Retention Task Force
Earlier this year, this task force was created by Bryan Koprowski. We are currently in the stage of cementing short-term/long-term goals and working to propose them for implementation.
Statement
Our mission is to bring together faculty and staff across campus to collaborate in developing new programs and activities to increase student retention. We strive to devise methods to strengthen and improve existing programs and policies on campus with the focus on student retention. We will examine policies and procedures to increase communication effectiveness across departments, administration, and between students and faculty/staff, with an emphasis on student retention.
Objectives
- Increase the committee's recognition across campus to encourage the participation of additional faculty/ staff in creating and implementing new retention efforts.
- Engage administration with the development and implementation of programs and activities to increase student retention.
- Collectively agree upon goals and objectives created in the committee as a whole and subcommittees.
- Brainstorm creative new policies and procedures to implement and research successful retention efforts by community colleges.
Any questions? Please email Bryan Koprowski at bkopr142@cccc.edu or Nick Testa at ntest089@cccc.edu.
Dreamkeeper's Program
Removing Obstacles: Students can rest easier since the Dreamkeeper's program received a boost in the form of a $10,000 Operation Round Up grant from South River EMC. This program helps students who experience financial hurdles that could disrupt their educational progress. Pictured: Harnett County Provost Dr. Jon Matthews and CCCC Foundation Executive Director Dr. Emily Hare.
Associate Dean of University Transfer and Advising
Cristy W. Holmes, Ed.D., joins CCCC as Associate Dean of University Transfer and Advising.
Holmes comes to CCCC after having recently served as Department Head of Advising and Academic Success at Alamance Community College. She also has served at Rockingham Community College.
Holmes received her Bachelor and Master degrees from West Virginia University. She also holds an Education Specialist in Executive Leadership and a Doctorate of Education in Executive Leadership, both from Wingate University.
"I am originally from rural West Virginia. I was a first-generation college student at a large university, which I was only able to attend due to a scholarship. I majored in foreign languages to find out more about the world outside of rural West Virginia. I love to travel - when it is safe," said Holmes.
Holmes says of North Carolina community colleges: "I find these institutions serve the whole community in a way that not many other agencies can. I love working with our community college students to reach their academic, transfer, and career goals!"
I.D.E.A.L. Committee Equity Decision List
As we all try to navigate through these unprecedented times, the I.D.E.A.L. Committee would like to share a resource to help you. Whether you work with students inside or outside the classroom, we hope this Equity Decision List can help you think through your decisions with an equity and inclusion lens.
CCCC Virtual Superhero 5K
Join us for the inaugural CCCC Virtual Superhero 5K starting today, June 25, through July 25! Proceeds from the event will be used to create a Superhero Emergency fund to support our essential worker program students as they train to serve on the front lines of our community.
Participants will have a month to complete their race and submit their proof to receive a commemorative shirt. Register here: ccccsuperhero5k.eventbrite.com.
If you have any questions, contact Samantha Carroll at scarr686@cccc.edu.
Medical Sonography Volunteers
Medical Sonography is looking for volunteers to be scanned by our students. Scanned areas could include thyroid, mid abdomen, and lower abdomen. They need volunteers on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We have several time slots, so please let us know what works best for you! Contact Christy Jones at cjones@cccc.edu to get your name on the list. Thank you for your support.

Red Clay Review
Music, the universal language, is the theme of the Read Clay Review 2019. This issue "...celebrates the musicality of language and our experiences of music."
Download the 2019 issue of the Red Clay Review.
Anne Kissel and her husband have been in Chatham County for over 13 years, the longest by far either lived in any one place and both find the planting of roots a nice change. She is retired after a career working in hospice and elder service programs in several states. Taking classes in the CCCC creative writing program has provided the nudge to actually write instead of just think about writing and dare to put some of that writing out into the world.
Background Music (winner) by Anne Kissel
In my house are an organ, piano,
bongo drums, harp, maracas,
assorted flutes, ukulele and guitar,
gong, bells, and recorder.
I can’t play any of them.
Yet I hear them, part of my home’s
domestic symphony of whirrs, clicks,
buzzes, beeps and creaks of old
floors and busy new appliances.
Though lacking any musical talent,
I hear music all day, everywhere.
From dawn’s sweet soft birdsong
to grey whispery dusk, I am in music.
I am a virtuoso listener.
I sing only in the shower and
driving in the car, obviously.
I sing to my cat, because I can
and he knows less of music than I.
I fall asleep to my sweetheart’s
night song of gentle snores and feet
seeking the cool spot under the covers.
I dream of ancient war harps and Mozart.
I hear the sun.
Was the first music I heard mother’s heartbeat,
the slippery susurrus of her blood pushing mine?
Rhythm before speech, listening before breathing;
too soon words drive out the melodies born deep within us.
Music still flows in my blood.
Are we hardwired, fine tuned before birth
at a sub-cellular level to respond to music?
We don’t need music to eat or run or farm, but
surely we need cellos and sopranos to fully live.
Perhaps when we die we become a unique
order of sounds that tells the stories of our lives,
a musical bar code by which we will know each other.
Perhaps what survives are our tonal vibrations, joining
others, rippling down the stars, a timeless celestial chorus.
Perhaps we are music.
PERSONNEL NOTES
Thank You
Friends,
Thank you for the many kind expressions of sympathy upon the recent death of my father. We appreciated the many cards, flowers, plants, messages, calls, texts, and especially prayers. Your kindness brought us much comfort at a very difficult time. I'm very grateful to be a part of the CCCC family.

COUGAR PETS
Cougar Pets News
Cougar Pets are proceeding with adoptions for all of our animals who are already spayed/neutered. If the animal hasn't been spayed and neutered, then we notify the applicant that we will hold them until PPE resources become more readily available, and we can get the animal into surgery or we can suggest alternative pets that may have similar qualities for what they are looking for.
We are not able to host any meet-and-greets right now, so we are doing adoption trials in home with pets that we think might be compatible. If they aren't a good fit for the household, then we can pick them up.
Meet Lois
My name is Lois. I am a 4-year-old female that would love to come home with you! I am a shy and curious girl, but once I get to know you I am very sweet! I enjoy playing the game "hide-and-seek" where I hide and you come find me. I also like being fed treats, too. I would do best in a home where I can be the center of attention! I cannot wait to find my furever best friend to play hide-and-seek with!
Lois is currently available for adoption!
Meet Snickers
My name is Snickers. I am a 3-year-old male that is looking for my special someone! I absolutely love to lay in laps and get fed treats. Those are two activities I can do all day long! I am a little bit nervous at first, but I will warm up to you with some time (and treats). I would do best in an only dog household and with adults/older children. I cannot wait to find my furever home!
Snickers is currently available for adoption!
All adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have had regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact us at www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
