CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Employee of the Month: David Haire
David Haire recently took on the network administrator role, but continues to assist employees with issues even if it's outside of his network role. He is always willing to help and never makes you feel like you are bothering him. He will come to where you are, chat you on your computer, and will follow up to make sure issues are resolved. He is pleasant to work with and I think remains under the radar, not getting the recognition he deserves.

Math Club Takes 2nd Place
The CCCC Math Club took second place at the 2019 NCMATYC Math Competition on Nov. 9. The math competition is always a favorite Math Club event. I am proud of our students for representing the club and the college.
Over 100 students competed from 15 community colleges across the state. Students compete individually in the morning calculus exam; Mackenzie Roche placed third of all competing students in the morning calculus competition. In the afternoon team competition, CCCC Lee placed fourth out of 31 teams. Overall, CCCC Lee won second place.

Durham Bulls Athletic Park
The Health and Fitness Science students were provided a behind the scenes tour at the Durham Athletic Park which is home to the Durham Bulls as well as Duke Baseball. Faith Inman, Promotions Director for the Durham Bulls, provided access to all aspects of the stadium as well as provided information on Special Event promotions, Game Day management, and all things Minor League Baseball.
Faith recounted a story where the director of Bull Durham, Ron Shelton, attended the stadium last year and was surprised to see the Bull in left field. As Faith recounted "The bull in left field was a tradition that was started in the Bull Durham movie and was originated when Director Ron Shelton saw a promotion by a clothing store where employees hit a celebratory button when a suit was sold. Shelton and his crew dreamed up a way to make it relevant to the storyline of Bull Durham and now the "Hit the Bull, Get a Steak" is part of Durham Bulls history"
Association of Community College Safety and Security Officials
Safety and Security personnel from throughout the NC Community College System founded the Association of Community College Safety and Security Officials, ACCSSO, at the EHSI Safety Leadership conference last April. The first official meeting on Sept. 17 was held at Central Carolina Community College where we selected an interim executive board and drafted our Constitution, appropriately, on Constitution Day. Visit EHSI to learn more.
Fit For Spring - Personal Training Clients
Spring 2020 is approaching and the Health and Fitness Science First Year students will be providing Personal Training sessions twice a week to volunteers. This includes pre-testing, fashioning SMART goals for your own fitness endeavors, and post-testing. This will start February 3 and run until the end of the Spring 2020 semester. The commercial value of this endeavor is over $1000, but as a volunteer, you get it for free.
The Personal Training Class will run on TTH from 9:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., however, the sessions will run only one hour.
We have twenty-five trainers who need the hours and in some cases, they can adjust their class schedules to meet their clients' job hour requirements. They cannot get their personal training in AFTER the work day nor on their own on weekends or at your personal gym. It has to be done here at the Lee Campus.
If you are interested in the Spring of 2020 having a personal trainer, please email Dr. Carl Bryan at cbryan@cccc.edu so he can add you to the list of clients.

Helping Lee County Children During Holidays
It is my privilege each year to coordinate getting interested CCCC employees connected to the Christmas JOY Program in Lee County. This program is an opportunity to make the holidays special and memorable for deserving children in our community, and CCCC has been participating at least my fifteen year tenure (and probably even longer). Interested individuals and groups agree to sponsor a child (an "angel") by purchasing things like clothing, coats, and toys. Children range in age from birth to twelve.
I have angels ready for adoption. Last year CCCC adopted thirty-nine angels! Some departments, buildings, and peer groups at the College pool their resources to adopt an angel in lieu of gift exchanges on campus. Some individuals at CCCC wish to support an angel but don't want to do the shopping. In these cases, I can do as I have in the past and do the shopping for you with your monetary contribution.
As a child with little resources, I received my holiday gifts through this program thirty years ago, and my heart holds a special place for it. Participation is a remarkable way to embody a spirit of service. If you or a CCCC group of you are interested, please call me at (919) 498-5452 or e-mail bstum056@cccc.edu.
Gifts will be due to First Presbyterian Church on Hawkins Ave. in early Dec. You can drop them off there, or I can arrange for a pick-up and drop-off for you. Details on drop-off will accompany your angel materials.
Thanks so much for considering and/or sharing with anyone you think would be interested.

Upcoming Lee Library Events
A Walk Through History: Lee Library 50th Anniversary (Save the date!) The Library building on the Lee Campus opened its doors to students in January 1970. That's right, the Library is turning 50 years old in 2020!
While card catalogs and microfilm may have been replaced by digital databases, our mission to serve the students of Central Carolina Community College hasn't changed. We have been helping students conduct research and access information since they came to us wearing bell-bottoms, and we want to celebrate that history.
In honor of our 50th Anniversary, we will be hosting a "Walk Through History" event during the week of Jan. 21 - 24, 2020. Come see a photo display of the early days of CCCC and find stories from the dedicated professionals who staffed the original library. If you or someone you know worked in the library or at CCCC in the early '70s, we'd love to hear your stories and include them in the display. We will also hold a reception on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020, from 2 - 3:30 p.m. So mark your calendars and come celebrate with us!
Upcoming Harnett Library Events
Cookbook Display & Treats: The Harnett Library will be showcasing our cookbooks this month in anticipation of the upcoming holidays. On Monday, Nov. 25th, library staff will be making dishes for patrons to sample. These dishes will be from The Wizard's Cookbook. Samples will be available as long as they last, so we encourage patrons to come early to give them a try! We would love anyone who uses one of our cookbooks in the coming months to share a photo of what they made on our Library Facebook page!
Exam Study Party: On Wednesday Dec. 4th, the Harnett Library will be hosting our second Exam Study Party in the Library computer lab. There will be spaces reserved for students to use for studying and working with STEM tutors. The Librarian will be available to assist with questions. We will have pizza, snacks, and drinks available as well. The study party will begin at Noon. RSVP will be required so that we know how much food to provide. A link to the RSVP form will be sent via email, Facebook, and to course instructors soon.

Shout Outs
Kevin Coleman Featured
HCI Welding Instructor Kevin Coleman was recently featured in the "Educator Spotlight" section of the Spring 2019 edition of ARC Magazine, a welding industry periodical published by Lincoln Electric Company. The feature story was prompted by a letter signed by 19 of Coleman's HCI students and sent to the magazine's editors. An excerpt from the letter that was quoted in the feature article reads, "More than just helping build friendships and vocational skills in a shop or working environment, he's teaching us a life-changing, perhaps even a life-saving skill set."
Congratulations to Kevin for this unique and well-deserved recognition of his learning-first focus.
David Watson Completes Doctoral
David Watson, English and Humanities instructor, has successfully completed his doctoral work at UNCG and has earned a Ph.D. in English with a Specialization in American Literature after 1900.
