Cougar Champions of the Month
The Employee of the Month program is now Cougar Champion of the Month!
July Full-Time Cougar Champion of the Month:
Jonathan White
"Every interaction with Jonathan is positive. He is always looking out for your best interest and ensuring it aligns with the best interest of the college. He is personable and efficient. Jonathan generally cares about the college and has a calm demeanor when addressing high stakes. I am glad he is our college attorney and I hope we can keep him as long as possible."
"Jonathan is bright and efficient at working through a large number of contracts to best serve the college. What really stands out is that he excels at supporting faculty and staff in their pursuit of serving students. He understands that what he does is an essential part of a larger picture and works really hard to make sure that we are able to move within our administrative functions ethically and efficiently to keep doing the work of serving our community and students."
"When there is some issue that prevents the transaction from occurring, Jonathan always goes above and beyond in finding alternatives and getting that person to a yes. For example, he assists in finding vendors that would support the function needed."
"He really understands the full mission of the college and works to understand the entire situation outside of the contract to best support the division he is working with. This could mean a dental product, a software to schedule computer labs, or a lease for a building - whatever it is he jumps all the way in to make sure he sees the full picture. He has recently studied to take the NC Bar Exam and been successful in passing this difficult professional exam. He was admitted to practice law here in NC and is excited to use this to benefits students, the college, and our community. I am proud to call him a colleague!"
Jonathan White
Staff Attorney
How long have you worked for CCCC?
I will have been here two and a half years as of late August.
What brought you to CCCC?
After graduating law school about a decade ago, I wanted to make a difference by working in the public sector, but I was needed back home at my family’s business. After wrapping the business up a few years ago, I decided to get back to my original goals. I originally applied to work at Central Carolina as its Contract Administrator because it aligned with my desire to make a difference and my skills in law. Plus, I have always been drawn to academia.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
As Staff Attorney, I handle the processing of contracts, MOUs, and other agreements. I review documents for compliance with North Carolina laws and regulations, as well as the college’s own internal policies. Beyond contracts, I advise on legal matters, public information requests, policy revisions, and other risk-related and legal issues.
Where were you born?
I was born in Charlotte.
Where did you grow up?
Mostly around Greensboro and Myrtle Beach, SC. I also spent some time in Duluth, MN.
Where do you live now?
I live here in Sanford!
Educational credentials?
I hold two Bachelor of Art degrees, a Juris Doctor, and a Master of Business Administration.
Tell us about your family!
Almost all of my family currently live in North Carolina, spread from the Piedmont area to the coast. My father lives here with me in Sanford, while my mother, sister, and niece live together in Greenville.
What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
I have an avid interest in games of all types, including board, card, and video games, and I try to make time for physical fitness, whether it be running or working the punching bag. Intellectually, I continue to explore my interests in philosophy and religious studies.
Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why?
I have always been partial to Yoda from Star Wars as a symbol of wisdom and inner peace.
What is your favorite meal?
Honestly, I like pretty much all cuisine, but I am a fan of most Asian food, from Thai to Chinese to sushi.
Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I am happy to be here and to work with you all every day! Also, please do not sign that contract!
Part-Time CCCC Employee of the Month!
June Part-Time Cougar Champion of the Month:
Keisha Petty
"There was a time that I was waiting to speak with Keisha about a student, and she was currently on the phone with a student, which overhearing their conversation, she did amazing in having the level of patience and making sure that the student understood what needed to be done next. She provided the student with the CCCC website and how to look up the classes, and the tuition rates. She then needed to transfer the student to the Business Office, but before she did she made sure that someone on the other end picked up and then transferred. If there is a student who has been sitting for too long in the FA Lobby, she would check with the staff to see if there is anything that could be done to assist the student."
Keisha Petty
Records Receptionist & Web Advisor, Specialist.
How long have you worked for CCCC?
I have worked here for over 25 years.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
I am currently the Records Receptionist and WebAdvisor (Self Service) Specialist in Student Services on the Lee Main Campus.
Where were you born?
I was born and raised in Sanford.
Where do you live now?
I live in Sanford with my husband, Jeff.
Educational credentials?
AAS in Business Administration from CCCC.
Tell us about your family!
I am the oldest of four daughters. My youngest sibling and I are 11 years apart. My husband Jeff and I have been together for what seems like forever. Our love journey began at the age of 18 after we both graduated from Lee Senior High School. We will celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this October. We don't have any children, but we do have lots of nieces and nephews. I'm a proud auntie and they call me "Aunt KeKe."
What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I enjoy watching movies, event planning, DIY projects, crafting, volunteering at my church, and spending time with family.
What super power would you most like to have?
I'd like the ability to control time. I would slow it down because life moves way too fast.
What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal would be beef tips with rice, field peas, cabbage, and homemade biscuits. The Cheesecake Factory would be my second choice.
Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
Thank you so much for recognizing me as the Part-Time CCCC Employee of the Month. I am truly honored.

Student Onboarding & Outreach: Quick Tips for Events
Every event is different. The events we attend can differ based on where we are placed at the event, how many people attend, etc. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Don't feel like you have to pull people to you at an event. If they are interested, they'll come to you. If someone is staring from afar, I may invite them over with a "what questions do you have" statement. If they want to know something, they'll usually come over.
- Don't worry about not knowing everything. If you don't know the answer, just write down the question, capture their contact information, and let the prospective student know we'll follow up.
- Always try to capture contact information and make sure it's legible. If the information they provide isn't legible, it's of no use to us. If the prospective student isn't willing to complete the entire card, try to get at least a name, mailing address, phone number, and/or email address.
- Understand that some people won't ask you anything at an event. They'll say they are just looking. Just let them know you're there if they have any questions. Sometimes they'll ask questions and sometimes they'll just say thanks and walk off.
- A list of our CCCC programs are in the viewbook. However, sometimes the actual paper application is better to use to point out programs, since it lists the degree, diploma, and certificate options for each program.
- The viewbook also lists the steps of admission on the back page. I use that all the time when referencing what students need to do to enroll. It also has student testimonials, a service area map, and info on CCP and the Promise program.
Questions? Contact Kelvin Hunt at (919) 718-7368 or khunt@cccc.edu.

Jazz, Ragtime, & Swing Pianist Ethan Uslan www.uslanmusic.com/
Tues., Oct. 25, 2022 1 - 2 p.m.
Temple Theatre, downtown Sanford
About Ethan Uslan
Hailed by the Chicago Tribune for his "vivid musical imagination" and "deep understanding of far-flung performance practices," Ethan Uslan is a ragtime/jazz pianist and raconteur. He is a three-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest (yes - that really exists!) and has performed all over the USA, including at the Ravinia Festival, Scott Joplin Festival, and on NPR's A Prairie Home Companion. He has also performed in England, Ireland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Cyberspace, where his jazzed-up Für Elise has gone viral. He has been featured in the documentary "The Entertainers" (2012) and in 2022 he was cast as Count Lestat's piano double for the AMC series "Interview with a Vampire."
Please email me at bstumpf@cccc.edu if you'd like to reserve free seats for you and/or your students or colleagues. Then we'll move forward with the easy reservation and details needed to participate.
ACES events are wonderful fodder for classroom discussion. With the rich cultural history of jazz, ragtime, and swing, there are connections to so many academic disciplines. Even outside of the classroom context, experiencing a new genre of live music helps develop a fuller, more nuanced understanding of yourself, others, and the world.
Hope that you and/or your students/colleagues will be part of the audience for this special opportunity on Oct. 25th!

TRIO Student Support Services
TRIO SSS Visits the Biltmore Estate
On July 28th, the TRIO SSS students visited the Biltmore Estate to experience an etiquette inspired three-course lunch in the famous Stable Cafe restaurant, learned about the career exploration opportunities at the Biltmore, walked through the historical house tour, and soaked up an educational live art exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci. The students learned about how to do proper handshakes, the do’s and don'ts of texting/calling, how to operate socially when in professional settings, and the various internship and job opportunities offered at the Biltmore.
This experience was truly enjoyed by the staff and students as it was a first for some to go to the Biltmore Estate and even see the mountains for the first time.
Veterans Upward Bound
Summer of Veterans Upward Bound
Veterans Upward Bound has kept busy over the summer months. In June, we offered a biology/science study skills course to our participants as well as hosted a College Exploration Event. Though we didn’t have a big turnout for the exploration event, it made a significant difference for those who did attend.
July included a wellness workshop with a guided painting class. The portraits of jellyfish came out great! We were given a personalized tour of Fayetteville State as well.
It has been a great summer, and we are looking forward to the fall. If you would like to learn more about Veterans Upward Bound, feel free to contact us at (919) 718-7463, email veteransub@cccc.edu or visit our website.
