2018 Outstanding Adviser Award
It was a pleasure for North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda to present our Outstanding Adviser of the Year Award for 2018 to Diane Kannarr, one of your Central Carolina Community College faculty and PBL advisers. Diane is such a pleasure to work with. She is always so positive with the students and so willing to assist with state activities. She has led workshops, administered competitive events, and just this past weekend served on the very demanding committee to oversee the entire competitive events part of our annual leadership conference.
Hopefully, the other CCCC folks have publicized her recognition. I'm sure she wouldn't call attention to it, though, so wanted to make sure the administration was aware of it and ask you to share it with your trustees and others who would be interested.
Congratulations to CCCC on the numerous awards at the conference but especially for this salute to Diane. It is very deserving. She is well liked and highly respected by both the students and other faculty advisers across the state.
Dan Hazlett

For the third year in a row, the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, directed by Gregg Gelb, has the distinction of being among the 15 jazz big bands selected nationally to attend the 23rd Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival May 10-12.
Dr. Gelb has led the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, a group sponsored by the non-profit, Philharmonic Association, since 2010. They tried for many years to qualify in the national high school competition offered by Jazz at Lincoln Center. In May 2016, in a first for North Carolina, the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble was selected to go to the finals in New York City and earned second place. In 2017, they were again selected to participate, and many of the individual musicians received special recognition. Now they are going back!
The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is among 109 high school jazz bands across North America that entered the competition by submitting recordings of three tunes performed from charts from Jazz at the Lincoln Center Essentially Ellington library. Further, the selection is limited to three bands from each of five regions to allow participation from across the USA. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, under Dr. Gelb's leadership, has also won the Outstanding Community Band Award at the Carolina Jazz Festival, North Carolina Regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Festival at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for eight years in a row, from 2012 - 2018.

Red Clay Review
From the 2017 issue of the Red Clay Review, "Amen & Amended Hallelujah" by Bonnie Korta.
I stand beneath the bloody tree
from which my brother always hung
deer carcasses after the hunt
since the Reaper took my brother
nephews still follow tradition
I look up at the sacrifice and plot subversion
I denied the blood lust of the hunt
by a father who could not bear to see
his daughter tote a gun into green woods shed the lives of the innocent
have had to settle for being a woman
cursed, blessed by a dark twist of mind
I pray over deer carcasses, see the beauty in their residual magic
fancy myself the seanachi for this family of hunters, the deer they kill
I will call down the Cailleach
ancient deer goddess, she who
attends the death of every deer, determines deer destinies
we will dance beneath the hanging tree tonight
weep, wail, rend the dark with spells and blessings
touch beloved creatures with magic staffs, reverse their fates
spirits of doe, buck, yearling jump down from bloody oak
leave ravaged bodies behind
the smoke of deer ghosts fades back into the woods
follows the Cailleach to her cauldron
toward a promise of rebirth next spring
Jake, the spectral golden retriever, howls
from his grave neath the deer tree
warns as he did in life of deer robbery
of the conspiracy of woman and goddess
no one notices but Jake that deer souls
have gone on to their new incarnations
no one listens to this ghostly sentinel
but Cernunnos, blood thirsty god of the hunt
the old horned one, he will notice
he will not be pleased a woman and Cailleach
Got the last word in his hunt
This year at Easter we will sprinkle my brother David
in these woods, beneath this very tree
I pray that the Cailleach will take mercy
on this hunter, let him rise from her
sacred cauldron in these woods
spring up anew in the body
of a deer, of a twenty point buck
let him rise up luminous as the deer's eyes
flashing as bright as his smile dimpled in life
I pray she will crown him with blue morning glories
sweet common weed, twisted round his majestic rack
my brother, just a common man but beautiful too
surround him with a flock of chickadees to erase all his old memories
sing him into his new life, forest king
fee bee, chick a dee dee dee dee dee
may he come full circle under this oak
man and deer, deer and man
amen and amended hallelujah

Notes from Institutional Effectiveness & Research
2nd Trivia Challenge Results!
Thank you to everyone who entered the 2nd Trivia Challenge! The winner of the random drawing is Heather Willett, Dean of Student Support Services! Heather went on her $15 CCCC bookstore shopping spree on April 17. Congratulations!
Here are the correct answers to the 2nd Trivia Challenge from the 2017 IPEDS Data Feedback Report for CCCC:
- 18 institutions are included in CCCC's custom comparison group. (Page 2)
- The Data Feedback Report is intended to provide institutions a context for examining the data they submitted to IPEDS. The purpose of this report is to provide institutional executives a useful resource and to help improve the quality and comparability of IPEDS data. (Page 1)
- $4,907 was the average amount of Pell Grants awarded to all CCCC students for 2015-2016. (Page 5, Figure 9)
- CCCC has a higher full-time retention rate! (It's 65% compared to our comparison group's 62%.) (Page 5, Figure 10)
- CCCC's graduation rate for "200% of normal time" to completion for the 2012 cohort is 32%. (Page 6, Figure 13)
- Bonus insights from our respondents:
- a. "On most metrics, CCCC beats the custom comparison group."
- b. "I learned that women were 64% of the students enrolled in Fall 2016."
- c. "CCCC employs more instructional staff and spends more on student, academic, and instructional support."
Our next Trivia Challenge starts in May 2018!

News From The Library
National Library Week and Spring Fling Activities
Students at the Lee and Harnett Main Campuses enjoyed several activities for National Library Week and Spring Fling, including our popular Maker Fair at the Lee Main Campus Library. Below are some photos from these activities.
Button making at the Maker Fair was our most popular activity.
Paws to Read was another hit during National Library Week with the Vet Med pups!
Harnett Library Community Garden
This year the Library staff at the Harnett Main Campus is continuing the tradition of creating an annual community garden. The garden will be located behind the library, which you can access by walking around the Etheridge Building, or by going through the library computer lab. This garden has created opportunities for community growth, learning, and the enjoyment of delicious fruits and vegetables. This year, with the amazing generosity of the Harnett faculty and staff, the garden will be even bigger than last year. The garden will be expanded to include an herb garden with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme (just like the song!), as well as lavender, cilantro, dill, and chocolate mint. We also have three more raised garden beds that were built by Jon Matthews and the maintenance staff. These boxes will hold the squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, and green beans. And finally, in containers we will be planting tomatoes, okra, cucumbers, jalapeno peppers, and bell peppers (red, green, and yellow).
The garden will be planted on Tuesday, May 1. All are welcome to assist with the gardening - students and staff alike. This will be an all-day affair with refreshments provided for the gardeners. The library staff will continue to care for the garden over the summer. But if you would like to help us out, just stop by the Harnett Main Campus Library or email Grace Sharrar at gsharrar@cccc.edu. We will also keep everyone posted on how the garden grows and when the produce is ready for picking (and eating!).
Librarians Available for Summer Online Classes
Are you teaching this summer? If you think your students could benefit from persistent access to subject-specific library resources, consider adding a librarian assistant to your Blackboard course. If you opt in to having a librarian assistant, we'll place a library folder in your course, which will include a link to the Library Guide to your subject and a persistent chat box that students can use to contact a librarian 24/7 (with the exception of federal holidays).
You can also opt to have a librarian embedded in your course - this means we will use your syllabus to select interactive library instruction modules specific to your course needs, add a library pre- and post-test to the Blackboard course so that we can gauge the effectiveness of the provided library instruction, and add a persistent chat box that students can use to contact a librarian 24/7 (again, with the exception of federal holidays).
Instructors speak highly of the benefits of library involvement in their courses, stating "those that do well on the library lessons tend to perform better on the writing assignments" and "I've heard from numerous students that this has helped them - especially the piece on how to evaluate sources and the APA material." Feel like enhancing your course with very little effort? Consider adding a librarian! Contact Nora Burmeister at nburm777@cccc.edu for more details.
Book Sale
The Lee Main Campus Library is continuing our book sale of discarded materials from now into the summer semester. Everything is only $0.05 each. Stop by to get the good ones before they are all gone!

Alcohol Awareness Day at CCCC
Central Carolina Community College hosted the Arrive Alive Tour(R) from UNITE recently at the Lee Main Campus. UNITE's Arrive Alive Tour(R) program uses a high-tech simulator, impact video, and a number of other resources to educate the public about the dangers of texting while driving and intoxicated driving.
The event also involved Drunk Buster Goggles to simulate impairments that can occur while under the influence. The goggles can simulate impairments, including reduced alertness, slowed reaction time, confusion, visual distortion, alteration of depth and distance perception, reduction of peripheral vision, poor judgment and decision making, double vision, and lack of muscle coordination.
Different field sobriety tests were completed by attendees with and without the goggles to note differences and raise awareness. Photos provided courtesy of Matthew Smith.

He loved his family, instilled in them to put God first, love your neighbor as yourself, and work hard. Fred worked hard as a foreman and forklift operator at Goldston Lumber Company in Pittsboro, which later became Koppers until it closed. Afterward, he started his own logging business and later retired from Townsend feed mill in Bear Creek in 1996. Arrangements by Knotts Funeral Home in Sanford.

We are sad to announce that Jamie Childress lost her mother, Sylvia Churchwell, on April 3. The funeral was held in the Jonesboro United Methodist Church sanctuary, followed by the interment service at Lemon Springs UMC.

COUGAR PETS
Cougar Pets News
My name is Mariska. I am a 4-year-old, spayed female kitty that wants to be the love of your life! I enjoy being the center of attention, so I would do best in a home where I can be the star of the show. I am an adventurous little kitty that enjoys playing, but also knows how to wind down and enjoy the sunshine.
Mariska is currently available for adoption!
All of our adoptable dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. In addition, they have had regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact us at www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony cats and available dogs.
To make it easier for potential adopters to fill out applications, complete the online form at goo.gl/forms/qHJlwXF0h3d1rx472. Happy adopting!
