CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Employee of the Month: Billy Freeman
In addition to his excellent work as an instructor and Dept. Chair, Billy Freeman does a great deal of work, behind the scenes, on behalf of CCCC. He keeps the college radio stations up and running. That means if the station goes out at 2 a.m. on a Thursday or Saturday morning, Bill literally answers the call and often comes in to fix things. Bill handles the audio for many college events, like the recent convocation and our graduations and PD Day. Bill also works selflessly with our partners, like the county schools and civic center to make their audio the best it can be. He literally makes the college sound better.
We often justly reward those employees whose accomplishments put them on center stage, in front of the mic. This month, I'd like to recognize someone who, although they often work in the background, is no less critical to our college's success.
Billy Freeman
Director of Media Relations, Department Chair, Media TechnologiesHow long have you worked for CCCC?
I started in a department known as Audio Visuals and worked there for four years before making the transition to instructor in Broadcasting.
What brought you to CCCC?
After a number of years working crazy hours, weekends, and holidays in radio, I was burned out and looking for a "regular" job that would support my love for audio, radio, technology, and music, in addition to supporting my family.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
As Director of Media, I teach classes, program WDCC 90.5FM, oversee WUAW 88.3FM, 4CNC-TV, Lee County Government Cable TV, Broadcasting Production Technology, Library Information Technology...as well as create a musical soundtrack for Carl Bryan to host Professional Development Day.
Where were you born?
Sanford...I am an actual native for over three generations.
Where did you grow up?
Sanford.
Educational credentials?
BFA, UNCG
Where do you live now?
Still, Sanford.
Tell us about your family!
I have a wife and one son. My wonderful, intelligent, patient spouse has endured me for over 33 years and our talented son took up many of my bad habits. He is a musician in Nashville and will be leaving on a three-month national tour in mid-January performing with Lainey Wilson, special guest for Justin Moore and Tracy Lawrence.
What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
While in commercial radio in the '80s, I started a DJ business and sound production company. This is a passion I continue as DJ for weddings, dances and corporate events, as well as providing sound production for bands and musical acts around the state.
What superhero power would you most like to have?
Cloning a (much) younger self.
Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
I admire Hugh Jackman...not that I am anything like him! Steve Carell might be a better fit.
What is your favorite meal?
Anything from a James Beard award-winning chef.
WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Upward Bound Fall Semester
Upward Bound has had an exciting semester! We had a Saturday session on Oct. 19 where our students had the opportunity to hear Mrs. Ja'net Adams, our guest speaker. On Oct. 26, we took a group of students to Raleigh to Camp Smile, an interactive STEM camp. Our last trip of the semester was to the UNC Pre-College Expo. Our November Saturday session was so much fun thanks to Candice and Kevin!
Ja'net Adams spoke to our students about ways to help them stay out of debt before they have the chance to bury themselves in debt! She also provided realistic goals of where each student should be according to grade level, which helped encourage them to move in the right direction. She provided helpful links for scholarships. She provided insight on the possibilities our students have to assist them throughout college and life utilizing their own skills.
Camp Smile STEM Camp was a lot of fun! We were divided into three groups and each group performed seven hands-on experiments. They offered a variety of Science disciplines for our students. Our students were able to experience the Briggs-Rauscher process (wow factor), turned pennies into gold (yes!), experimented with Einstein's Theory of Relativity (space is amazing), Lichtenberg Figures (really neat), flame tests (rainbow of colors), watch thermodynamics, combustion, and molar relationships (whoosh bottle!), and made ice cream using liquid nitrogen! It was full day filled with exciting STEM experiments!
Upward Bound took a group of students to the UNC Pre-College Expo on Nov. 9. The students attended multiple workshops where they were able to learn additional preparation tips for college. The students also enjoy a campus tour of UNC-Chapel Hill. It was a pleasant day and the students took some good tips with them!
Our November Saturday Session was a blast thanks to CCCC Student Success Coaches Candice Solis and Kevin Pearson (who happens to be a UB Alum). They presented on time management, organization techniques and goal setting in academics through interactive activities. The Upward Bound family appreciated the coaches taking the time out, on a Saturday, to share their knowledge and expertise with us.

"In The Cathedral" by B.R. Strahan
Organ and choir
spread a sky of sound.
Stone flowers bloom.
Marble ivies the pillared nave.
In dim reaches
carved eyes watch,
chiseled ears listen.
From capstone and cornice
stone faces leer
at the cacophony of praise
disturbing their sleep.
Voices implore ivory saints,
the Jesus carved
in his perfect agony.
Marble leaves vibrate
but there’s no response
from half open lips
stone syllables frozen there.

Meet Theo
My name is Theo. I am a 5-year-old male that would love to come home with you! I am a very sweet boy and laid back. I prefer snuggling and pets rather than playing. I would love to find a home that is quiet and enjoys cuddling as much as I do! Theo is available for adoption!
Meet Georgia
My name is Georgia. I am a sweet 4-year-old female that is looking for a human that will give me all the snuggles! I am very shy, but love to play once I get used to you! I absolutely love playing with my dog friends. They help me come out of my shell. I cannot wait to find my furever home! Georgia is currently available for adoption!
All adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have had regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact us at www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
