CCCC Leadership through Learning program graduates

The CCCC 2016-2017 Leadership through Learning First Cohort has successfully completed a year-long program, which equips employees with opportunities to enhance their skills, knowledge, and abilities by providing them with resources and networking opportunities to ensure their success. During its commencement, the group shared with members of the President's Council two projects it developed to increase student access from the college's Strategic Plan.

Meet the Ambassadors

The CCCC Ambassadors are student leaders that represent many facets of the college and local community. Students chosen to serve as Ambassadors are offered many opportunities to engage in collegiate events. Candidates are nominated by a faculty or staff member and confirmed by formal selection committee. Once selected, students are required to attend a leadership development course during the summer semester and serve for one complete academic year.

Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health First Aid training was held on May 22 and 23 at the Civic Center. Over 30 faculty and staff went through this two-day (8-hour) workshop to become certified through the National Council of Behavioral Health in Mental Health First Aid.

We had an overwhelming waiting list of people that wanted to take this course, so we are offering it again on July 10 and 11 in the Civic Center Lecture Hall.

PTK going strong at CCCC

Phi Theta Kappa didn't even exist on the Central Carolina Community College campus seven years ago, when college officials started considering an international honorary to replace the local honorary.

Now, CCCC's Beta Sigma Phi Chapter is winning friends and influencing people with national accolades, one student being elected a regional vice president and service projects reaching well beyond the college to shape the entire community.

Teresa Echeverria, a Broadway resident and Western Harnett High School graduate, is pursuing her Associate in Science. Echeverria entered the college to study dental hygiene, but was offered admission to a competitive academic program leading to admission to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she plans to study biology and pursue a career in pediatric dentistry.

Echeverria, who describes herself as fairly quiet and reserved in high school, didn't know much about Phi Theta Kappa until she received email one day commending her academic achievement and offering her membership. From that moment, she threw herself into the experience -- learning how to create and execute community projects, become an effective public speaker and, as she puts it, "let her personality out."

All of that came together when she was elected Phi Theta Kappa Regional Vice President for North Carolina, a role she's using to find ways to elevate other students by strengthening other honorary chapters across North and South Carolina.

Though she stepped into regional office just recently, she says Phi Theta Kappa has already changed her life. "I would have still been that shy little girl from high school," Echeverria says. "I wouldn't have made as many friends or be open to so many people. I'm still trying to work on that, but I wouldn't be who I am right now."

Powell is pleased with what the chapter has achieved in just a few short years. More students are active than ever before and they're working to change their community and the world beyond -- all in a positive way.

"There are other community colleges many times larger with many more members, but their students don't develop any more than ours do," Powell says. "Our students are now developing their own identity on campus as high-achieving students. We want them to feel proud of what they do and how they do it."

Congratulations Dixie Holden for being selected as the School of Nursing Committee Representative for the School of Medicine at Duke University on the School of Medicine's Committee on Appropriate Treatment of Learners. Dixie is currently attending the Duke School of Nursing to obtain her Masters in Nursing with a concentration in Nursing Education. She has previously completed her MaEd at East Carolina, her BSN at Fayetteville State University, and her ADN from here!

Upward Bound Math and Science Celebrates 3rd Graduating Class

On June 2, 13 Harnett County high school graduates and their families gathered to celebrate their completion of the Upward Bound Math and Science program. The graduation banquet, held at the Harnett Health Sciences Center in Lillington, was a celebration of these students' hard work and perseverance throughout their time in high school and in the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program.

All of the graduates have spent the past three or four years preparing for college with the help of the UBMS program. They have attended monthly Saturday workshops, attended intensive summer programs, toured numerous college campuses, participated in ACT and SAT courses, and completed professional internships. All 13 of the UBMS graduates will enroll in postsecondary education this fall to pursue a college degree. Seven graduates are from Overhills High School, two from Harnett Central High School, two from Triton High School, and two from Western Harnett High School will attend colleges such as Georgetown University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, and Central Carolina Community College in the fall.

Notes from Institutional Effectiveness & Research

Outstanding SACSCOC Reaffirmation Off-Site Review Results!

CCCC had only four minor findings in the first step of a three-step process in the reaffirmation cycle! The average for colleges and universities at this stage is 17.5 findings. These results put CCCC in the top 5.7%! Our SACSCOC Vice President especially congratulated us on being found in compliance with all of the major elements including the "outcomes assessment" standards. It is extremely rare for an institution to be found in compliance with all four of these standards at this stage.

Each of the findings will be addressed in a brief Focused Report, which will be submitted to SACSCOC at the end of August along with our formal Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). The On-Site Committee will review these documents prior to their on-campus visit on Oct 23-26.

Thank you to all CCCC faculty and staff for their tremendous contributions to the reaffirmation process thus far! This process has truly helped our college maintain high quality standards and focus on continuous improvement in service to our students and we are confident it will continue to do so in the next stages.

CCPRO @ CCCC

The IER Department hosted the North Carolina Community College Planning and Research Organization (CCPRO) Central Region Meeting, on Wednesday, June 14. Topics included System Office updates, SACSCOC updates, Tableau Data Visualization, State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement, and a general Q&A session. Brian Merritt and Linda Scuiletti welcomed the visiting IER professionals.

Personnel News

The library welcomes Lindy Hall as our new Library Assistant for Acquisitions at the Lee Main Campus Library. Lindy has her Master's degree in Library Science from San Jose State University, and a Bachelor's degree in Crime, Law, and Justice from Pennsylvania State University, where she was a distinguished military graduate in the Army ROTC. Lindy served in the U.S. Army for six years and achieved the rank of Captain. Since her military career, she has worked in libraries for six years. We are excited to have her join our library team! Stop by to meet Lindy and give her a warm welcome.

New Fast Track Computers

The Lee Main Campus Library now has four "Fast Track" computers available for quick computer tasks that can be done in less than 10 minutes. Examples are for quick printing, searching the library catalog, or checking email. The Fast Track computers are located in the alcove leading back to the study rooms. These computers are in response to student requests on library surveys to have quick-use computers available for busy students on the go.

Library Book Sale

The Lee Main Campus Library is having a book sale. Discarded books and audiovisual materials are only 5 cents each. Stop by and shop while the selections are still good!

Reminder: New Login for Library Databases

The library now has a new login for accessing online resources from off campus. Students, faculty, and staff can now login using their personal Blackboard login credentials. The former generic password has been retired. Please communicate this information to your students for the summer and fall semesters. Faculty who have links to library resources in their Blackboard courses should update their links using the new proxy prefix. Summer Reading

Summer reading is currently under way. Faculty and staff are invited to come to the Lee or Harnett Main Campus Libraries to create a reading goal for the summer. Stop by and get a reading log to record your progress, and get some goodies too! Once you've reached your goal, bring back the completed reading log and you will get a prize. Visit the library for more details.

Volunteers Still Needed for Harnett Main Campus Library Community Garden

The Harnett Library community garden is growing and in need of volunteers to help weed, water, and prune. All are welcome to stop by the library to help. Those who help will get first dibs on the produce when picking time comes!

Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Human Services

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Denise Martin will assume the position of Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Human Services effective June 1.

Denise joined the college in 2015 as the Program Director for the new Health Information Technology Program. Denise's selection is a testament to her work ethic, dedication, and eye for details. Her education and background in project management and accreditation experience will be an asset to help the College move forward in expanding our health sciences programs.

Graduation Cruise

On May 5, the TRiO Student Support Services STEM-Health Sciences, Student Support Services Classic, and Veterans Upward Bound programs hosted a celebration for participants who graduated or successfully completed their program.

This Annual Graduation Banquet was held on the "Lady of the Lake" Dinner Cruise on Lake Norman. The banquet included dinner, live music, and certificate ceremony. During the event, 40 Student Support Services participants were recognized who graduated in the program's first full year of programming, and Veterans Upward Bound honored 67 veterans who completed the program since it began in 2012. Many participants in attendance spoke of their gratitude toward their TRiO program and staff who supported them along their journey. The TRiO staff are proud of the graduates and praised their endurance, persistence, and courage.

Dusty Old Treadmill?

Is your treadmill acting as clothing rack in your room or covered in dust in your garage? Consider donating it to a good cause! Humans aren't the only ones who can treadmill.

The Cougarpets dogs (the VMT rescue dogs on campus) are in need of treadmills to burn off some energy and stay slim and trim while avoiding the heat. The VMT department is looking for used treadmills to train our dogs on to help them get some exercise. If you have a working treadmill you would like to donate, please contact Jessica Holt at jholt051@cccc.edu in the VMT department.

ESL Civics Class Tours International Civil Rights Museum

 

CCCC’s and El Refugio’s ESL Civics class toured the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro on June 3. The students explored the history of the American Civil Rights Movement in an effort to better understand the struggles of social justice and equality in the United States.

Employee Assistance Program: Did You Know

In addition to providing free and confidential counseling, our Employee Assistance Program offers additional benefits such as:

• Financial and legal resources including a free simple create your own will.
• Free online courses.

Perks at Work

Perks at Work offers employee discounts of up to 25% on name brand, practical and luxury items, as well as travel, amusement park, and entertainment tickets. Register for free at www.perksatwork.com/login.

First-time users will need to register using their work email address and the company name of EAP in order to access the Savings Center. When entering the company name, as you begin to type a drop-down menu will appear. Please choose EAP from the options in the drop down.

• Don't forget to use the company name of EAP.
• Please register with your work email address.
• Be sure that you can access your email right away. A system-created message will be sent to that address immediately.
• You will need to retrieve the email to complete your registration and then log in to begin exploring the site for the great discounts.

Legal and Financial Center

To access the Financial and Legal Resource Center, go to the EAP website at www.mygroup.com. You will choose the "My Portal Login" and the "Work-Life" option. Enter our unique employer username and password combination-username: cccc2014 and password: guest.

Once you have accessed the work-life site, you will have access to a wealth of resources and online seminars. In the "Centers," you can find the "Legal and Financial Center." This is where you find a link for more information on how to create simple will at no cost to you plus more financial links.

Skill Builder Center

In the "Skill Builder Center," you can access e-learning courses that you can complete in 15-20 minutes. Human Resources recommends several of the topics including:

• Cultural Diversity in the Workplace
• Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
• Drug-Free Workplace
• Business Etiquette and Professionalism

However, there are several courses for your personal enrichment such as:

• Appreciating Personality Differences
• Emotional Intelligence
• Effective Communication
• Eating Your Way to Wellness and more.

The presentations are narrated and you will receive a certificate of completion.

News From The CCCC Family

We regretfully announce the passing of a past instructor of CCCC, Iris Ragan Austin. Iris was always working to improve her education and even in her 80’s insisted on learning to use a computer and get online for email and internet access. This desire to learn was demonstrated throughout her life and passed on to her children. She took classes at night and on the weekends to obtain a teaching certificate, taught elementary school early in her teaching career, and eventually taught at Central Carolina Community College.
