Congratulations October Employee of the Month:
Nick Testa

Being a "bridge" between Lee County Schools and CCCC is the primary responsibility of a liaison--and what a bridge that is! From providing all LEC students with textbooks and schedules, to being an advisor to all LEC students, to dealing with a whole host of bumps in the road that may come when two organizations are working together, Nick gets the job done with grace and ease. He is a forward thinker who knows both sides of what the school system needs in their endeavors to satisfy the high school degree requirements, and what is needed for the college degree pursuits to be met. Nick takes the requests of the school system and seeks to find the best avenue that satisfies both LCS requirements and CCCC. Nick is the model of flexibility and rolling with the punches!

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   I began working for CCCC last August.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   I previously served as school counselor at Lee Early College. When this position became available, I thought it would be important for this person to be knowledgeable of the LEC mission and of the partnership it had with CCCC.

Q.   Describe what you do for CCCC.

A.   As LEC liaison, I advise and assist the early college students as they work toward their Associate degree.

Q.   Where were you born?

A.   I was born and raised in Endicott, NY.

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   Endicott, NY. Union-Endicott High School (just outside of Binghamton, NY).

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.   I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania and a Master's of Education in School Counseling from SUNY Oneonta. I also received an Italian language certificate through study abroad in Rome, Italy.

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   My wife and I currently live in Sanford.

Q.   Tell us about your family!

A.   My wife, Whitney, and I celebrated our two-year wedding anniversary in July. I am the youngest of four children. I have five very energetic nieces and nephews that live in NY/MD - Cecelia, Juniper, Hugo, Dante, and Magnolia.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   My wife and I spend most of our time traveling, whether it be in North Carolina or somewhere out of state. We were lucky enough to visit London, Paris, and Rome this summer for two weeks. Also, I love watching all kinds of sports, especially Duke basketball.

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   I feel very lucky to be able to work for CCCC. It is definitely a family atmosphere where everyone around you is supportive and willing to help. I just wanted to thank everyone on campus for making it a great place to work.

The Harnett Small Business Center, and the Triangle South Enterprise Center were well represented at the 25th Dunn Business Fest on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Dunn Community Building and Dr. PK Vyas, MD Recreation Center.

The Harnett Small Business Center and Triangle South Enterprise Center received certificates for being a 25-year partner with the Dunn Business Expo.

"Best in Show" Winners

A big thank you goes out to the volunteers and participants who helped with this year's Sept. 27 Dunn Family Medical Supply Business Fest booth.

Our partner "Rooms to Go" graciously allowed us to use items from their Dunn I 95 North Showroom and as a result of our creative Business Services and other CCCC staff we won Third Place in the "Best in Show" competition, which was new this year in celebration of Dunn Family Medical Supply Business Fest's 25th anniversary.

First place in the contest went to Golden Years Nursing Home.

Second Place went to Cornerstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Third Place went to Central Carolina Community College.

Charlie the Cougar was also in attendance along with other CCCC recruiting staff to assist with manning the booth and promoting CCCC.

SAGA Annual Meeting

Several members of the CCCC family attended the Sanford Area Growth Alliance's (SAGA) annual meeting at the Carolina Trace Country Club on Sept. 29. Highlights of the event included a videotaped college update from Dr. Marchant focusing on the college's master campus plan needs and the upcoming groundbreaking for Lee County bond projects. We were thrilled to be on hand to see clients of the Economic and Community Development division win the Large Industry Award (Caterpillar) and the Small Industry Award (Red Wolf). Attendees were appreciative of Duke Energy's provision of seats to this important community event.

Just in time for Halloween!

Jane Andrews, Writing Coach at the Chatham Main Campus Writing and Reading Center, has edited an anthology of ghost stories and poetry. Published by Main Street Rag, Polterguests is a collection of scary, spooky, and supernatural tales from some of the best writers in the region.

As Jane writes in her introduction:

The stories in Polterguests will make you doubt what you think you know about ghosts. You may recognize a spectral encounter close to your own experience (you know you have one). Polterguests is not just an entertaining collection of spooky tales. It is a field guide to the habits and habitats of those who have died and then return, entering our lives as visitors--the guest part of Polterguests. Some of these guests are welcome and many are not. You'll find haints who are angry, rowdy, malicious, intent on harm, as well as other specters who are kind, wise, or simply seeking justice. A few find death dull and just want to have some fun.

Why Community College?

Many people view the value of a community college education predominately from the standpoint of cost savings. While financial affordability is important, it is not the single most important aspect of service to a community.

Students attending community college gain so much more than mere value for their money. They gain more than education and knowledge. Many individuals attending community college gain confidence in their ability to learn and succeed. This student success does not happen by accident; it comes about through careful design and planning. At Central Carolina Community College (CCCC), faculty, staff, and administrators collaborate to ensure students reach their education goals. CCCC plans for student success through qualified, professional instructors who provide challenging opportunities to learn. Knowledgeable librarians, helpful academic assistance staff, writing & reading center coaches, STEM lab, and tutors provide programs and services to afford the best possible outcomes for learners.

For some, it was in the community college classroom that a career calling was realized. Many students continue the quest for knowledge and career preparation to the baccalaureate and master's level because of the confidence attained at the community college level. Some even return to teach in the same setting where they were challenged to pursue personal greatness.

Why Community College? Because it's a great place to be an encourager. I'm back, and I love that CCCC has called me home.

ESL Field Trip

Nutan Varma, Ph.D., Lead ESL Instructor

Recently, my ESL class went on a field trip to Green Leaf Care Center, a local nursing home in Lillington. The following week, Ms. Sheila Simmons, Chief Executive Officer of First Choice Community Health Centers, visited my class as a guest speaker. She has invited us to visit FCCHC to identify the possible career opportunities and also learn about the health services they provide to the community. Both events were planned to help students explore a CNA career pathway.

Spartan Race at Fort Bragg

The CCCC Phi Beta Lambda chapter sponsored a team to participate in the Spartan Race at Fort Bragg on Sept. 10. The members are part of the Wellness and Fitness committee of the chapter, a committee created to encourage members to exercise, participate in outdoor group adventures, and live a healthy life. The event kicked off a series of events that will take place over the academic year that will include chapter events like outdoor hiking, paddling at Jordan Lake, mountain biking on area trails, camping, college intramural teams, skiing, and finish with another Spartan Race in Charlotte next April.

Many of the members in the chapter are former military and athletes who are accustomed to daily routines to promote healthy living and hope to encourage others in the chapter to do the same. The chapter is made of members from all walk of lives and a variety of ages. Activities created by the committee are designed so that all members can participate.

NC Sculpture Consortium Exhibition

The Wellington B. Gray Gallery presented, in coordination with the North Carolina Sculpture Consortium Conference hosted by professor Hanna Jubran and the ECU School of Art and Design Sculpture Department, an exhibition of work by North Carolina sculpture faculty from Sept. 2 - Sept. 29. Our own Phillip Ashe, CCCC art instructor, was one of the faculty selected to exhibit his sculpture. Congratulations, Phillip!

In the Spring 2015 and 2016 College Services Surveys, many of you asked "What is Institutional Effectiveness & Research (IER)?" We're happy to fill you in on who we are and what we do.

Countdown to the Compliance Certification Submission to SACSCOC
All across the College, people are working hard on the Compliance Certification report, which is required for our 2018 Reaffirmation. CCCC faculty and staff are kindly sharing their knowledge, editing skills, and 1000s of pieces of documentation to make this happen. Thank you, CCCC, for all of your help and support! The Compliance Certification will be submitted on Valentine's Day 2017. That's only four months away! We hope you'll share in our SACSCOC love between now and then.

Outcomes and Assessment Report Outs
Last year, Dr. Marchant requested that each area report out on their Annual Program Planning and Review (Outcomes and Assessment). It was such a hit, we are doing it again this year. It is a great opportunity for departments to showcase their important work to our College's senior leadership. Each five-minute presentation includes a discussion of the department's three favorite outcomes, how they've "closed the loop" on the assessment process, and any accomplishments and innovations.

Congratulations and Farewell, Caroline!
Caroline Hallam, Instruction & Electronic Services Librarian at the Lee Main Campus, recently accepted a new position as Instruction Librarian for NC LIVE. In her new position, Caroline will be training other librarians across the state on the NC LIVE databases. She has been a great asset to the library team and will be missed. Her last day at CCCC will be Oct. 28. We wish her all the best in this exciting career endeavor!

Voting and Election Information Available
Are you ready for Nov. 8? Come by Lee Main Campus Library for books and movies about elections, politics, and more! While you're here, pick up information about one-stop early voting and same-day registration, print out a sample ballot, and find your polling place. Accepting Book Order Requests
The library is accepting book order requests from faculty and staff. Requests can be made online using the Library's Order Request Form. If you have any questions regarding book order requests, please refer to our Collection Development Policy and Guidelines.

Coming Soon - New Reserve Request Process
Beginning in January 2017, the library will have a new process for placing materials on reserve. This will improve efficiency in both processing the requests and in managing shelf space for reserve materials. Watch for more details coming soon.

Confucius Classroom Welcomes New Instructor

Yuehan Ma is the newest visiting instructor for Central Carolina Community College's Confucius Classroom, an educational partnership created with N.C. State University's Confucius Institute and Nanjing Normal University.

Ma is the fourth Confucius Classroom instructor at CCCC, as she succeeds Guan Wang (2012-2016), Ling Huang (2010-2012), and Shuya Che (2008-2010). The Confucius Classroom promotes an intercultural exchange grounded in Chinese language courses, but offering a wide range of cultural events and activities as well.

A reception to honor Ma will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford.

Hooping for Relief

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to bring the family and come out to support "Hooping for Relief" on Friday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the CFC Gym on Lee Main Campus.

Come out and support relief efforts for victims of the recent flooding, and help us bring in the new basketball season! Enjoy a slam dunk contest, 3-point shoot-out with the 2016-2017 CCCC Men's Basketball Team, half-court shot contest, and games and face painting for the kids. During this time, we also ask that you bring non-perishable food items, toiletries, toys for children, and clothes to donate to those affected by Hurricane Matthew. Monetary donations will be accepted.

This event is sponsored by the CCCC Athletic Department, Student Ambassadors, the Men of Academic Distinction and Excellence (MADE), and the Women of Academic Distinction and Excellence (WADE).

University Transfer Day

University Transfer Day will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the gym on the Lee Main Campus. Cougar shuttles will be available to transport Chatham and Harnett County students to the Lee Main Campus for the event.

Our College will welcome representatives from over 20 senior institutions that will provide our students with information on admissions and transfer options. Food truck vendors will be on site to provide refreshments. Please look for several reminders leading up to the event as you will not want to miss this year's University Transfer Day!

Please encourage your students, regardless of major, to attend this event. The University Transfer Day Planning Team looks forward to seeing you on Nov 17!

Veterans Day Ceremonies

CCCC will observe Veterans Day with ceremonies at Siler City Center and the Wicker Center.

Siler City Center

Veterans Day will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Siler City Center. This event will begin at 10 a.m. and will offer classes conducted by veterans who will share their military experiences.

The event will include a ceremonial activity with patriotic music by vocalist Victoria Chall, accompanied by guitarist Danny Gotham, with participants in flag-arrayed formation.

This year's theme is "Celebrating American Heroes." The observance is intended to offer gratitude for deserving men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and for the year-round sacrifices of service members and their families.

The event is free and open to the public.

Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center

This Veterans Day Ceremony will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in front of the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. All CCCC students, staff, faculty, as well as the community at large, are welcome and encouraged to attend the ceremony. We regret to inform everyone about the passing of Melanie Yarborough's father, John Michael "Mike" Yarborough, age 64, of Sanford, who died Sunday, Oct. 2, at his home. A graveside service was held on the family farm. Please keep Melanie and her family in uour thoughts and prayers.

We regretfully announce the passing of Mary Ann Gaster's husband who passed away. Robert G. "Bob" Gaster, age 78, of Sanford, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, at his home. Read Bob's full obituary. Burial was at St. Stephens, Sanford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AA, or the charity of your choice.

We are sad to inform everyone of the passing today of Felicia Crittenden's grandfather, George Edward Crittenden, Sr. of Winchester, VA. Cards and condolences may be sent to The Crittenden Family, 1533 Dalton Place, Winchester, VA 22601.
