WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
Congratulations September Employee of the Month: Terri McKone
Terri is also involved with program students in unique ways when it comes to programmatic requirements. She oversees that students are current on their immunizations, CPR requirements, etc. She helps with patient appointments and helping students when communicating with outside providers. She helps students with organizing important documents for their patients.
For years, Terri has managed the various equipment utilized by the dental programs. She helps ensure that equipment is repaired and running for program needs. She troubleshoots issues as soon as problems are noted.
Terri always helps with events that occur during non-working hours. She helps organize items needed for pinning ceremonies, faculty meetings, advisory committee meetings, etc.
Terri is worth her weight in gold. Not everyone can handle the stresses that working with the general public can bring. Patients are not always nice to her when she greets them and they can be rather demanding when the dental program can't always meet their needs. Terri always remains calm and tries to put out fires before they happen. Her first priority has always been to help the students with their needs and, of course, to attend to faculty needs, as well. She is a hard-working lady!

- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. Nine years on Oct. 3, 2016.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I started as a student in Office Systems Technology, wanting to update job skills. During that time period I had an opportunity to serve as an Ambassador, and was able to assist at many great activities. When the office manager position with the programs came open, I applied, and was fortunate to be chosen.
- Q. Describe what you do for CCCC.
- A. Hmm, what I do for the college...a little bit of everything! I assist instructors, students, and patients, do front office check-in work and man the phone, clerical work, arrange for maintenance, order materials and supplies, do adjustments on dental chairs, try to troubleshoot computers--and I am always learning something new!
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in North Kingstown, RI; my father was serving at Quonset Point Naval Air Station.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I grew up in Aberdeen, NC.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I have Associate degrees in Accounting and Office Systems Technology.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I have lived in west Sanford for almost 34 years.
- Q. Tell us about your family!
- A. My husband John and I have two grown sons, Jonathan and Timothy, a 14-pound cat named Max, and a 7-pound Cocker Spaniel/Yorkie mix named Isaac. Isaac is lucky that Max is pretty easy going!
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I like to go to the movies, read, dine out, walk my dog, and swim.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I appreciate the dedication our instructors and students exhibit, and how they strive for excellence.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
A Year End Review
Trio Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM and Health Sciences is beyond excited about the completion of year one of the federally funded grants from the U.S Department of Education. Some of our noteworthy highlights from this past year are as follows:
- Each program is serving over 90% of the funded amount.
- Over $25,000 dollars in Supplement Grant Aid were awarded to participants.
- 4 transfer trips.
- 1 cultural event.
- Started our Supplemental Instruction in DMA and DRE classes.
- Offered over 14 different workshops.
- Provided over 750 hours in individual and group contacts.

Peer Leaders in ACA Courses
On Aug. 12, the College Success Center trained six current students to serve as Peer Leaders in ACA courses this fall semester. The students worked as Orientation Leaders for New Student Orientation over the summer.
Peer leaders will work alongside ACA instructors to help facilitate classroom activities, to share their perspective on the student experience, and to mentor students in their ACA course.
The College Success Center hopes that this will increase student learning and retention in ACA courses and will lead students in these courses to be more connected to CCCC. Additionally, we hope to create and sustain additional student leadership opportunities through the Peer Leader role.
The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society Presents...
The Heart of Carolina Jazz Society presents legendary jazz guitarist Larry Coryell. The show is at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 at the Lee County Arts and Community Center, 507 N Steele St., Sanford, NC 27330.
Larry Coryell, a giant of jazz guitar, is perhaps "the" pioneer of jazz fusion and a major influence in the development of American music. Mr. Coryell's innovation and influence in jazz is acknowledged by musicians, audiences, and critics. He has made jazz history since his arrival on the scene in the 1960s and continues to worldwide. He appears at major jazz festivals and venues in the US, Europe, and Asia. He has recorded over 100 albums and has performed with jazz greats including Miles Davis, Chico Hamilton, Gary Burton. David Miller, a noted jazz critic. For All About Jazz, Miller said of Larry Coryell, "Jazz at its finest complex, virtuosic, and yet easily accessible."

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra is directed by CCCC's Gregg Gelb. Gelb began the Orchestra in 1991 when he was Visiting Artist at CCCC. Over the years, the organization has presented many fine artists in the world of jazz such as: Ceclie McLorin Salvant, Bud Shank, Dave Valentin, Houston Person, Rene Marie, Stanley Jordan, and Sonny Fortune.

Thank you to all that assisted with New Student Orientation this summer. We truly could not have done it without you. In total we had:
- 12 new student orientation sessions.
- 397 students attending NSO in person.
- 40 students completing online NSO.
As we begin to think about NSO for Spring 2017 and Summer 2017, we want to hear from you! Please take a few minutes to complete our NSO Survey for Faculty & Staff survey.

Fitness for College
Our new Health and Fitness Science program continues to reach out into the community. Thanks to instructor Cara Langston, full-time physical education teacher at Tramway Elementary, for inviting Carl Bryan to work with 3rd through 5th graders and talk about "Fitness for College". We addressed both career education, particularly in the Health Sciences, our College, and our mission to continue their education past high school.

Student Outreach And Recruitment Update
The SOAR (Student Outreach And Recruitment) Team has completed another successful year. New student enrollment is up again compared to last year (which was a huge increase over the prior year).
Please know that the SOAR staff appreciate all that you do in assisting with our recruitment efforts. We understand we ask a great deal of our faculty and staff, but that's because our service area community and beyond is interested in seeing all the wonderful programs we have.
It's great to be in demand and we plan to keep it that way!
We have started our recruitment cycle for spring 2017 and fall 2017. We'll be calling upon you once again to assist with activities like sophomore high school career fairs, 8th grade tours for Lee and Harnett counties, Instructional Day, and more.
We are looking forward to working with you all once again, and remember that every student counts when it comes to meeting student enrollment goals.

SSS/ SSS STEM Student Orientation
On Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, Sept. 15, Student Support Services held two separate orientation sessions to welcome back TRiO students for the Fall 2016 semester, tell them about exciting upcoming workshops, the new Mentor Program, and allow them to sign-up for upcoming fall events.
Between the two events, 40 students attended with 27 attending the afternoon session and 13 attending the morning session. Each session had a diverse panel of 3-4 SSS/STEM participants. The participants shared their experiences about Central Carolina Community College and TRiO Student Support Services and how they have been able to succeed.
During the student panel presentation, students were asked to record what they learned from the panelists and advice they would give to future Central Carolina Community College TRiO SSS/STEM students.
Students ended the orientation by being first to sign up for their choice of upcoming fall trips, including a cultural event to Charlotte's Aquarium, a transfer trip to East Carolina University, or a transfer trip to Appalachian State. Students interested were also given a chance to sign up for the SSS/STEM Mentoring Program that hopes to help students better themselves and grow professionally by having a peer or professional mentor.

The Library recently received the new 8th edition of the MLA Handbook. These will be on reserve at all campus libraries very soon.
New ATI TEAS Study Manual, 6th Edition Revised
The Library was recently notified that revised copies of the ATI TEAS Study Manual 6th edition will be shipped to us soon. These will be on reserve within a couple of weeks.

Films on Demand Workouts at Harnett Main Campus Library
Don’t forget to join Jennifer Seagraves at the Harnett Main Campus Library on Tuesdays at 4:00pm for a 20 minute workout in the library instruction lab using Films on Demand workout videos. Just bring a mat and some comfortable clothes to move in. Contact Jennifer for more information.

College and Career Readiness Partners with El Refugio
College and Career Readiness is partnering with El Refugio to offer ESL classes at Jonesboro United Methodist Church. The classes meet Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. To date, 65 students have enrolled for the fall session. Visit El Refugio's Facebook page for more pictures and information.
Ed.D. in CC Leadership Visit from NCSU
For those interested in obtaining a Ed.D. in Adult and Community College Education, plan to join us on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Smartroom (CFC #810).
Representatives from North Carolina State University's College of Education will be visiting to promote their executive format Raleigh and Charlotte based doctoral program in Community College Leadership. Faculty will be on hand to introduce you to the overall degree format, as well as application and admissions guidelines. Graduates of this program acquire competencies to lead transformational change in community colleges focusing on improved student outcomes.
Program features include:
- Designed for completion in 3.5 years
- Two courses taken in each of summer, fall, and spring
- Dissertation integration throughout the program
- Executive format class meetings Fridays and Saturdays
- Courses typically meet on odd numbered weekends

News From The CCCC Family
Bereavements
We regretfully announce the passing of Talia Friday's grandmother, Mrs. Marjorie Young, 77, of Columbia, SC. She departed her earthly life on Sept. 14 at Providence Hospital, Columbia, SC. Our deepest condolences to Talia's family.
Sadly, we announce the passing of a former employee of CCCC. Mary Jane G. Baker, 86, of Dunn, who worked in the GED program at Harnett Main Campus, passed away on Sept. 12. Funeral service was help at the Antioch PFWB Church in Dunn.
We regretfully announce the passing of Jim Burgin's (CCCC Trustee Vice Chairman) mother, Kathern Burgin, 87, of Knoxville, TN. She died Sept. 7 at Parkwest Medical Center. The funeral service was held at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Make-A-Wish East Tennessee, 6005 Century Oaks Drive, Suite 500, Chattanooga, TN 37416. Online condolences may be sent to http://www.rosemortuary.com.
We regretfully inform you of the passing of Dr. Kim Browning's mother, Edna Mae Browning, 84, of Rocky Point, on Sept. 5. Burial took place at Banner Chapel Advent Christian Cemetery. Dr. Browning is looking to set up a scholarship in her mother's name.

Monday, Oct. 31 Char Solomon, a biographer and archaelogist with a speciality in the Maya who is a Road Scholar from the NC Humanities Council, will present a program at 1 p.m. at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center Lecture Hall in Sanford.
