework in the spring and have not completed the graduation application. The spring graduation application due date has been extended to April 9th. The summer graduation application is due June 18th. You may return the graduation applications to your faculty advisor who will then perform a degree audit evaluation and forward to the Records Office. Electronic signatures via use of your CCCC email are acceptable.

Beginning March 23, to the greatest extent possible, most in-person courses will be moved to an online format. Students may find that list on this Spring 2020 Transition to Online Document.
Although some classes and labs will meet in-person at a future date, no in-person class meetings will occur until further notice. When that date is determined, all CCCC employees and students will be notified. The list of classes that would continue in-person at a future date can be found on this Spring 2020 Continues In-Person Document.
CCCC will no longer issue grades of "WF" (failing grade) for the spring 2020 semester. Therefore, students are encouraged to continue in their online coursework and utilize available resources (see post from 3/14/2020) as best as possible.
Students who have limited experience with distance education courses are encouraged to review these DE Student Resources. Students can request support online through Upswing, the online Writing & Reading Center, or the CCCC Library.

Employees who do not have an approved teleworking plan should continue to report to work until otherwise directed.

Bookstore Website Remains Open with Free Shipping: Physical Bookstore Closed
Due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) safety concerns, our administration has made the decision to close many campus buildings including the physical bookstore location. However, the bookstore website remains open, and is extending FREE GROUND SHIPPING to avoid disruption.
The bookstore’s priority is to ensure the campus community has textbooks and other essential items.

As a result of the ongoing concerns with the cases of COVID-19 in the Triangle Region and its surrounding areas, Central Carolina will temporarily implement the following teleworking strategies effective March 16 until further notice. All requests will be submitted using the CCCC Teleworking Request Form through supervisor and division administration, ultimately to appropriate senior administrator for approval.
Employees Who Can Telework
Employees who can telework and still maintain college operations for which they are responsible will submit telework request form through supervisor. The work schedule and strategies will be developed in partnership between employee and immediate supervisor.
Employees Who Are at Higher Risk
Employees who are at higher risk due to ongoing health conditions are allowed to establish telework schedule / strategies with immediate supervisor. If the employee’s current job duties cannot be accomplished via teleworking, alternate duties (important for maintaining college operations) may be assigned during teleworking period. The employee may also take accrued leave as well.
Employees Who Are Unable to Physically Report
Employees who are unable to physically report for work due to COVID-19 impacted closure of public K-12 schools and no accessible childcare are allowed to establish telework/alternate schedule strategies with immediate supervisor. If the employee’s current job duties cannot be accomplished via teleworking, alternate duties (important for maintaining college operations) may be assigned as needed during teleworking period. The employee may also take accrued leave as well.
Rotating Skeleton Crew (Social Distancing)
The college leadership will work with employees to develop a rotating skeleton crew (social distancing) as necessary to keep computer labs open for students, finance, IT and maintenance infrastructure intact as essential to maintain college operations.
For Employees Who Cannot Meet College Job Requirements Through Remote/Alternate Working Opportunities
Make-up work may be assigned by the immediate supervisor. This make-up work must meet college operation needs and should be scheduled as timely as possible. The assigned plan and documentation of the made-up work must be provided to the respective division senior administrator. The senior administrator will approve the plan prior to its execution and should promptly receive the documentation of made-up time.
Challenges Not Met by Any of The Above Provisions
Any employee work-schedule challenges that are not met by any of the above provisions shall be submitted to the office of the president for further consideration.

As possible, Clinicals, Fieldwork, and Work-Based Learning may continue to meet if the work site allows students to attend. Faculty will inform students directly in those specific programs.

By now you are aware of the steps the College is taking to protect the well-being of our students and employees concerning the COVID 19 virus threat. As a reminder, your Spring Break is now extended until March 20, 2020. Many classes will be changing over to an online format and other classes will be making adjustments to their scheduled meetings. Please read the information that will be provided to you by your instructors/department chairs about these adjustments and refer any questions about your courses to them.
As we go through this unique semester transition, please be aware that the established student support services the College provides WILL BE functioning to support and assist you with your enrollment for this term! Unless there is an absolute need on your part, physically coming to campus is most likely not required to get the assistance you need. Please refer to the below information to understand how and where to receive any needed assistance.
I. Admissions/Registrar’s Office/Financial Aid:

Special Notice to Students from Records Office:
The Graduation Application deadline has been extended to March 27th. A separate email with the application attached has been sent via Cougar News email notification. You can complete the application and send to your advisor for his or her signature and approval. Your advisor will complete your curriculum evaluation or check sheet and forward your graduation application to the Records Office or communicate any deficits to you and advise you about next steps.
The Last day to Withdraw to receive a W on your transcript will shift due to the extension of Spring Break:
- the 16-week WF date will shift from April 9 to April 24.
- the 12-week WF date will shift from April 21 to April 24.
- the second 8-week WF date will shift from April 28 to April 30.
Any withdrawals after these dates will results in a WF (failing grade) on the transcript.
Summer and Fall 2020 course schedules have been made accessible in Web Advisor, and registration will open on schedule. Please work with your faculty advisor remotely if you cannot set up a face-to-face appointment.
- Current student registration for summer and fall opens April 6th. Student email account (Cougarmail) can be used as your electronic signature for any college paperwork that must be handled virtually.
- New student registration opens for summer April 27th.
- New student registration opens for fall June 1st.
II. The Cougar Market:

The Cougar Market is CCCC's Food Pantry and supports student success by ensuring no student goes hungry because of a lack of income or access to food. The Cougar Market is stocked with non-perishable snacks and meal items to temporarily alleviate immediate food insecurity for students and their families.
Moving forward, the Cougar Market on the Lee Campus will be operating on a limited schedule: Monday and Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm. If you need to visit the Cougar Market outside of these posted hours, please visit the Bell Welcome Center or call the desk at 919-718-7300.

III. Academic Assistance Centers:
- Online Tutoring: In an effort to maintain our support of students and the transition to distance education, tutoring is offered online through Upswing. Please follow these steps to get started with online tutoring:

- Click on new user and enter your Cougarmail email address. (Your Upswing account can only be activated using your Cougarmail address. If you need assistance accessing your Cougarmail account, please call 919-718-7397.)
- Log into your Cougarmail email account and open the email from Upswing with the link for password creation.
- Return to CCCC's Upswing Website to log in using your Cougarmail and newly created password.

Writing & Reading Center Online: All students requiring Writing and Reading Center assistance should submit essays through the CCCC Online Writing Lab (OWL)
While we strive to provide feedback within 72 hours, please be advised that delays may be experienced during periods of high-volume submissions. (Students may also choose to utilize Upswing for feedback on writing assignments by logging in and clicking the “Upload an assignment for review” button.).
- The Academic Assistance Centers have taken the following precautions to increase the safety of our community:
- Test proctoring services for public patrons have been temporarily suspended at the Lee Academic Assistance Center at this time. We will update this page when normal testing services are able to be resumed.
- Test proctoring services for previously scheduled UNC Online exams at the Chatham Academic Assistance Center will continue.
- STEM Lab drop-in tutoring services have been temporarily suspended on all campuses. We will update this page when the STEM Lab returns to normal service hours. We encourage students who normally meet with STEM Lab tutors to utilize Upswing online tutoring.

V. Advisors and Advising:
Students are encouraged to begin planning their class schedules for Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 in preparation for the upcoming advising and registration periods. These schedules are now available in WebAdvisor and posted online.
Students can reach out to their academic advisor through Aviso or Cougarmail via the CCCC Portal. More information, including how to contact your advisor, is available on the Advising Website.
VI. Library Services:
The CCCC Libraries will continue to provide full services and access to resources. We will be taking extra precautions with disinfecting library surfaces, particularly with computers. We encourage students to also contact us via chat, phone, or email to renew materials or for help with research assignments if you cannot come to campus in person. Library instruction will be offered online; instructors should contact the librarian at their campus to make arrangements. Library hours for the week of March 16th - 20th will be 7:30am to 5:00pm. Regular hours will resume beginning the week of March 23rd unless the situation with COVID-19 changes again. The library staff may be reached as follows:

For students who might not have internet access in their home: Charter Communications has indicated it will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Select programs (e.g. Basic Law Enforcement Training, Clinicals, Fieldwork, Work-Based Learning) may continue to meet March 16-20 as possible. Faculty will inform students directly in those specific programs.
Continuing Education and College & Career Readiness (Adult High School, ESL, High School Equivalency) classes will operate as normal on March 16.

Key procedures that are being implemented, effective immediately:
- Only essential travel is allowed at least through the end of the month (March 31)
- No new travel authorizations will be approved until further notice
- College-organized gatherings are being redesigned as possible and appropriate in the following ways:
- reduced size of group interaction,
- switched to virtual format,
- No outside groups will be allowed to utilize campus facilities in spaces where students typically meet
- We are reviewing our custodial procedures to determine additional strategies that will be implemented for stepped-up disinfection (some of these are already being implemented)
- Faculty are determining/developing potential strategies to finish the semester limiting required meetings in the event we make that decision
- The President's Council will meet weekly to assess which implemented procedures should be continued and if there are needed additional ones

The administration of the college is monitoring health concerns in North Carolina and the nation on a daily basis. The health of CCCC students, along with the health of CCCC employees, is of the utmost importance. As a useful reference guide on appropriate health protocols and steps, please refer to the Everyday Preventive Measures section of this webpage.
Additionally, the college has a Communicable Disease Policy which covers both students and employees. Any student that has been exposed to a communicable disease or is currently exhibiting symptoms will need to report this to an instructor, advisor, department chair, or any administrator. This information will then be reported to the vice president of student services for appropriate action. Please know that student services will do everything possible to work with students to help maintain enrollment during the semester.
A few things to keep in mind: above all, don't come to class if you're sick! Additionally, follow proper health protocols and guidelines faithfully, and make an extra determined effort to be aware of any symptoms. These steps will go a tremendous way to help contain and minimize this threat.

Central Carolina Community College remains vigilant over concerns about Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) reaching North Carolina. The college will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate actions as necessary. Please refer to the college's Communicable Diseases policy located in the Policies and Procedures Manual. Know that our college programs that provide on-site services to the public are enacting appropriate procedures to protect the health of students, staff, and clients. In addition, please see specific procedures regarding response to COVID-19 concerns below. As you see in the procedures below, just as we encourage faculty to work with students whose attendance and participation may be negatively impacted by COVID-19, we also expect college leadership to work with employees whose work schedule may be negatively impacted by COVID-19. Reach out to your respective Vice President or the President's office for any needed clarification.
Procedures Regarding Impending Scheduled College Travel
All college-related travel to locations where states of emergency have been declared as well as all international travel to countries designated as a level 2 or 3 risk as assessed by the CDC is suspended, effective immediately, until further notice. The college will honor any appropriate reimbursement for non-refunded approved college-related travel expenses.
Procedures To Follow Regarding Symptomatic Individuals
If you contract Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) or begin to experience symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath:
- Report your symptoms/sickness and intentions to take sick leave to your immediate supervisor via telephone/email, prior to your usual starting time, so that your supervisor may provide coverage for your instructional or staff duties.
- (For Faculty Only): Provide your immediate supervisor with all information required to post Class Change Notifications and to provide students with Alternate Work Assignments relative to course learning objectives, where appropriate. Many of you take the initiative to notify your students of class schedule changes via Blackboard and/or email, and you are encouraged to continue this practice should you fall ill.
- Update your immediate supervisor on your progress during the subsequent leave period.
- Complete and submit a Leave Request form for approval by your supervisor on the day you return to work.
If your students contract Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) or begin to experience symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath:
- Encourage them to stay home!
- If a student shows up sick to your seated class meeting, send the student home immediately. Use your best judgment to determine whether the room should be sanitized.
- Remind afflicted students of your attendance standards and of the college’s attendance policy; however, be willing to work with them.
Procedures To Follow Regarding Possible Exposure
If you have traveled to / visited an area that is /becomes designated by local and state health departments and/or CDC as having significant community transmission and/or where a State of Emergency or level 2 or 3 risk has been declared:
- Disclose this information to your immediate supervisor via telephone/email, prior to your usual starting time, so that your supervisor may provide coverage for your instructional or staff duties.
- Enact 14-day self-quarantine off campus.
- (For Faculty Only): Provide your immediate supervisor with all information required to post Class Change Notifications and to provide students with Alternate Work Assignments relative to course learning objectives, where appropriate. As possible, arrange to meet with your class virtually via Blackboard Collaborate. Many of you take the initiative to notify your students of class schedule changes via Blackboard and/or email, and you are encouraged to continue this practice should you require self- quarantine.
- (For Staff who cannot meet college job requirements through remote working opportunities): Make-up work may be assigned by the immediate supervisor. This make- up work must meet college operation needs and should be scheduled as timely as possible. The assigned plan and documentation of the made-up work must be provided to the respective division Vice President. The Vice President will approve the plan prior to its execution and should promptly receive the documentation of made-up time.
If you learn your students have traveled to / visited an area that is /becomes designated by local and state health departments and/or CDC as having significant community transmission and/or where a State of Emergency has been declared:
- Disclose this information to your immediate supervisor.
- The student should be sent home for a 14-day self-quarantine off campus.
- Provide the student with alternate work assignments relative to course learning objectives, where appropriate.
Everyday preventive measures that should be practiced:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Clean your hands to protect you from germs.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to avoid spread of germs.
- Practice other good health habits, such as cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
