CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Employee of the Month: David Myers

Employee of the Month

Dave Myers has been critical to getting our new ACHR program off the ground. He has helped with materials, books, equipment, and classroom/lab design, on top of his full time duties as a welding instructor. Without Dave, we wouldn't have an ACHR program.

On top of that work, Dave does a great job with our welding and industrial systems students, getting them ready for their careers in industry. Dave always has a good word for everyone and couldn't be a nicer fellow. CCCC is lucky to have him as part of our faculty team.

Where were you born?
Rochester, N.Y.

Where did you grow up?
Rochester, N.Y., until college, which upon graduation to other areas and eventually to Sanford.

4H'ers Receive Grant

The Central Electric Member Care Trust, powered by voluntary donations from Central Electric members, awarded Lee County 4H a grant in the amount of $290. The grant was used to purchase soldering irons, solder, and a desoldering bulb for participants in the Summer STEAM 4H Camp, Electric Project.

In August, CCCC instructor Sandra Castonguay taught 4H'ers about circuitry in her campus classroom. Camp participants learned about resistors, how to solder, how to desolder, and ultimately how to complete the kit, making a laser target. 4H Electric Project supplied electronic project kits for use in the camp.

Participants were rising 7th graders to high school and they now have soldering irons of their own to further explore the world of circuitry. As he was leaving camp, one member was heard saying, "I am going to college here."

I.D.E.A.L. - Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity Advocates Learning

The CCCC Student Equity Committee and Diversity Committee have partnered to create a team dedicated to diversity & equity education and advocacy. This group is actively working to:

  1. identify aspects of the current college culture and climate that may present barriers to inclusion for students, staff, and faculty,
  2. provide educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of marginalized populations in our community, and
  3. to strengthen and promote college practices that nurture inclusivity and equity.

Our dedicated group is currently creating an action plan on how to best offer training opportunities for staff, faculty, and students for Fall 2019. If this is something you might be interested in, please contact either Jairo McMican at jmcmi643@cccc.edu or Nora Burmeister at nburm777@cccc.edu. With your assistance, we will make CCCC the IDEAL place to be.

Free Creative Writing Workshops

One of my favorite parts of my work at CCCC is coordinating the Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series (ACES) that brings arts enrichment to our students and to the wider community. I'm excited ACES is branching into all three of our service area counties this October.

Thanks to National Endowment for the Arts grant funding, we are hosting free creative writing workshops in October in Sanford, Lillington, and Pittsboro. All are invited!

Anyone interested in reserving a seat (any county or date convenient to the participant) just needs to reach out to me to claim this opportunity.

Please let me know if you have any questions or wish for me to respond or come share more details about ACES, the NEA grant, and/or the writing workshops. Bianka Rhodes Stumpf at bstum056@cccc.edu.

VUB Donut Tuesdays

VUB starts the semester with the return of Donut Tuesdays. These are held Tuesday mornings from 8 - 10 a.m. in Hockaday Hall Room 122 (student lounge area). Donuts and coffee will be served. We encourage all of our local participants to stop in and would like to have some faculty and staff show up to mingle. This past week's event had seven participants and three staff show up.

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a program funded through the Department of Education. VUB is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in higher education. The program provides enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.

Guest Speaker Wanted

Any faculty or staff who are interested in being contacted to be a guest speaker or to sit on a career panel?

The NC Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) Navigator program is a work-based learning program where local businesses and organizations can sign up to be called upon by the local school system for things such as guest speakers, career fairs, internships or apprenticeships, etc.

Local schools systems are looking to grow the number of resources that our teachers can call upon if a need arises for any of the items mentioned above. Any faculty or staff who are interested in being contacted about their field of work can do so by visiting wblnavigator.org/web.
