Congratulations February Employee of the Month:
Trinnette Nichols-Jones
Trinnette Nichols-Jones made my registration experience, which I had been dreading all Christmas break, a wonderful experience. There aren't enough words to express my thanks for the many things she did from taking the time to make packets, sitting side-by-side to guide me, answering my many questions, and so on. I learned so much from her that day that helped to improve the way I had been doing things. If I could give an award to the person that has gone above and beyond the call of duty during last chance registration for me and the students, I would present it to Trinnette.

- A. 13 and 1/2 years (since August 2003).
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. In Marion, South Carolina, and I am the youngest of three children (all girls).
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. Originally from South Carolina, but haved live in North Carolina since 2000.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. Master in Counseling from Webster University and Bachelor in Psychology from Francis Marion University.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. Fayetteville with my husband Don Jones and two boys, Tristan (11) and DuMarcus (9).
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I enjoy quiet time relaxing as well as fun activities with my husband and children. I love researching and learning new things to keep current both socially and academically.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I've always wanted to be in the helping field providing assistance to individuals toward achieving their personal best. My current and previous roles at CCCC have allowed me to live out my passion each and everyday. And I am grateful.

The Compliance Certification Report-Submitted to SACSCOC!
Boxes containing required documents, including the Compliance Certification Report were submitted to SACSCOC on Feb. 23, during Valentine's season as planned! This only happens once every ten years!
Thank you, CCCC, for all of your help and support! All across the College, people contributed to the Compliance Certification Report, which is required for our 2018 Reaffirmation. Our CCCC faculty and staff shared their knowledge, editing skills, and 1000s of pieces of documentation to make this happen. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
CCCC's Rebecca Parker Wins Honor
Rebecca "Becky" Parker, CCCC Dunn Center Site Coordinator, has been honored with the 2016 Ambassador of the Year award from the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce.
The presentation read, in part:
"Our 2016 Ambassador of the Year is a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the Chamber. Since her job relocated her to Dunn full time in mid-2015, she has been a very active part of the Ambassadors Club - attending ribbon cuttings, open houses, and Business After Hours. She has assisted throughout the year in many capacities at Boogie on Broad and selling Taste of Dunn raffle tickets before the Christmas Gala. She also helped at Business Fest and was a very active member of the planning committee. During Operation Thank You, she delivered 39 packets to 34 businesses in one day!
"Her positive attitude is infectious and you just can't help but smile when she is around. Her giving heart and willing spirit are all testaments to this award. This giving attitude transfers over to all that she does whether it be in her professional life where she volunteers for the CCCC Foundation's annual Golf Tournament or other programs and events."

William R. "Bill" Tyson Retires
Central Carolina Community College's William R. "Bill" Tyson (second from left) retired as CCCC Harnett Provost as of Feb. 1. The CCCC Board of Trustees has honored Mr. Tyson with the new title of CCCC's Harnett Provost Emeritus. Pictured with Mr. Tyson are the three men who served as CCCC President during his 33-year career at the college -- Dr. T. Eston Marchant (far left, 2008-present), Dr. Matthew S. Garrett (second from right, 2004-2008), and Dr. Marvin R. Joyner (far right, 1983-2005).
Hope, Hopeful, Hopelessness
Recently, my sister Sally (not her real name), and I were discussing the Denzel Washington movie, "Fences." I had not seen the movie, but she had. Sally left the theater in distress because the movie struck so close to home.
While "Fences" is created out of the experience of an African-American family, the situation portrayed in the movie could be a reality in anyone's life. All human beings have the ability to put up fences as safeguards to avoid further injury, but a fence has the potential to erect hopelessness in the life of the owner and all who are enclosed within it. It is this crippling sense of hopelessness created by her own dad with which Sally identified.
Sally overcame her initial sense of hopelessness when she was able to turn her thoughts from fear and rejection to hope for the future. She was able to make the change because someone came alongside her and showed her the possibilities that lie outside the fence that had been erected by someone else around her life. A small glimpse on the other side made her hopeful.
Students often seek a college education because of a sense of expectation and hope for the future. Staff and faculty at Central Carolina Community College are dedicated to tearing down "fences" by supporting every student through programs and services, and by encouraging students to pursue goals with hope and expectation of success.

TRiO Student Support Services Visits Appalachian State University
TRiO Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences participants visited Appalachian State University for a transfer exploration visit. For some participants, this was a chance to visit their dream university. For others, it was an opportunity to explore a new university and potentially add it to their prospective transfer school list.

The first stop was lunch at Trivette Hall overlooking the duck pond on West Campus. After lunch, students attended a presentation with admissions staff designed specifically for transfer students. They then took a walking tour of campus led by Mountaineers who had transferred to ASU.

After the tour, students visited with the TRiO Student Support Services program at Appalachian State to learn about the types of support available to them once they transfer.
Did you know? Tutoring services are only available to freshman and sophomore students at Appalachian State, unless enrolled in the university's Student Support Services program. If you're working with a student who is transferring to ASU, encourage them to sign up for this helpful program!

The students had a wonderful trip and were able to experience many new things. One student reflected by saying, "This was my first time touring a college campus, my first time being that far northwest, and the first time hearing about accommodations for transfer students, which was surprising and peaked my interest. I like that the group of CCCC students that went were of all ages. This truly shows what a community college is all about."
TRiO Student Support Services and Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two Department of Education funded grant programs that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability. Student Ambassador Selection Process
Greetings Faculty and Staff,
It's that time of year to start our selection process for the 2017-2018 Student Ambassadors. Please nominate curriculum students that you feel can represent our students and would be an excellent asset to the college's Ambassador Program. The program awards 10 students the opportunity to serve as leaders for one complete academic year.
The criteria for selection consists of (1) a 3.0 cumulative GPA, (2) evidence of leadership, and (3) an interest in community service. Students who are selected must maintain a minimum of 12 semester hours during their term of service, a 3.0 semester GPA, and the highest level of professionalism in order to maintain an active status in the program. Students who are part-time can be nominated if they can agree to enroll full-time, should they be selected. The students selected receive full tuition scholarship for the Fall and Spring semesters. Additionally, they receive uniforms and such to wear while they serve.
Please submit the names of the students you feel would serve CCCC well as a Student Ambassador. Submit all nomination forms to Aaron Mabe via campus mail or complete the Google form by Friday, Feb. 24. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The library is still accepting book order requests from faculty and staff until March 1 for this fiscal year. Requests can be made online using the Library's Order Request Form, or by contacting the librarian assigned to your campus library.

It's not too late to schedule library instruction sessions for your spring classes. Faculty may request an instruction session using our online form, or by contacting the librarian at your campus. You can also schedule a 15-minute refresher session or a 5-minute introductory pop-in visit. Don't miss the opportunity to give your students the extra research help they need to successfully complete their assignments.
Blind Date with a Book
The Lee Main Campus Library held its Blind Date with a Book event on Feb. 13 to 17. Library books and our users definitely felt the love this Valentine's Day as approximately half of our Blind Date books were checked out for a date. Save the date for National Library Week coming April 10 - 14. This year's theme by the American Library Association (ALA) will again be "Libraries Transform." Last year, we created a video around this theme featuring our library users, which was submitted to the ALA. The ALA then incorporated a clip from our video into their video, which features English instructor David Flatley, and a shoutout to CCCC on the ALA web page! Watch for David at 0:54. TRiO National Day of Service (Feb. 25)
Please join the North Carolina TRiO community in honoring TRiO Day, our National Day of Service, by donating any of the following items for our literacy drive to benefit Smart Start Rowan:
- new or gently used books for children ages birth through Grade 5
- crayons
- pencils
- letter blocks
- letter/number fridge magnets
- small notebooks or composition notebooks
Donations will be collected by Ashley Tittemore, UBMS Director, in Wilkinson Room 37 until Friday, Feb. 24.
For this day of service, the North Carolina Council of Educational Opportunity Programs (NCCEOP) is listed as an organization on the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated Serve Your City website, and the organization with the most registered volunteers will win a $2,500 grant! Your participation could help bring scholarship funds to TRiO students in North Carolina!
All volunteers who donate should register as a project volunteer by Feb. 18.
Following the drive for donations, TRiO students and staff will travel to Livingstone College on Feb. 25 to collaborate with other TRiO programs from across the state to assemble literacy kits for donation and conduct a community beautification project.

Creative Activities
Fun pictures from our EDU 151 Creative Activities Class! This semester, as part of their Early Childhood Education program, students were making snake bubbles. Along with the fun, students devised appropriate activities and lesson plans.

Dunn Tourism Event
The Dunn Tourism Event, held on Feb. 16, was a success! Some of the visitors took advantage of a tour of the Senior HTS Apartments while at the workshop.
Special thanks to Mari-inetta for helping me set up everything and to all who let us use items to decorate with!
Wall Art at Dunn Center
The project we started a while back to clean up and frame some of the old pictures of Harnett High School graduating classes is complete. Our maintenance team placed and mounted the framed pictures along the walls of the Education Building hallway. Pretty cool stuff and a fitting tribute to the structure's history as an education site. Give Becky Parker the kudos; she drove it to completion.

Perks at Work
Perks at Work offers employee discounts of up to 25% on name brand, practical and luxury items, as well as travel, amusement park and entertainment tickets. Register for free at www.perksatwork.com/login.
First-time users will need to register using their work email address and the company name of EAP in order to access the Savings Center. When entering the company name, as you begin to type a drop-down menu will appear. Please choose EAP from the options in the drop down.
- Don't forget to use the company name of EAP.
- Please register with your work email address.
- Be sure that you can access your email right away. A system-created message will be sent to that address immediately.
- You will need to retrieve the email to complete your registration and then log in to begin exploring the site for the great discounts.
Legal and Financial Center
To access the Financial and Legal Resource Center, go to the EAP website at www.mygroup.com. You will choose the "My Portal Login" and the "Work-Life" option. Enter our unique employer username and password combination--username: cccc2014 and password: guest.
Once you have accessed the work-life site, you will have access to a wealth of resources and online seminars. In the "Centers" - you can find the "Legal and Financial Center." This is where you find a link for more information on how to create simple will at no cost to you plus more financial links.
Skill Builder Center
In the "Skill Builder Center," you can access e-learning courses that you can complete in 15-20 minutes. Human Resources recommends several of the topics including:
- Cultural Diversity in the Workplace
- Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
- Drug-Free Workplace
- Business Etiquette and Professionalism
However, there are several courses for your personal enrichment such as:
- Appreciating Personality Differences
- Emotional Intelligence
- Effective Communication
- Eating Your Way to Wellness and more.
The presentations are narrated and you will receive a certificate of completion.

News From The CCCC Family
We regretfully inform everyone of the passing of a former employee, Marie Thomas Morris, 88, life-long resident of Sanford, who died peacefully at her home on Feb. 15. Marie retired from CCCC where she was employed by the Business Department. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Swann Station Baptist Baptist Church at 7592 NC-87, Sanford, NC 27332 or to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 2991, Sanford, NC 27331.
We regretfully announce the passing of a former CCCC Harnett Campus employee, Danny Amos Dean, 69, of Mamers, who passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 11. Danny worked at the Harnett Main Campus as the Maintenance Supervisor. He was a life-long member of Antioch Baptist Church in Mamers.
We regretfully announce the passing of Kassandra Lyles' father, John Montegna, 77, who passed away in Reno, Nev. Services for family to be held in Reno. Those who want to send condolences can mail them to Kassandra's house in at 2305 Springhill Ave., Raleigh 27603.
CCCC regretfully announces the unexpected passing of a friend and donor of the college, Starr Webb. Mrs. Starr Freeman Webb, 69, of Mamers passed away on Jan. 24. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cool Springs United Methodist Church, PO Box 617, Mamers, NC 27552 or to the CCCC Foundation, Attn: Dalanie Roe Webb Memorial Scholarship, 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
We have learned that Thomas Davis Ratliff, 82, of Sanford, died Sunday, Jan. 22. Thomas worked in the electrical engineering field many years before teaching at Central Carolina Community College in the electronics' program. He retired from CCCC after 20 years of service. Memorials may be made to Cool Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 1313 Cool Springs Road, Sanford, NC 27330 or CCCC Foundation Electronics/Engineering Program Fund, 1105 Kelly Drive, Sanford, NC 27330.
