Congratulations August Employee of the Month: Denise Martin

Denise Martin is always willing to go above and beyond her job description to ensure student success at Central Carolina Community College. Denise is developing the new Health Information Technology Program from the ground up, including developing Blackboard courses for the entire program and preparing for initial program accreditation. Denise has also devoted her time to updating printed forms to electronic forms for several college departments that have allowed processes to be accomplished in less time and with less impact to multiple departments.

Denise has also volunteered to create and teach a new course for College and Career Promise students even though it meant she would work on Fridays during the summer schedule. CCP students appreciate the additional effort Denise puts into her courses. This includes a one-minute phone break! Students may need to check their phones, but at a time that doesn't take away from valuable instruction. Students appreciate interactive games and videos Denise includes in her course in order to engage them. Denise was selected to serve on a panel as a healthcare expert regarding the automation/computerization of electronic health records and the job opportunities that accompany those changes. We appreciate Denise's dedication and willingness to think outside-the-box in order to put learning first and improve student success!

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   Since July 1, 2015.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   In March 2015, I was invited to be a part of the Advisory Board for the Health Information Technology program. At the first meeting, I met Dean Godfrey who was quite persuasive over the next few months in convincing me to leave Womack Army Medical Center where I was working as an outpatient coding auditor. At the time, I was not looking for a career change, but I had always planned to end my career teaching. Luckily for me, it happened much sooner than I thought.

Q.   Describe what you do for CCCC.

A.   I am the Program Director for the Health Information Technology program. We are part of the Health Sciences division and are just starting our first cohort this month, which is very exciting. Over this past year, I have been working on creating the courses in our degree program and preparing for accreditation.

Q.   Where were you born?

A.   Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   Although I was born in Wisconsin, I only lived there for a few months. My sister was born the next year in Orlando, FL. We moved to New Jersey when I was three, and then to New York when I was five. I lived in upstate New York as a child and teen, and moved to Summerville, SC, in 1996, which is my husband's hometown and where I now call home.

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.   I have an associate's degree in Health Information Technology from Rasmussen College, a bachelor's degree in Health Information Management from DeVry University, and an M.B.A. with a concentration in Project Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. I am currently working on a graduate certificate in Higher Education Leadership from DeVry University, and will graduate this December.

I hold several industry credentials as well - Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Emergency Department Coder (CEDC), and Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   Whispering Pines, NC.

Q.   Tell us about your family!

A.   I have been married for 16 years and my husband is in the Army stationed at Fort Bragg. We have one daughter who is 16.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   I enjoy cooking, reading crime novels (Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors), gardening, and DIY home projects. My husband and I are huge movie buffs and we go to the movies almost every weekend.

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   I consider this to be my "dream job" and every day I am excited about what I do. Working in education has been a big adjustment for me after working in the healthcare industry for 20 years, and every day I am still learning something new about higher education and about teaching. I have been blessed with several mentors here who have taken me under their wing and patiently answered my millions of questions. Ultimately, I am so honored to be a part of the CCCC family, and to be selected as the employee of the month. On my very first day of orientation, Dr. Scuiletti said, "Welcome to the best job that you will ever have," and she was definitely right about that!

New Faculty Orientation

More than a dozen new full-time faculty members arrived at Central Carolina Community College for a week-long orientation. Scott Byington, Dean of Arts, Sciences and Advising, organized the orientation along with Amanda Carter, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Daisha Gaines, Director of Organizational Development.

Under the theme, "Map to Success," the festivities began with routine employment paperwork and a welcome from President T. Eston Marchant. The rest of the week included receptions to meet college officials, an overview of college services and policy, advice on how to be effective in the classroom, and hands-on working sessions with department chairs.

Danielle Bruner, a CCCC alumna and one of the new full-time instructors, is leaving a private dental practice to teach second-year dental hygiene students. It's a career move that fills her with excitement and optimism, having spent her days off over the last year at the college as an adjunct instructor.

"I had a phenomenal experience as adjunct instructor, and that was the light that inspired me to teach full time," she said. "That's where my heart was and I can give my passion back to the students."

College and Career Readiness Partners with Coty, Inc. to Offer ESL Classes

The College and Career Readiness department has partnered with Coty, Inc. to offer onsite ESL classes for plant employees. Students have the option of enrolling in one of four classes that are offered at varying times to accommodate shift schedules. To date, 50 students have registered in the class.

Welcome VUB Outreach and Services Coordinator

The Veterans Upward Bound program welcomes a new Outreach and Services Coordinator! Amanda Parkstone joined the VUB team on July 6 after serving four years as the Military Admissions Coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She not only brings with her years of professional experience serving the military-affiliated student population, but also a decade of experience as a military spouse.

Amanda's passion to serve those who have served stems from her role as a proud Army wife; her husband is an active duty Special Operations soldier stationed at Fort Bragg. Originally from San Diego, Amanda and her husband arrived in North Carolina in the spring of 2009 and have been here (give or take) ever since. At the time, Amanda had just completed community college where she was actually a program participant in a TRIO SSS program. She transferred to UNCW where she graduated in 2011 with a B.A. in Art History with a Minor in Classical Studies. In 2012, she joined the Transfer Admissions Team at UNCW where she worked tirelessly to improve resources and services for military-affiliated students and helped to increase military-affiliated student enrollment by 7%. While working full-time at UNCW, she started their Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies program and is currently working on completing her thesis so she can graduate in the coming year. In her spare time (whatever that is) she also serves as the Vice President for the Southeastern Council on Military Education (SECOME), one of 11 state Advisory Council on Military Education (ACME) groups in the country where she handles their development committee, non-profit status, annual scholarships and annual symposium planning.

Amanda has hit the ground running and has already spent time, boots on the ground, in all five of the counties that VUB serves. Her hope is that her experience and connections within the Veteran resource community will contribute to VUB's success in reaching their target audience and increasing the number of Veterans served annually. New Director of Secondary Partnerships

I am thrilled to announce Mary Schmid as the new Director of Secondary Partnerships.

Mary served as the Assistant Director of Admissions for High School Outreach at Fayetteville Technical Community College. She previously served as Director of High School and College Relations at Sandhills Community College and also worked at FTCC as High School Connections Coordinator. Mary began her career as a high school guidance counselor in Cumberland County. Mary brings a wealth of knowledge and experience having managed dual enrollment within NCCCS since the days of Huskins to the present Career & College Promise program.

Constitution Lectures

Lectures on the U.S. Constitution will be presented at the Chatham Main Campus and Harnett Main Campus. History Instructor Robert Barnes will present two lectures focusing on the document's importance and relevance. Following the presentations, there will be a question and answer session. The lectures will take place:

• Noon on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Chatham Main Campus, Building 42, Multipurpose Room.
  • This lecture will cover a brief history of the U.S. Constitution, with a focus on the document’s importance and relevance.
• 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Harnett Main Campus, Miriello Building, Multipurpose Room.
  • This lecture will focus on the history of the U.S. Constitution, its importance as an Enlightenment Era document, and its significance to modern America.

Retirement Reception

A retirement reception was held on Wednesday, Aug. 24, for College and Career Readiness Harnett County Coordinator Melody McGee. The event was held at the Harnett Main Campus. During the reception, Melody was presented the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Making the presentation on behalf of Gov. Pat McCrory was Gilda Rubio-Festa, Associate Vice President College and Career Readiness for the N.C. Community College System Office.

In the Spring 2015 and 2016 College Services Surveys, many of you asked "What is Institutional Effectiveness & Research (IER)?" We're happy to fill you in on who we are and what we do!

Outcomes and Assessment Report Outs!

Last year, Dr. Marchant requested that each area report out on their Annual Program Planning and Review (Outcomes and Assessment). It was such a hit, we are doing it again this year. It is a great opportunity for departments to showcase their important work to our College's senior leadership. Each five-minute presentation includes a discussion of the department's three favorite outcomes, how they've "closed the loop" on the assessment process, and any accomplishments and innovations.

SACSCOC Leadership Team Starts Back!

The third round of SACSCOC Leadership Team meetings are starting this month. The team is working to plan for CCCC's upcoming 2018 SACSCOC Reaffirmation. They will focus on reviewing the first draft of 96+ SACSCOC standards and finalizing the Compliance Certification report which is due March 1, 2017.

Project of the Month

IPEDS stands for Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. During the IPEDS Fall Data Collection, we work with dedicated CCCC staff to report data for Institutional Characteristics, Completions, and 12-month Enrollment. It's a lot of work. Thank you to everyone who helps. Interested in looking at IPEDS data for CCCC or other schools? All data is available to the public through the IPEDS Data Center.

Library Staff Changes

The Library welcomes Barbara Bera as the new Library Assistant at the Harnett Library. She replaces Barbara Wood who retired earlier this year. Ms. Bera was formerly the Evening Library Assistant at the Lee Library, and she is a graduate of the Library and Information Technology program at CCCC. Stop by to give her a warm welcome!

 

The Library also welcomes Jessica Thomas as the new Evening Library Assistant at the Lee Library. Jessica also graduated from the Library and Information Technology program this year. Stop by in the evening to meet her and welcome her to CCCC!

The library is accepting book order requests from faculty and staff. Requests can be made online using the Library Order Request Form, or sent directly to your campus librarian. If you have any questions regarding book order requests, please refer to our Collection Development Policy and Guidelines.

Films on Demand – More Than Just Instructional Videos

Did you know that Films on Demand has more than just videos to support your curriculum classes? It has videos to support your healthy lifestyle too! You can find over 900 videos in the Personal Health & Wellness category. To help promote a healthy lifestyle and Films on Demand streaming videos, join Jennifer Seagraves at the Harnett Library on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. for a 20-minute workout in the library instruction lab. Professional Development Opportunities

I wanted to take a moment to welcome back our faculty and to share with you the great PD opportunities we have planned for this year. I hope you will take advantage of these sessions and let me know if there are others you are interested in or would like to facilitate.

One change for this year is that we will be offering PD Tracks that are directly tied to our strategic plan. For those individuals that complete all sessions within a track, he/she will receive a certificate of completion that can be used to verify the five hours of required Professional Development credit for the year. The first session of the Leadership Through Learning First track is Sept. 16.

However, feel free to drop-in for any session you would like. Please see the links for more information and to register.

By completing this track, participants will leave with a better understanding of ways of achieving goals: 1- Learning First, 2- Student Access, 3- Student Success, and 7- Collegiate Environment from the Strategic Plan.
