CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Employee of the Month: Danny Furr

Employee of the Month

In the first weekend of June, Danny Furr came to the college off hours on both weekend days to address maintenance issues. On Saturday at the Innovation Center, a weekend class was scheduled. Danny came in to address air conditioning issues to ensure student comfort for the class. Then, the following early Sunday morning, Danny came to the Civic Center to investigate a power outage issue. Upon that investigation he initiated contact with Progress/Duke Energy of a power supply problem and stayed on site until Progress/Duke energy rectified the situation. He then continued on site until all systems rebooted to make sure no equipment damage or power surge damage had taken place.

Danny was gracious and patient with his time. For the Saturday, a small class of six, and Sunday, for an event for over 1,000, he showed no matter how big or small a class or event. He helped to ensure while on our campus and in our buildings there was comfort and functionality.

We often take basic utilities and their need for granted, water, power, heat, air conditioning, but these are essential functions to make and keep our college campus running and one step above the rest.

Danny went above and beyond to ensure CCCC maintains its buildings properly and ensure that our students, faculty, staff, and guests are comfortable.

Harnett County DSS and Partnership for Children

Pictured are some of the CCCC Dunn Center senior citizens who visit the center and/or who helped make pillows, scarves, hats, blankets, and duffle bags for a project to provide items for children who are entering foster care.

The seniors' grandchildren donated stuffed animals and the senior line dancing group donated toiletries to place in the duffle bags. Crystal Smith, from CCCC, donated a roll of denim fabric for the duffle bag project.

Harnett County DSS and Partnership for Children provide kids who are entering foster care many necessities that these kids are missing when they arrive at DSS. "Most children who are entering foster care leave their homes with nothing, so this project was very successful and we hope to continue and ongoing partnership to provide for this need in our community," said CCCC Senior Activities Director Gwendolyn Collins.

Present to accept the items were Director of Harnett County Partnership for Children, Tara Fish, and from the Harnett County Department of Social Services, Thakida McDougald and Kimberly Kowanick.

Others present were Dorothy Hammonds, Voneta Page, Joyce Parker, Martha Maynard, Amelia Patterson, Maxine Dennis, Mollie Bulla, Mary Campbell, and Senior Activities Director Gwendolyn Collins.

I.D.E.A.L. - Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity Advocates Learning

The CCCC Student Equity Committee and Diversity Committee have partnered to create a team dedicated to diversity & equity education and advocacy. This group is actively working to:

  1. identify aspects of the current college culture and climate that may present barriers to inclusion for students, staff, and faculty,
  2. provide educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of marginalized populations in our community, and
  3. to strengthen and promote college practices that nurture inclusivity and equity.

Our dedicated group is currently creating an action plan on how to best offer training opportunities for staff, faculty, and students for Fall 2019. If this is something you might be interested in, please contact either Jairo McMican at jmcmi643@cccc.edu or Nora Burmeister at nburm777@cccc.edu. With your assistance, we will make CCCC the IDEAL place to be.

Student Success Questionnaire

A committee of faculty and staff from across the college have been working over the the past several months to create a "Student Success Questionnaire" for all incoming new students. This sub-committee of the NC GPS team is striving to identify obstacles impacting our students and assist in resolving them early on in their educational journey. Beginning in July 2019, new CCCC students will be asked to complete a "Student Success Questionnaire" as a part of the admissions and on-boarding process.

The questionnaire will gauge needs of students in areas such as: food insecurity, transportation, physical and mental health needs, financial needs, child care, housing, domestic violence, sexual assault, technology, and more. The questionnaire is linked from the students CCCC Portal landing page. Once a student completes the survey, a Success Coach or other staff or faculty trained to respond will reach out to students to connect them to needed resources and services.

Many colleges around the country are beginning to implement intake surveys or success questionnaires such as this. We believe that by proactively connecting students to services and resources as soon as we are aware of the need, we will see long-term student success and retention increase.

If you have any questions about this new questionnaire, don't hesitate to reach out to Adam Wade at awade@cccc.edu.

STEP-UP Student Scholars

On June 27-30, 2019, CCCC's TRiO Student Support Services, Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences, and STEP-UP Student Scholars programs collaborated to bring a group of students to the 25th Annual SAEOPP SSS McNair Scholars Research Conference at the Marriott Marquis hotel in downtown Atlanta, Ga. The conference provides opportunities for young scholars to share their research, provides exposure to the key issues in research and higher education, facilitates the interaction between graduate school representatives, graduate faculty, and scholars, and provides forums for discussion of intellectual issues.

During the conference, our scholars had the opportunity to learn about the graduate school admissions process, resources for graduate school funding, attend oral and poster research presentations, and meet with university representatives from across the nation at a graduate school fair. Throughout the conference, they were able to network and learn from other undergraduate scholars from across the United States.

In addition to the conference events, students were able to take in some of the culturally significant offerings of vibrant downtown Atlanta. These included a visit to Centennial Olympic Park, touring the Georgia Aquarium, and dinner at the famous Mary Mac's Tearoom.

Nancy Almanza-Quiroz, A.S. Class of 2019, summarized her experience by saying:

"I learned how to present research and that there's a lot out there to do with research. I also found out that there is financial aid for students who want to continue their education by going to grad school. Something that I will never forget from attending this conference was that as a student who goes to grad school, I can make a change in society and along with that I can make a positive difference. I will apply the things that I learned into my daily routine to make change and attend college to become someone successful. I also would like to help minorities attend college by telling them that there is aid to help them go to college and promote McNair Scholars program."

TRiO Student Support Services & Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two Department of Education funded grant programs that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability. If you know of a student that could benefit from our program's services, please refer them by e-mailing sss@cccc.edu or calling (919) 718-7567.

The STEP-UP program at CCCC is a National Science Foundation funded scholarship program (Grant Number: 1564690) for students who have demonstrated financial need and are interested in completing associate degrees (A.S., A.E, or A.A.S) in a field of science, math, or engineering. For more information about this program, please contact Dr. Rodney Powell at rpowe757@cccc.edu or (919) 718-7462.

Placement Testing Updates and Reminders

With the implementation of the new RISE placement model, we wanted to make sure that faculty and staff are reminded of our placement testing policies.

The new policy for placement testing states that only the following students will be eligible to test:

  • Those who have been out of high school over 10 years.
  • International high school graduates.
  • Students that have earned a GED without acceptable scores.

In addition to this, students who have placement scores on file with CCCC and are dated within 10 years will not be eligible to test. For example, Johnny has NCDAP scores on file from 2016. He cannot test using RISE to get better scores. He must be placed in English and Math based on his 2016 scores that are on file.

Finally, students who are eligible to take RISE are only allowed to take the assessment a total of two times.

Testing can be scheduled by calling:

  • Chatham - (919) 545-8029
  • Harnett - (910) 814-8863
  • Lee - (919) 718-7300

If you or your students have any questions, please contact Mary Brown, Student Support and Assessment Specialist, at (919) 718-7471.

Admissions, Advising, and ACA courses are the three essential M.A.P. elements that support each student’s pathway to academic and career success.
