Harnett Commissioners Appoint Bill Tyson as Tax Administrator

The Harnett County Board of Commissioners has appointed former Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) Harnett County Provost Bill Tyson as the County’s new Tax Administrator. Commissioners approved a two-year appointment and Tyson was sworn in as Tax Administrator during the Board’s Sept. 3 meeting.

Harnett County Manager Paula Stewart said she was excited to welcome Tyson to the Harnett County team.

“Bill brings a wealth of knowledge and a high level of professionalism to the county, and I am looking forward to working with him in this role,” said Stewart.

One of Tyson’s top priorities as Tax Administrator will be overseeing Harnett County’s 2022 property reappraisal. The county has hired Vincent Valuations to conduct a full remeasure and reappraisal of the county, which has not been done since 2003. The process is already under way with staff from Vincent Valuations currently assessing properties across the County.

Tyson said he is looking forward to his new role in Harnett County.

“I appreciate the vote of confidence shown by the Board of Commissioners and the County Manager in my recent appointment as Tax Administrator for Harnett County,” he said. “I look forward to serving the citizens of Harnett County along with the dedicated and hardworking staff in the Tax Office.”

Tyson has more than 25 years of experience in administration and management, most recently as Harnett County Provost for CCCC. He has also been an Associate Dean, Director, Coordinator, and Instructor during his 34-year career. His management style focuses on continuous improvement, effective communication within and across departments, and excellent customer service.

Tyson has a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from East Carolina University, with further study at North Carolina State University. He resides in Angier and is a member of the Lillington Presbyterian Church.

I.D.E.A.L. - Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity Advocates Learning

The CCCC Student Equity Committee and Diversity Committee have partnered to create a team dedicated to diversity & equity education and advocacy. This group is actively working to:

  1. identify aspects of the current college culture and climate that may present barriers to inclusion for students, staff, and faculty,
  2. provide educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of marginalized populations in our community, and
  3. to strengthen and promote college practices that nurture inclusivity and equity.

Our dedicated group is currently creating an action plan on how to best offer training opportunities for staff, faculty, and students for Fall 2019. If this is something you might be interested in, please contact either Jairo McMican at jmcmi643@cccc.edu or Nora Burmeister at nburm777@cccc.edu. Healthcare Simulation Week

The week of Sept. 16-20 is Healthcare Simulation Week. As part of the activities in the simulation lab at CCCC, the second-year nursing students were able to participate in an exciting opportunity. Instructor Jamie Ferguson was working on her Evidence-based Innovation Project for her MSN through UNC Wilmington and incorporated that project into the simulation for the students. She worked with Dixie Holden, the Simulation Coordinator at CCCC, to prepare a simulation activity related to patient safety, communication, and teamwork.

Students worked to develop skills necessary to be partners in a healthcare team. Mrs. Ferguson incorporated the simulation into an Escape Room where students cared for the patient and in the process of that care would find clues to "escape" the room. Students had to work together to discover the clues, puzzles, and riddles to identify patient safety concerns. The feedback received from the students and observers was great! Everyone had fun and the students were able to meet their learning objectives using an innovative gamification of simulation experience.

QEP Corner: My Academic Pathway

Help OUR students with new MAP Resources!

The MAP Marketing Team created a My Success Checklist and Students Services guides to help students in their first semester! These great resources are now available on the CCCC Advising website under Current Students. Feel free to use them in your advising appointments or print copies of them for your department!

MAP Refuel Event is a Success! by Summerlin Webb

During the second week of classes, students were treated to mochas and delicious shortbread cookies at our MAP Refuel events on the Lee, Harnett, and Chatham campuses. In addition to the caffeine and tasty treats provided by Chef Hamm and the Culinary Department, students were given a map of their campus with a list of student resources and their hours and contact information along with a GPS. The GPS is a checklist for students to follow in each semester to ensure they stay on their pathways and complete tasks necessary for a good academic journey (visiting their advisor, registering on time, completing the FAFSA, submitting their graduation application, etc.).

MAP’s Blue Man was also present for the Lee Campus event, pictured here with Amanda Carter and Maryann Aucompaugh.

Emma Belcher gives documents to a student while CCCC Ambassador Gabriella Cuellar manages cookie distribution.

Michelle Powell and /b>Amy Gustavson
at the Chatham Main Campus Refuel event.

Students were excited to receive the treats and handouts. As one student said at the Lee Campus event, "This is the best day ever. A Monday, and I get mocha and cookies?!"

These events were a great way to get MAP, resources, and advising in the forefront of students’ minds soon after the semester start. Many thanks to Scott Byington, Amy Gustavson, Seth Buchanan, Constance Boahn, Maryann Aucompaugh, Nick Testa, Chef Hamm, Morgan Steele, Marcie Dishman, Michelle Powell, Emma Belcher, Shelly Watkins, CCCC Ambassadors Gabriella Cuellar and Kim Taylor, CCCC Culinary Students, and the Business Services Department for all their hard work to make this event happen.

The purpose of My Academic Pathway (MAP) is to provide a personalized approach that enables new students to make efficient, effective, and timely choices in order to complete their educational and career goals. Admissions, Advising, and ACA courses are the three essential M.A.P. elements that support each student’s pathway to academic and career success.
