CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
January Employee of the Month: Amanda Carter
Since moving into the library, I have seen first-hand the work Amanda Carter does, not only to keep Blackboard up and running, but to help every student who comes in looking for help with their accounts. She remains calm and welcoming despite the stresses she deals with every day, and takes time to make sure every person she works with feels supported. She has gone out of her way to collaborate and come up with new and innovative solutions to problems.
Amanda Carter
Director of Distance EducationHow long have you worked for CCCC?
I began working part-time at CCCC in 2000. I have been full-time since September 2004.
What brought you to CCCC?
I went to Appalachian State University for a year and decided to change my major. I decided to attend CCCC as a student to prepare for transfer to another university. I was first hired to work part-time as a tutor and lab assistant in the Academic Assistance Center in 2000. Some amazing mentors and colleagues, including C.K. Caldwell, Nancy Turner, Dr. Joyner, Dr. Garrett, Dr. Chapman, Dr. Slade, Celia Hurley, Bianka Stumpf and many others, helped me see that I could make education a career. I love the people and atmosphere at CCCC. We are a big, supportive family.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
I keep Distance Education and Blackboard up and running with the help of my coordinator, Kasey Patterson. This includes researching, training, troubleshooting, and making sure our college is following local, state, and federal guidelines for distance education. I oversee our Blackboard upgrades and troubleshoot technology implementations such as Turnitin, Respondus, and Bb Collaborate. I most enjoy bringing in new and emerging technologies to help support faculty, staff, and students. I love helping to improve the educational experience at CCCC.
Where were you born?
Sanford.
Where did you grow up?
Sanford.
Educational credentials?
Graduated from Lee Senior in 1999. Graduated from CCCC in 2003 with Associate in Arts and Associate in Applied Science in Internet Technologies. Graduated from East Carolina University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education and in 2009 with a Master of Science in Vocational Education with a concentration in Information Technology. I just completed my Website Developer Certificate from East Carolina in December.
Where do you live now?
Sanford.
Tell us about your family!
My dad is a retired guidance counselor with Lee County Schools and my mom is retired after finishing her career at CCCC about 10 years ago. Education runs in the family!
What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I am a member of the Sanford Brush & Palette Club. In addition to art, I enjoy reading, shopping, and spending time with my friends and family. I enjoy watching sports. Especially hockey, so I can be found cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes during the hockey season!
What superhero power would you most like to have?
A time turner that Hermione used in Harry Potter.
Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I want to thank everyone for being awesome and for helping to make CCCC a great place to work!
WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

CCCC Faculty Receives Teaching Award!
We are thrilled to inform you that our colleague, Ginger Harris, has been selected for the 2019 North Carolina Community College System Excellence in Teaching Award! View the full NCCCS press release.
Back in the fall, she was selected as a Top 6 finalist, participated in a series of interviews with NCCCS staff, made the Top 3, and then interviewed again with members of the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges. And, she won!
This honor is so very well deserved, Ginger! Congratulations!
TSWDB Award Banquet
The 7th Annual Triangle South Workforce Development Board (TSWDB) Awards Banquet was held Dec. 5 at the Harnett Health Sciences Center in Lillington.
Many awards were presented, including to our own Angela Nicholson for Team Member of the Year.
Rosalind Cross, TSWDB Director, was Master of Ceremonies. Welcome/Acknowledgements were by Russell Hieb, TSWDB Chair, and Dr. Marcie Dishman, CCCC Associate Vice President of Marketing and External Relations. Christmas Melodies were presented by Kim Shaw, TSWDB Adult Services Coordinator.
The Triangle South Workforce Development Board (TSWDB) is responsible for planning, policy guidance, and oversight of the workforce investment system in Chatham, Harnett, Lee, and Sampson Counties. Its goal is to combine area employment, training, and supportive services and programs into a consumer-based, market-driven system that meets the needs of job seekers and employers.
Equity Activity Results from PD Day, and Request for Input
THANK YOU to all who participated in the activities on Professional Development Day to provide input to our 2020 Strategic Plan. Here's a representation of all the words used in your responses on the Equity poster activity, to describe how we can make marginalized students feel more welcome:See the full results for each of the eight student profiles.
The spaghetti-marshmallow CCCC models were stunning! Instead of illustrating how different students come to the table with different talents/abilities/baggage (as different groups were given very different supplies), it brilliantly illustrated how the nimble and creative faculty and staff at CCCC pour their hearts into making the most with whatever resources they are provided!
TOGETHER we embody this institution and TOGETHER we will craft the way forward. Thank you for your input! Please contact us with any questions.
Yours in service to students and community,

Open Educational Resources at CCCC
On Jan. 3, the Center for Academic Excellence hosted the first ever OER Bootcamp and it was attended by over 50 CCCC faculty. Use of OER (Open Educational Resources) is a growing international trend as the cost of textbooks and course materials has far outpaced inflation.
The number of students who chose to attempt courses without purchasing books is staggering. Many institutions are choosing OER options as an attempt to remediate this trend. CCCC supports the use of OER and is encouraging faculty to consider low or no cost options for their courses. A keynote speech was presented remotely by Una Daly, director of CCCOER (Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources), of which CCCC is one of two North Carolina members. A panel of OER users from CCCC, Wake Technical Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, and Mitchell Community College answered questions about why and how they use OER in their own courses.
The final presentation was from Tara Lucas and NC Live, who demonstrated available resources as well as answered questions concerning grants available to faculty who adopt OER in their course. The Center for Academic Excellence is ready to help all faculty who want to implement OER in their course.
Please contact Dr. Rodney Powell with general OER questions, or if you want to discuss course design, contact Lisa Knight, Instructional Designer. Tara Lucas and the librarians can help you with the OER faculty toolbox.
BREAKING NEWS: Sandra Bowen and Rhyme Song have been awarded a grant from NC Live to use OER in their Public Speaking course! Lisa Knight has received a grant for Physics 110 and the 151/152 sequence!
Mandatory Employee Title IX Training

This training is due for completion by May 31, 2019.

Through background information on his youth, along with the important contributions of Memphians such as Dewey and Sam Phillips, North Carolina Humanities Council Road Scholar Billy Stevens puts the social and historic context of Elvis' remarkable success into perspective. TRiO Student Support Services Attends The Hip Hop Nutcracker
On Dec. 20, TRiO Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences participants visited the Durham Performing Arts Center to see a performance of the Hip Hop Nutcracker.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker re-imagines Tchaikovsky's original Nutcracker score by remixing it with hip hop choreography. The performers include 12 dancers, a DJ, a live violinist, and is hosted by legendary hip hop artist Kurtis Blow as the MC. The updated story takes place in modern New York City on New Year's Eve, and infuses contemporary culture into Tchaikovsky's classic masterpiece.
Before the performance, students had dinner at Cuban Revolution in Durham's American Tobacco Historic District and enjoyed classic Caribbean food. They then headed across the street to the DPAC for the show. It was all of the students' first visit to the DPAC and, for most, their first experience with the Nutcracker, too!
All of the students had an amazing experience, with one student saying on TRiO SSS's Facebook page, "Thank you TRiO for a wonderful evening out! That was a great way to end a semester!"
TRiO Student Support Services & Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two Department of Education funded grant programs that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability. If you know of a student that could benefit from our program's services, please refer them by e-mailing sss@cccc.edu or calling (919) 718-7567.
