Congratulations January Employee of the Month: Maryann Aucompaugh

Maryann Aucompaugh goes the extra mile for her students. Not only does she provide her students with learning aids in class, but organizes virtual learning outside of class as well. Her graduate students speak highly of her. Several of them talk about how she motivated them to finish and graduate. Maryann Aucompaugh would be a great mentor for new instructors, demonstrating her continued dedication here at Central Carolina Community College to others.

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   I have worked at CCCC for two years and five months.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   I started my higher education at CCCC in the MOA/OA programs. After I graduated, I was invited to participate on the MOA/OA Advisory Board. After working for an orthopedic surgeon for five years and obtaining a B.S. in Healthcare Management, an opportunity became available to instruct for the MOA/OA programs. It seemed like a great career move and interesting experience. I applied for the job, and now here I am - a part of the CCCC family.

Q.   Describe what you do for the College.

A.   The college has given me a chance to do something I am passionate about (healthcare), while helping others reach their educational goals. I instruct many of the medical administration courses (medical billing and coding, healthcare laws and ethics) and courses from the OA and HMT programs as well. Besides instructing classes, I advise students; am a faculty association board member; and am part of the QEP Implementation team. I recently accepted the role of interim lead instructor for the MOA/OA/HMT. Through my various roles and duties on campus, I try to live up to and support the mission, values, and impeccable reputation CCCC envisions and has built. I am proud to be part of this organization.

A.   Washington, PA

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   I grew up in Canonsburg, PA with my parents, twin sister, and little brother. We moved to North Carolina my senior year of high school, and I have made it my home ever since.

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.   CCCC: AAS in Medical Office Administration and Office Administration; Franklin University: B.S. in Healthcare Management, MHA (Health Administration). I am currently working toward a B.S. in Health Information Technology.

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   Sanford, NC

Q.   Tell us about your family!

A.   I have been married for 14 years to my amazing husband. We have two beautiful daughters, Jordan, 19 and Aylah, 14. I also have three fur-babies.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.   My hobbies include curling up with a good book, furthering my education, and spending time with my family. My daughter also does cheerleading so I spend quite a bit of time being a "cheer mom"!

Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?

A.   I just want to say thank you for this honor and recognition. I look forward to furthering my career with CCCC and continuing to work with the best staff and faculty other community colleges wish they had.

President of NC CORD

Emily Hare, Executive Director of the CCCC Foundation, has been elected president of the N.C. Council of Resource Development Inc. (NC CORD). She will serve as president until October 2016.

"I am honored and flattered to have the opportunity to lead such an outstanding organization," said Hare.

Hare said she truly loves and enjoys her work as Executive Director of the CCCC Foundation. "My main focus is to be able to provide as much financial support to CCCC and its students so that we can help better the lives of the individuals who attend here and the communities we serve," she said.

A native of Pinehurst, Hare received her Bachelor in Arts (Communications) degree from Wake Forest University, her MBA from Pfeiffer University, and is currently working on her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at the University of the Cumberlands.

Hare's husband, Bud, is assistant superintendent at Tobacco Road Golf Course. They have a daughter, Delaney Elizabeth, and have another child due in early April.

VUB Provides Holiday Cheer

The staff of CCCC's Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program, over the holiday season, had been working with local stores like Piggly Wiggly, Walmart, Food Lion and local churches to raise the funds, necessary to provide a small amount of holiday cheer to the Veterans participating in our program. In total $590 was raised to purchase canned goods, stuffing, muffins, cornbread, and turkeys for our Veteran families. These participants work hard every day, sometimes just to provide the basics for their families, Veterans Upward Bound works closely with every VUB participant and knows the majority of their needs.

What is VUB?

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a program at CCCC provided to low-income and first-generation Veteran participants that is a free, non-credited, non-profit, pre-college program federally funded with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The primary goal of VUB is to prepare eligible veterans to enter college, be successful in college, and to graduate from college. In order for students to be fully prepared for college, VUB emulates the college experience. High expectations are placed on participants while attending VUB in order to support their success in the program and later in college. Additionally, VUB has experience in counseling, providing participants solutions to problems, such as low self-esteem, marital problems, housing problems, drug and alcohol issues, or family and work challenges that may interfere with their educational progress. Finally, VUB provides tutoring weekly and some weekends by qualified professionals interested in working with Veteran populations.

In December, the VUB staff provided 31 turkeys and 21 food bags to our VUB participants and Veterans in the community. Many of our VUB participants have served and fought for the greatest nation in the history of civilization. Our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guard have been, and continue to be, a strong force for freedom and defender of human rights. The American flag has been raised around the world, not to show domination, but to a hope for liberty and a better way of life. Because of several of our VUB participants and all of our Veterans, America remains to be an inspiration of hope to much of the world.

Foundation Grants

Congratulations to the CCCC Foundation. CCCC received the Operation Round Up grant for $1,400 from the Salvation Army to offer GED scholarships for College and Career Readiness students.

Tips for Making Word Documents Accessible

The 1973 Rehabilitation Act requires public institutions make all services accessible to those with disabilities.

When making Microsoft Word Documents, please keep in mind that students may be using text-to-speech software. Crafting smooth document navigation can easily become a part of your document creation process.

A tip for this month: limit blank line spaces (pressing the enter button or space bar more than once in order to align text). With certain software, these spaces between paragraphs are read as "blank." Instead, utilize the paragraph spacing option on your home ribbon to add space before or after your paragraphs.

Special Populations will be alternating office hours at the other two campuses every Thursday morning, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This rotation will continue through the busy seasons - the start of each semester and during mid-terms and finals.

Dunkin Donuts Coming to Sanford

Last fall, the Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) Career Center hosted a job fair for Dunkin' Donuts. The job fair was held on CCCC's Lee Main Campus at the Bell Welcome Center and was co-sponsored by the Triangle South Workforce Development Board. The NCWorks Career Center of Sanford assisted in the advertisement of the event that gave over one hundred applicants the opportunity to be screened by Dunkin' Donuts management for job openings for their new location.

Pinehurst Donuts LLC, currently operates three other locations in the Fayetteville, Pinehurst/Southern Pines, and Lillington areas, and is excited about opening a fourth location in Sanford. Dr. Pamela Senegal, the Vice President of Economic and Community Development for CCCC, Career Center Coordinator Mary Parker, Career Development Specialist Marie Huggins, TSWDB Performance and Communications Coordinator Adena Mitchell, and the Executive Director of Central Carolina Culinary Institute Chef Gregg Hamm, discussed the job fair, and the development of a ServSafe training course specifically designed for Dunkin' Donuts staff.

Applications are still being accepted for shift leaders, crew members, and bakers and those selected as shift leaders will receive CCCC's ServSafe training and have the opportunity to take the ServSave Food Protection Manager Certification Exam, a nationally recognized credential in the Food Service industry.

"I have been in operation for over 25 years and have attended many career fairs and the one you and your staff set up for us is by far the best I have been a part of," stated Laurie Patterson, the Multi-Unit Leader of Pinehurst LLC to Mary Parker. "The professionalism was outstanding and you did a great job of marketing the event. We had way more candidates than expected and from a great variety of outlets in the Sanford community."

Construction for the new location is well underway and plans are to open the doors the first week of February 2016.

Project of the Month: IPEDS Winter Data Report

IPEDS stands for Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. During the IPEDS Winter Data Collection, we work with dedicated CCCC staff from the Registrar's Office and Financial Aid to report on student financial aid, graduation rates, 200% graduation rates, and outcomes measures. It's a lot of work! Thank you to everyone who helps! Interested in looking at IPEDS data for CCCC or other schools? All data is available to the public through the IPEDS Data Center.

New Staff Member Welcome!

Welcome to Derrick Dupuis, our new Institutional Research Analyst in the Institutional Effectiveness & Research Department! Derrick holds both a B.S in Biology and an M.S in Computational Biology from SUNY at Buffalo. His prior positions include working as an Academic Success Coach and Adjunct Instructor at Villa Maria College in New York. Derrick joined us on January 4th, and will be located in the Science Building IER Office. Derrick will work with Institutional Effectiveness & Research as well as with the First in the World grant.

The Library password to access our online resources from off campus can now be requested electronically via our web page! To request the password anytime day or night:

1. Click on the Off Campus Username & Password link on the library's home page.

2. Enter your CCCC email address in the space provided and click on Submit.
   
3. Check your inbox for an email with the password information.

NEW! Pronunciator ProLive Conversation Sessions

Pronunciator, our online language learning tool for 80 foreign languages and ESL, now has free, online, teacher-led conversation classes available via ProLive. This new feature has numerous 30-minute live sessions available each week to help language learners practice conversations at all skill levels. Instructors are all native speakers who are teachers in their country with advanced degrees. A mobile app for ProLive will be available in a couple of weeks for on-the-go access. Languages currently available include Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, ESL, French, Italian, and Tagalog. More languages will be added as ProLive expands. ProQuest Flow Is Now RefWorks

On Jan. 18, our ProQuest Flow citation management system became the new RefWorks, a more powerful research management tool. Current Flow accounts were seamlessly transitioned by the vendor to the new RefWorks. Users should expect to see some cosmetics changes within the user-friendly design. Watch for more information on new features coming soon.

Films on Demand Update

Films on Demand now has a new platform with new features, including improved speed and improved browsing/searching. Take a look at the fact sheet for more details.

Harnett Library Lab Update

The Harnett Library will soon have a new computer lab. Some of the furniture was delivered this week to outfit the 20-seat computer lab, as well as six computers for the Health Sciences Center study suite. However, printing services may be delayed while the college identifies and implements a new print management system. An open house will be held when the project is completed. Watch for updates on our Facebook page and in the next issue of Cougar Bytes for when the lab will be ready to open.

Library Instruction & Pop-In Visits

Schedule your class for a library instruction session now while it's still early in the semester. Classes are customized to fit your specific assignments and course needs. You can also schedule a five-minute librarian pop-in visit to your classroom to give your students an overview of library services and what's new for this semester. Contact us for more information.

The Library is accepting recommendations for new books to order to support your programs and assignments. Submit your requests online, or forward selections to Tara Guthrie (Chatham or Lee campuses) or Barbara Wood (Harnett campus) by Feb. 15.

Note of Thanks

I wanted to give my thanks for the support the NCVetscorps Holiday Gift Assistance Initiative received from CCCC faculty, staff, and local community members, and also for the incredible optimism that people displayed in their support and practice during the short holiday season.

The first on my long list of people to thank are Dr. Brian Merritt, Vice President of Student Learning, and Ashley Tittemore, Executive Director of College Access Programs. Both encouraged the follow through of the Holiday Gift Assistance program and provided optimism and vision in how the project could be completed. Christa Mashburn, Business Service Coordinator, designed a beautifully colored flyer and had it printed in record time. Kathy Sheffield and Willie Palme, Mail Room and Print Shop assistants in the Copy Center, helped in getting the material completed and ready to go. The TRiO staff provided me with leads to military families with dependent children and helped in the outreach to families from Lee, Harnett, and Chatham counties.

I want to thank Wendy Harrington, Building Maintenance, for a second time. She found the perfect boxes to wrap as faux presents to be placed under the Christmas tree. Susan Carlson, in ECD Student Services, was the first to volunteer her services, Melanie Yarborough, Receptionist, displayed a friendly demeanor and willingness to help in the Science building, and Sherri Reynolds in the Financial Aid department found some very needed space to store our new and donated gifts. Mary Ann Gaster and Consuela Blaizes in the Nursing department listened to my marketing pitch and supported the process as best they could. In addition, our TRiO staff and faculty, Tim Peedin, Diana Cagle, Wilson Lester, Karen Sides, as well as our community partner Della Newkirk at the Siler City Campus, unselfishly demonstrated their effort to help and support the Holiday Gift initiative.

Thank you Lena Guisewite and Stacey Gonzales. Lisa Baker, Dean of Health Sciences; Jon Matthews, Associate Provost of Harnett County; Stephen Athans, Dean of Vocational & Technical Training; Robin Walker, Program Auditor; Lisa Brown in Developmental Studies; Jill Gillette, Donna Boykin and Martha Wilkie,assistant administrators in the curriculum department, all played their parts in supporting the program.

In the outer community, Marilyn Green from Helping Hands in Sanford provided toys. Larry Lingenfelter and Leon Jackson from NC Department of Commerce in Sanford also referred families. What I will remember, as an NCVetscorps member, is the quick response in providing gifts to the children in such a short period of time. We met our goal because of the support from CCCC staff and faculty. Thank you all for making the 2015 Holiday Gift Assistance program a bright possibility for our children today who may one day be future students at CCCC.

We regretfully announce the passing of Jessica Peek Scott's father, Randy Lee Peek. He was 58 years old and passed away Jan. 12 at his home. Services were held at the Carter Funeral Home and interment in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

We regretfully announce the passing of Rosalind Cross's Aunt, Pastor Emma L. Shaw of Erwin. She was 73 years old and passed away Jan. 12. Services were held at Bibleway Holiness Church and interment at Bibleway Memorial Gardens.
