IN THIS ISSUE:

CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Congratulations May Employee of the Month: Emily Barrick

May Employee of the Month

Emily Barrick is a full-time faculty and the clinical coordinator for the HIT department. She has worked at CCCC since August of 2016 coming straight from industry with no teaching experience. She has grown into an amazing online instructor with overwhelmingly positive student satisfaction feedback in her end of course surveys.

As the clinical coordinator, she has the challenge of assisting the HIT students find clinical sites for them to obtain their clinical hours. This task can be overwhelming at times with students in three cohorts needing placements in two semesters each, but Emily takes it all in stride and keeps persisting until each student has a clinical placement.

As an instructor, she goes above and beyond to assist her students in any way possible, from supportive feedback on every written assignment to encouraging them when they are feeling frustrated and discouraged. She has been instrumental in getting the HIT students involved in both NCHIMA, North Carolina's Health Information Management Association, and the Sanford chapter of AAPC, the American Academy of Professional Coders. Emily is always willing to try new things in her courses to engage students and is always looking for the newest technology to enhance online learning. Her creative problem solving and work ethic has made her a huge asset to the HIT department. Some of her recent student feedback includes "She is amazingly helpful, efficient and cares for her students. I hope to have future experiences with instructors like I have with Ms. Barrick" and "Instructor is very efficient and answers any questions very promptly, she makes me feel like she honestly cares"

As an employee, Emily is a phenomenal team player and is always willing to help in any way she can in the HIT department, putting her own work aside to assist a co-worker with whatever they need. Emily also volunteers to assist with student recruiting events and other student events within the division such as Give Kids a Smile in February.

Emily sets the standard of what an ideal CCCC faculty member should be, and this is why we have nominated her for employee of the month.

WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Energized Advising: Crafting the Advising Brand at CCCC

On May 9, the QEP team marked the end of a very exciting year by inviting over 150 faculty advisors, success coaches and counselors to meet with an extraordinary consultant from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for an "Energized Advising" event at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center.

Jermain Pipkins, Dean of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles Valley College and a leading national consultant on academic advising, brought a contagious energy to the room as he invited the group to engage in interactive discussions about establishing a more intentional advising approach and curriculum.

Jermain's visit created even more momentum as we prepare to implement our new advising initiatives this fall as a part of the Quality Enhancement Plan. As an institution committed to putting learning first in all aspects of our operation, we made great strides this year toward a more intentional approach to advising and the learning process.

We look forward to seeing you all in August for another successful year promoting student learning. Thanks for all that you do to serve our students!

Health Professionals Celebrated

The Health Information Technology Program along with American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) honored and celebrated health information professionals during the 29th Annual Health Information Professionals (HIP) week, March 18-24. This year's theme was "Our Future Is Bright."

Health Professionals Celebrated Health Professionals Celebrated

Central Carolina Community College offers the Health Information Technology curriculum, which provides individuals with the knowledge and skills to process, analyze, abstract, compile, maintain, manage, and report health information.

Graduates of this program may be eligible to write the national certification examination to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes, health insurance organizations, outpatient clinics, physicians' offices, hospice, and mental health facilities.

During HIP Week, health information professionals engage in focused activities in their organizations and the community to raise awareness of the important work they perform. CCCC's HIT department participated in two career fairs at local Harnett County high schools, set up a display table in the Library on Lee Main Campus, issued a press release to our college and local community, shared information about HIP Week on our display media boards, and ended the week with a faculty social at the Twisted Grape in Cameron.

Dean of Student Learning

Dear Colleagues:

I am thrilled to announce that Jairo McMican will join Central Carolina Community College as Dean of Student Learning on July 2.

Jairo comes to us from Durham Technical Community College where he currently serves as Director of Admissions and Advising Services overseeing college recruitment, advising, admissions, and placement testing. He also has experience as a community college advisor, instructor, and as a transcript evaluation specialist. He previously served as assistant director of admissions at North Carolina Central University and admissions counselor at UNC-Asheville. Jairo is enrolled in the Adult and Community College doctoral program at North Carolina State University, and he has an M.S. in Organizational and Strategic Leadership and a B.S. in Psychology from South Carolina State University.

During the search process, we emphasized the need for an equity-minded leader who will lead a collaborative, college-wide effort to help close achievement gaps in learning, access, and success outcomes across our one-college model. If you did not have the chance to interact with Jairo while he interviewed on campus, I think you will find the combination of his knowledge, passion, skills, and experiences to be an excellent fit to help address challenges and create new opportunities to improving student outcomes.

Thanks for your support and feedback during this important search process. I am excited about moving forward!

Red Clay Review

From the 2017 issue of the Red Clay Review, "Renaissance & Reeboks" by C. Pleasants York.

Izael and Ivan, Guadeloupe and Sindia
are like phoenixes rising gracefully
from the ashes with memories
of Mexican pueblos with sun washed bricks
and two-room schools and sugarcane fields
and clothes washed on heated rocks,
cardboard shanties in the alleys of Tecate,
Guatemala poppy fields and adobe houses,
walking across the desert and eating rattlesnake
cooked over the flame of a cigarette lighter,
and sneaking into San Antonio at 4:00 am
under the floorboards of a truck.

Now they sit in a high school classroom
preening their feathers
of Nike and Hilfiger and Billebong and Gap
and writing vocabulary cards with purple gel pens.
At the beginning of class, I call the roll.
At first they answered, "Aqui."
Now they say, "Right here."

Financial Literacy Month

April was Financial Literacy Month.

In order to highlight this important event, TRiO Student Support Services held Finance Fridays to help students think about ways in which they could handle their finances wisely.

Activities included "Tip for a Doughnut," where students wrote their own financial tips down to share with others. As the name of the activity suggests, they were rewarded with a doughnut!

SSS also hosted "Financial Feud," where students guessed ways that college students waste money and discussed tactics to prevent these habits in their own finances. Again, there were doughnuts!

Finally, there was "The Cost of Coffee?" In this activity, students were able to compare the daily, weekly, and annual costs of coffee from various establishments. As you might have guessed, this activity involved more doughnuts! Our students learned a great deal about handling money responsibly and had a great time with the various activities and snacks.

TRiO Student Support Services and Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two federally funded programs through the U.S. Department of Education that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability.
