Congratulations July Employee of the Month: Aaron Mabe

Aaron Mabe has always displayed a high level of professionalism and energy in providing advising and admissions materials to our students. His colleagues will agree that his work is exemplar and concentrated on student success!

Recently, he was selected to take on a new role as the Ambassador Advisor, and since then has selected 10 wonderful students to provide service to the college. I am extremely impressed with his organization and tenacity to develop a comprehensive leadership program that will not doubt impact these 10 students immensely.

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   I have worked at CCCC for over three years.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   I started working in February of 2013 with the Veterans Upward Bound program, providing Career and Academic Advising for potential Veteran students. Having previously worked with another TRiO program, I knew that this new program was an excellent opportunity for CCCC and local community to support our Veterans. In November of 2014, I began working in the Admissions Department on the Sanford Campus.

Q.   Describe what you do for CCCC.

A.   As an Admissions Counselor, primarily I work with new students, but occasionally advise current students. I assist curriculum students with admissions, registration, advisement, and placement testing interpretation for 15 CTE programs and Special Credit students. I also serve as the Advisor for the Ambassadors Program and teach a section of ACA.

Q.   Where were you born?

A.   I was born in Fayetteville, NC.

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   I grew up in Hope Mills, NC.

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.   I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Social Work in 2011 from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. I continued my education by completing a second Masters degree in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University (Boston, MA) in 2012.

I started college with aspirations to become a counselor and assist families in low-income areas. After working in higher education as graduate student, my interest changed drastically to helping students gain more access to higher education. Ever since then, I have work at various community colleges in North Carolina.

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   I live right outside Hope Mills in a community called Gray's Creek.

Q.   Tell us about your family!

A.   My wife (Cathleen) and I have one mischievous little girl, named Maddison Jean (3 years old). Cathleen is a 4th grade teacher at local elementary school in Cumberland County and is pursing her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Garner-Webb University.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   Every summer we visit our family in Boston, MA and catch a Red Sox game! I run three times a week in the mornings and enjoy going to the movies.

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   CCCC is a unique institution that offers a lot of great opportunities for both students and employees. It is rewarding to know the impact that we all make in the local and surrounding communities. Thank you!

Writing and Reading Center Welcomes New Coaches

The Harnett Main Campus Writing and Reading Center (WRC) is excited to welcome two new employees. Please join in welcoming Liz Hinnant, Head Coach, and Jacob Berger, Coach. Students in seated or hybrid courses may use the Writing and Reading Center as a walk-in or by making an appointment. Students enrolled full-time in online or evening classes can receive Writing and Reading Center assistance through the Online Writing Lab (OWL).

After graduating from UCLA with a degree in English, Liz Hinnant taught English in the public school system for more than 15 years. During her teaching career she worked with students of all ability levels and academic needs, from second language learners to gifted and talented students. No matter the need, she's looking forward to helping every student succeed.

Jacob Berger, a recent graduate of Campbell University with a major in English and a minor in Theatre Arts, has experience working in writing centers. He will be attending N.C. State University this fall pursuing his Master's in English. Jacob enjoys working at the WRC not only because he is able to help students, but also because he enjoys getting to know the interests and goals of our CCCC students.

Please encourage your students to use the WRC as a step toward their academic success. We are here to help!

Senior Activities Director-Dunn Center

I am proud to announce that Phyllis Taylor will be joining CCCC in July as Senior Activities Director at the Dunn Center. This new position is an extension of the College's operations in Dunn, with the City funding the position and its programming and the College assuming administrative responsibilities for the Senior Activities Center. Having held the same position with the City of Dunn since 2000, Phyllis brings a wealth of experience in planning and managing a wide range of programs and activities for senior citizens from communities in and around Dunn, including Meals on Wheels.

The College is fortunate to have such an experienced leader to continue Dunn's long tradition of senior activities. Please join me in welcoming Phyllis to the College!

Newly Myers- Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Certified Practitioner

Jessica Rogers, Director of TRiO Student Support Services Programs is newly certified practitioner in Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) of the Step I and Step II instruments. The MBTI is a personality inventory and a popular training tool for professional development and organizational improvement. MBTI results gives people helpful feedback and how they are different from others, but most importantly it is useful with employee coaching, conflict management, team building, career development and more. Jessica completed four days of intensive, highly engaging training that well prepared her to administer and interpret the MBTI assessments.

Elon's 13th Annual Teaching & Learning Conference

The 13th Annual Elon Teaching & Learning Conference will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18. This year’s conference theme, Evidence of Learning, is reflected in sessions that explore various approaches for creating learning experiences that produce significant and lasting impact.

The opening speaker is Dr. David B. Daniel, Professor of Psychology at James Madison University. Dr. Daniel has been teaching for over 25 years and his scholarship bridges research and practice. Dr. Daniel’s work focuses on “evidence demonstrated” knowledge that can be used to inform individual teaching practices and educational policy. He has been given the Society for Teaching of Psychology’s Teaching Excellence Award and he is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science. His plenary will focus on "reconstructing the learner." Research studies deconstruct the individual into pieces such as cognition, emotion, and motivation. Yet, as teachers, we have an entire person in front of us every day. Dr. Daniel will explore the question of whose job is it to put the pieces back together as well as highlighting some of the unintended effects of our pedagogical approaches.

New Dental Hygiene Instructor

Danielle Bruner has joined the dental hygiene team as the second year instructor. She is a CCCC dental hygiene graduate and has been an adjunct with the college for two years. She has recently completed her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene and plans to pursue her master’s degree. She brings a plethora of clinical dental hygiene knowledge to our program and our students. TRiO Upward Bound Math and Science Summer Program Highlights

Our Upward Bound Math and Science students are off to a very busy summer!

Six UBMS graduates from Harnett County High Schools are enrolled in ENG 111 and/or MAT 171 at CCCC and started their courses on June 13. In addition to taking these classes, students participate in a semi-weekly college transition seminar with UBMS Summer Bridge Coordinator and UNC-Chapel Hill rising senior, Brandon Garcia, in which they discuss topics that will help them prepare for their upcoming freshman year in college. Courses will run until Aug. 9 then the students depart for a three-day cultural enrichment trip to New York City.

Another group of 10 rising seniors are participating in a summer internship program in which they are serving 25-40 hours per week at a local business or organization which matches their career goals. During this time, they are mentored by a professional in the field and meet weekly to reflect on their internship experiences and participate in a College Admission Application Prep seminar. Kevin Tolson, UBMS Summer Internship Coordinator, has been doing a great job of facilitating these seminars, communicating with students and internship supervisors, and conducting site visits! This program ends on July 29, and the following week students will be departing for a three-day cultural enrichment trip to Baltimore to visit several colleges and explore the area!

Finally, our rising juniors are excelling in their math and writing boot camps, as well as their ACT prep courses. Weekly STEM workshops give students the chance to discover new passions. From lasers and photonics, to robotics and dental hygiene, these kids have been enjoying each opportunity to dive into fun and exciting new science fields! College tours of Appalachian State, UNC Pembroke, NCCU, and UNC-Chapel Hill are providing students with an interactive way to engage with current college students and gain more information on potential college options. Students are really looking forward to the three-week residential program, in which they will move into Campbell University and get a first-hand look at what college will entail from July 17 to Aug. 5. This group of students will also attend the cultural enrichment trip to Baltimore in August.

QEP Update: My Academic Pathway

The QEP summer pilot is progressing through each of the new student orientation sessions this summer. As of mid-July, we have administered the RIASEC interest inventory at seven sessions. The RIASEC scores have been used by students to start discussions with fellow students on their program of study as well as with faculty/staff prior to registration. Preliminary data has revealed that 89.7% of students initially applied for a program that matches their RIASEC scores. The QEP team will reconvene once the fall semester begins to review the data and discuss the next steps for the QEP!

Summer Bridge Program Kick-Off

The College Success Center is piloting a new "Summer Bridge" program for summer 2016. Selected applicants will participate for two weeks beginning July 18 through July 28 on the Sanford Main Campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Each day students will be immersed in CCCC's campus culture while earning an academic credit for the study and success skills they will acquire.

In collaboration with Central Carolina Works (CCW), this bridge program was designed to help ease the transition for both CCW and incoming students into higher education. The Summer Bridge Program will provide a seamless transition to college by (1) exposing students to college resources early, and (2) by educating students on the "soft skills" that are so crucial for success in higher education. Participants will earn a one-credit hour course while being immersed in a fun and intensive learning environment that will give them an advantage heading into their full college experience.

Project of the Month: CCCC’s Decennial Reaffirmation

CCCC’s Compliance Certification report is due to SACSCOC on March 1, 2017. The Compliance Certification will be 1000+ pages long and it documents CCCC’s compliance with all 96+ SACSCOC Standards. Dedicated authors from across CCCC are writing this report. So far, we’ve completed 91% of narratives in our first of four rounds! Only 308 steps to go!

Institutional Survey Results - Now Available!

You asked and we listened! Ever wonder about the results of CCCC’s annual surveys? You can now view our survey summaries and/or numerical survey results on our webpage! Films on Demand – More Than Just Instructional Videos

Did you know that Films on Demand has more than just videos to support your curriculum classes? It has videos to support your healthy lifestyle too! You can find over 900 videos in the Personal Health & Wellness category. If you search for “workout” or “yoga”, you can find 132 videos and 257 videos respectively. To help promote a healthy lifestyle and Films on Demand, join Jennifer Seagraves at the Harnett Library on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. for a 20-minute lunch workout in the library instruction lab. Patsy Jean Neighbors McLamb, age 70 of Broadway, died Thursday, July 14, at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford. Funeral services were conducted at the Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church.
