Congratulations October Employee of the Month:
Megan Kelly

Megan Kelly is an integral part of the VMT team as well as the college. She wears many hats! Megan is an outstanding instructor of lab techniques and pharmacology. She goes above and beyond to be sure her students are understanding the difficult material. Megan is in charge of making sure our animals are well taken care of. She oversees our kennel attendants and schedules all the animal's enrichment and treatment needs. She schedules the kennel and cat ward duties for our animals and 100+ students. Megan helped initiate our remediation plan for students so that we can be sure we are setting up students for success sooner rather than later. Megan never says no to a co-worker or a student who is need of assistance, and she is always very approachable and available. When I was a new instructor, she went out of her way to introduce me to other faculty and staff at the college, and she offered guidance and helpful alternative ways of teaching. Her creativity and friendly attitude makes her a student favorite. Megan helps initiate FFA competitions, and she visits high schools and conventions to represent our program. Megan is very deserving of employee of the month!!

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   I have been with the college for 4.5 years.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   The VMT program at CCCC is one of the top veterinary technician programs in the nation. This fact brought me to CCCC in 2008 to enroll as a student, and, during my tenure here, I always dreamed of coming back to teach. I could tell how wonderful the program was from the start, and I still have that feeling to this day. I am so truly lucky that my dream of being a veterinary technician educator at the program that I love came true!

Q.   Describe what you do for CCCC.

A.   I teach the Laboratory Techniques I, II, and III, as well as the Pharmacology courses for the VMT program. I also manage the animal facilities to help maintain our on-site animal colonies. This involves various duties, including managing student and animal interactions, ordering supplies and food, working with lab instructors on animal usage, maintaining proper safety and health regulations according to our governing agencies, radiation safety, and animal adoptions. Q.   Where were you born?

A.   I was born in Chapel Hill.

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   I grew up a hop, skip, and a jump away in Broadway.

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.   I received my Associate's Degree in Veterinary Medical Technology from CCCC in 2010, and I received my Bachelor's of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology from St. Petersburg College this summer. I am also registered with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board as a Registered Veterinary Technician, and I am therapy laser certified. My next goals are to obtain my Master's Degree, and to receive my Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification.

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   I currently reside in Holly Springs.

Q.   Tell us about your family!

A.   I have a wonderful husband, Keith, and a beautiful 3-year-old son, Liam. We have two cats, Evan and Stella, and hopefully plan to add a dog from the CCCC colony to our little family in the near future.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   I enjoy painting, creative writing, and playing guitar and piano when I can get a spare moment.

Q.   What superhero power would you most like to have?

A.   I would like to have the ability to jump into any work of fiction, or conversely, pull any fictional character out of a book, movie, or show, to make them real.

Q.   Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?

A.   I would definitely choose Evan Rachel Wood, though I feel that her life has been far more interesting than mine!

Q.   What would be your last meal?

A.   I always love a good chili-rubbed ribeye!

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   I absolutely adore the VMT faculty, staff, and students that I have the privilege of working with every day! We truly have some of the best students and instructors, and I cherish every moment with my team. I also think that, college-wide, we have some phenomenal people working at CCCC, and I am so thankful to call you all colleagues!

WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Articulation Agreement Established with UNC Pembroke

Tony Lewis, Assistant Director in the Office of Distance Education at UNC-Pembroke, recently informed us that a new bilateral articulation agreement has been established by and between the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and CCCC for students who complete the required hours for the AAS in Health and Fitness Science and transfer to UNC-Pembroke and major in a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science (Health Promotion or Exercise Physiology Track).

We are excited that UNC-Pembroke is recognizing the wonderful things we are doing in the Health and Fitness Science curriculum and are ecstatic that our students have another university that will recognize the work they are doing in their AAS degree pursuit.

University Transfer Day

University Transfer Day will take place on Nov. 2 from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the CFC Gym on the Lee Main Campus. Thirty public and private institutions from across the state will be in attendance. Upon entering, students will have the opportunity to enter their name into a drawing for door prizes provided from the institutions in attendance. Please encourage students that you work with that are considering transferring to a four-year institution to attend.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to wear their college memorabilia, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2, to help advertise for the event.

TRiO's New Team Members

Rebeccah Lystash, Director of TRiO Upward Bound Programs

Rebeccah joins us from the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia where she has served as a GEAR UP Regional Manager. She also has experience as a Project Director for Research Strategies Network, and as a College Adviser with the Virginia College Advising Corps. She has a Bachelor's degree from University of Virginia and a Master's degree from Syracuse University in Public Administration, and is excited to be joining us to continue the implementation of our Upward Bound Math and Science program, and to initiate our new Upward Bound programs in Lee and Harnett counties this year!

Matt Thewes, Director of TRiO Veterans Upward Bound

Matt was born and raised on the south side of Pittsburgh. After high school, he tried the university life then community college life until he joined the Air Force in 1991. When it was all over, he was in the Air Force for 21 years (7672 days). The percentage not home was near 20 percent of his career, including at various military schools, overseas, or in seven deployments. He has been as far NW as Alaska to as far South as Uruguay, back Northeast to Newfoundland and all points in between. His feet have touched down in 34 other countries and every state except Hawaii. Post retirement activities include creating the All American Veterans Center at FTCC and working with military affiliated students since 2012. Next August, Matt and his wife Lynn will have been married for 25 years. They have three children, ages 16, 14, and 11. He currently resides in Hope Mills. His passion is helping military affiliated people and doing anything automobile related. He is a certified car nut. Having started his work with VUB on Oct. 2, Matt is excited to join the TRiO team and would love for his new colleagues across the college to stop by his office and say hello!

Jennifer Trice, Student Success Advocate of TRiO Student Support Services Programs

Jennifer is the new Student Success Advocate with TRiO Student Support Services. She recently moved to North Carolina from Virginia and is excited to be working at Central Carolina Community College! Jennifer has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Christopher Newport University and received her Master’s degree in Counseling and Human Development with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Radford University. Previously, Jennifer counseled college students on academic probation, served as a Career Services Intern at Roanoke College, taught career development courses to undergraduate students at Radford University, and interned at a psychiatric hospital. Throughout all these experiences, Jennifer developed a passion for working in higher education and helping students be successful in all aspects of life. She noted, "I am very excited for this opportunity and look forward to working with you all and the CCCC community!"

Renisha Harris, TRiO Upward Bound Program Coordinator for Lee County

Renisha began her position as the TRiO Upward Bound Program Coordinator for Lee County on Oct. 9. Renisha is a Sanford native and a 2016 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Sociology. She has most recently worked as the Teen Services and Outreach Coordinator/Director with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Carolina. Renisha is a mentor at heart, is passionate about motivating youth toward their goals, and has made a great addition to the growing Upward Bound team!

The Lee Library welcomes Amanda Woodward as our new part-time Instruction & Outreach Librarian. Amanda has her Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley. She worked for two years as the User Engagement Librarian at Woodbury University in Burbank, Calif., and three years as an Assistant Librarian & Archivist at Disney Consumer Products in Glendale, Calif. Amanda’s hours will be 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. She will be teaching library instruction at the Lee Library, providing reference and outreach services, and managing collection development for programs at the Chatham Main Campus. Stop by the Lee Library to give Amanda a warm welcome!

New Special Collections at Lee
The Lee Main Campus Library has two new special collections.

• Faculty Resources – Books on teaching techniques and learning styles. Located at the beginning of Reference section. Books may be checked out for three weeks.
• Spanish Collection – Fiction and non-fiction books in the Spanish language. Located beside the Best Sellers Collection. Books may be checked out for three weeks.

1. Halloween Workshop Series
   The Lee Library will offer a series of student workshops during the three weeks leading up to Halloween that will share budget-friendly costume ideas. Please share this information with your students.
   • Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. - Creep Costuming: Are you terrified by the cost of store-bought costumes? Join our costume experts to learn about simple ways you can create incredible costumes on a tight budget.
   • Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. - Monstrous Makeup: Lipsticks and primer and blush, oh my! The right make-up can take a costume from ordinary to unbelievable. This workshop will teach you practical tips and tricks you can use to perfect your Halloween look.
2. Haunted Library - Join us for our 8th Annual Haunted Library on Oct. 24 - 31. Stop by the Lee Library for a trick or treat and enjoy the Halloween decorations.

Fall Kick-Off Saturday

Upward Bound Math and Science held its Fall Kick-Off Saturday Session on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Harnett Main Campus. During this time, each cohort had breakout sessions on (10th grade) Effective Study Skills, (11th grade) learning how to register for the ACT and SAT, and (12th grade) beginning the college admissions process. Late this summer, we were notified of two additional grant notifications to serve an additional 120 students. Upward Bound Math looks forward to a fantastic academic year with our current participants along with the expansion of our participants in Harnett and Lee counties.

New DMS Program Director

Thank you for the warm welcome. My name is Krystal Lee, and I am the Program Director for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). I look forward to working with you all. Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a fancy way of saying ultrasound.

I'm a mom of four beautiful children, originally from Baltimore, Md., and the daughter of Army and Air Force parents. I am the only civilian out of my siblings. I have been in the ultrasound field for 16 years, and it is my passion. I am ecstatic about CCCC's DMS program and the opportunity to educate students in this field. It is my goal for CCCC to graduate the best DMS technologists in the state. Did I mention I'm super positive and optimistic?

I'm currently located in Lett Hall's Faculty Resource Room. If you have questions about the new program, would like to work on something in collaboration with DMS, or just want to say hi, feel free to pop over.

Employee Assistance Program

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, sponsored by the STOMP Out Bullying organization. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education released the first definition of bullying to include: unwanted aggressive behavior; observed or perceived power imbalance; and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition.

Although bullying is most commonly associated with schools, bullying is prominent among adults as well, so the same principals can apply in workplaces or anywhere.

The EAP program has resources available for you and your family including the following:

• Workplace Bullying and Disruptive Behavior: What Everyone Needs to Know
• Bullies and Your Child
• What Is Cyberbullying?

You can access these at mygroup.com. From the menu select My Portal Login > Work-life. The username is cccc2014 and the password is guest. In the search bar at the top, type “bully” to find all available resources. For parents who may want to support their children in an anti-bullying attitude, visit www.stopbullying.gov. They also offer a Bullying Prevention training course.

Through the Savings Center, you can now save on hotels, cars, flights, major appliances, technology, clothing, restaurants, movie tickets, and more! The Savings Center program offers a wide array of discounts from leading name-brand retailers. Financial Aid Assistance

If you have questions about a financial issue, speaking with a financial expert can help. Our employee assistance program (EAP) provides you with confidential, free consultations with financial experts on everything from credit and debt, to purchasing a home, or saving for retirement. Cougar Pets News

My name is Samwise. I am a 1.5-year-old neutered male that would love to be your new best friend! I love to play and make friends easily with cats and dogs. I am very sweet and love to be loved, but also know how to be independent.

All of our adoptable cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. In addition, they have had regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams.
