Congratulations November Employee of the Month: Dr. Linda Scuiletti

Linda Scuiletti, the "Starfish Lady," is always promoting CCCC in her work, daily life, and in her duties on committees with other state agencies. Linda is a great role model for all of us. She has been very sick this year, but could not wait to get back to her job at CCCC. Even after all she has been through physically, she still produces valuable, concise, and highly detailed work.

Her dedication to excellence and promoting CCCC's mission is exemplar. She uses the college's mission and vision to guide her department's standards and policies. Her mission is to promote the college and others in order to keep CCCC a role model for other colleges. Her commitment to excellence, and going the extra mile to get others involved in keeping our college at the forefront of education and innovation, is remarkable and to be admired. Linda is not only highly intelligent, but she is warm and friendly - always ready with a smile. Recently, while at her doctor's appointment, she sent out an email from her phone to her department promoting a college event. She is a true friend to the college and her colleagues in every way!

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh PA, but am so happy to have called North Carolina home for the past 12 years. My dad was an educational administrator for the Pittsburgh Public Schools and my mom taught piano lessons in our home. They still live in Pittsburgh. I have four younger sisters. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and a Certificate in Community College Leadership from the Maricopa College System's Academy for Community College Leadership Training and Development. After moving to North Carolina, I earned a master's and doctorate degree in Adult and Community College Education from NC State.

I spent the first ten years of my career working as an industrial/manufacturing engineer in the pharmaceutical industry and for several research and consulting firms. Following an interlude to raise my young family, I began a career in education, which is truly the work of my heart. I served as an instructor of electronics, technical mathematics, and technical physics, and ultimately Chair of the School of Technology at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, MI.

I've worked at CCCC for five wonderful years now, and it has truly been the best job I've ever had! I look forward to coming to work every morning and knowing that what we do really does make a difference! But most of all, I treasure my wonderful colleagues and friends at the college - how blessed I am to be part of such an incredible team!

I currently serves as Associate Vice President for Student Learning and Strategic Planning, and SACSCOC Accreditation Liaison, at CCCC. In this role I oversee the college's regional accreditation process, institutional research, assessment, planning, grants and strategic initiatives, student success center, academic assistance center, writing and reading center, student outreach and recruiting, center for teaching and learning, and evening college. My previous roles over the past four years at Central Carolina have included Dean of Institutional Effectiveness, Director of Institutional Effectiveness, and Coordinator of Institutional Effectiveness and Research. I also serve as Chair of the North Carolina Community Colleges Performance Partnership, a statewide initiative aimed at helping colleges boost student success and improve performance measures results.

I am so grateful for my wonderful family, which is truly my greatest blessing. My husband Frank and I live in Cary. Frank works for the NC Community College System Office in Raleigh, and is finishing his doctorate this year. My daughter Mandy and her husband Mike live nearby, with grandchildren Dylan (11) and Reese (3). We love to spoil them! My daughter Sarah and son Michael also graduated from Notre Dame. All three of us were proud members of the Band of the Fighting Irish; I played the clarinet and they both played the mellophone. Sarah is a state prosecuting attorney in Virginia, and Michael is looking forward to heading off to medical school next fall.

My family and I love to travel a spend time outdoors. When my kids were little, we went on a 30-day 10,000-mile car trip to many national parks out west, which was fabulous! More recently we have been enjoying cruises, and hope to travel to Europe in the coming years.

I want to thank everyone at CCCC for making this such a special place! We truly are united by our heartfelt efforts to help our students succeed. I love walking anywhere on campus and seeing so many bright smiles and caring people! It is an honor to be part of the CCCC family. Thank you!

Celebrating American Heroes

"Celebrating American Heroes" was the theme of the Veterans Day event at Central Carolina Community College's Siler City Center.

Featured on the program were the 82nd Airborne Division's All-American Chorus from Fort Bragg. The guest speaker was Chief of Police Gary T. Tyson of Siler City.

Holiday Greetings

The holiday season is fast approaching and 4CNC will be filming our annual greetings to run on the cable channel. Filming for CCCC faculty, staff and student organizations has already begun!

Greetings can be any length with the preference being under a minute. The average is 10-15 seconds. We will add "snow" and music in post production. You, of course, may word it any way you wish, but these do run from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve so "Happy Holidays" is most factually correct.

Filming times from Nov. 9 to Nov. 30 include:

• Mondays 10 a.m. - Noon
• Tuesdays 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
• Wednesdays 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
• Thursdays 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.

If you absolutely can't make one of those dates or times we may be able to fit you in some other time, but it's not guaranteed.

We can come to you or you can come to the studio. If you have a student organization (student council, PBL, etc) please make sure they are aware as well.

2nd annual Halloween Costume Contest

The Social Committee hosted the 2nd annual Halloween Costume Contest on the Chatham, Harnett, and Lee campuses this year. It was a fun filled two-day event that encouraged faculty and staff to really get into character!

Faculty/Staff were able to guess how long it took to print the 3 dimensional pumpkin and enter their answer for a chance to win a prize. Daniel Loges and Haley Thomas won those awards as their guesses were close to the frightening 10 hours it took to print!

The Social Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in this event and we hope you will consider taking part again next year! Keep an eye out for our next two sponsored events (decorating for Professional Development Day on December 16th and "ACC at the Quad C" in March).

Continuing Education Open House Invitation!

"This office doesn't handle that, but I can transfer you to someone who might be able to help you."

"I'm sorry that you've been transferred to two different offices, but you will need to leave another voicemail."

How many times have we heard those kinds of responses on the telephone while seeking help? To say those responses are frustrating to a customer or student would be an understatement.

The Student Support Center (SSC) was created to quell frustration and to provide personalized service and access to a one-stop system making it easier for Continuing Education students to navigate the college. The SSC is a centralized resource to call upon for concise, accurate, and complete information.

The Center can assist with any questions regarding Continuing Education classes (books, materials, supply lists), WebAdvisor, call-in registration, drop/add requests, ed2go (online instruction center), class reminder phone calls, and transcript requests. The goal of SSC is to provide exceptional customer service, not only to Continuing Education students, but to any CCCC student or staff member that contacts the Center for assistance.

On Nov. 19, the SSC will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an Open House. It is important to SSC staff that the celebration includes all those that have contributed to the success of the Center. "It would have been impossible to have reached so many students and customers during this first year without the cooperation of CCCC staff, students, and members of our community," said Dr. Pamela Senegal, CCCC's Vice President of Economic and Community Development. "We are very appreciative of the support we continue to receive."

The Open House will begin at 2 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. The SSC staff encourages internal and external partners to drop-in during this time period as their schedules allow.

The Center is located in Room 11 of Budd Hall on the Lee County Campus. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Center can be reached by phone at (919) 718-7500. The Center's email address is conedsupport@cccc.edu.

University Transfer Day

University Transfer Day will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will take place on the Lee County campus in the gym. Representatives from approximately 25 senior educational institutions will visit the college to provide our students with information on admissions and transfer options.

Cougar shuttles will be available to transport Chatham and Harnett County students to the Lee County campus for the event. Students must reserve a seat on the shuttle. Shuttle reservations are made at www.cccc.edu/homepageDetails/2015/2015-FallUnivTranDay/.

Please encourage your students, regardless of major, to attend. We look forward to seeing you at the event!

Tips for Making Word Documents Accessible

The 1973 Rehabilitation Act requires public institutions make all services accessible to those with disabilities. There are many facets to this law and I want to introduce you to the basics over the next few issues of Cougar Bytes.

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act specifically covers Electronic and Information Technology, which includes multimedia, websites, and associated material such as Microsoft Word documents and PDFs. I am happy to hear some departments at CCCC are already working toward total accessibility. For those of you that are not familiar with document accessibility, I want to provide some tips.

When making Microsoft Word Documents, please keep in mind that students may be using text-to-speech software. Crafting smooth document navigation can easily become a part of your document creation process.

As a first step, consider checking your document's accessibility by simply clicking the File tab, select "Check for Issues," and then "Check for Accessibility."

This will produce an error report to the right of your document. From there you can better tackle accessibility. In the next Cougar Bytes issue, we will begin to fix some of the errors you might find!

CCCC EOP Silent Auction

For over 30 years, the CCCC EOP (Educational Office Professionals) has held a "Silent Auction" the first week of December in the Administrative Board Room to raise funds to support our Scholarship Fund. This year the Silent Auction will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We would love to have any items you would like to donate to the cause. You can bring your items to the Board Room on Tuesday, Dec. 1, anytime from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.or on Wednesday morning, Dec. 2, from 8 a.m.

If the door is locked, you may get the key from the Switchboard Operator, put your item at the front counter, and one of our EOPs will log it in for you. Just make sure to put your name on it. Every year, we get donations from different areas of the college. This helps us raise more money to fund our scholarships. This year, we awarded two scholarships at $750 each to Melissa Basham (Nursing) and Allison Falbe (Dental)

So everyone - come and see our items - we will have refreshments for bidders and support both EOPs and Student Scholarships.

This amazing day gave Upward Bound Math and Science participants an opportunity to explore the college's academic programs, tour the campus, and connect with students and faculty of the Spartan Nation. Next stop: UNC-Chapel Hill for a Pre-College Expo Day!

Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale

Phi Beta Lambda is starting its new annual fundraising event. This year the chapter will be selling Christmas trees and wreaths. The trees will be pre-ordered and members will go to Boone to pick up the fresh trees and deliver back on campus the first week of December. The event will take place on all three campuses. And for every five trees we sell, the chapter will donate a tree to SGA and the Angel Tree. Another great opportunity to support our students.

Library Surveys
The Library is conducting our fall semester Library Survey from Nov. 13 to Nov. 30. Results will be used to improve library services and resources, as well as for SACSCOC documentation purposes. Thanks in advance for your input on how we can improve. Take the survey now.

New Fax Services for Students
The Libraries at Lee and Harnett are pleased to offer new fax services for students. This was approved by the Board of Trustees in their October meeting. Fax services will be $1.00 per page to send or receive. Please share this information with your students so that they are aware of this new library service.

New Reserves Fees
The Board of Trustees also approved a new overdue fee for high-demand reserve materials. This will alleviate issues with reserve items not being returned on time or at all, and it will allow more students the opportunity to check out reserve materials at the time they need them. Fees will be $1.00 per day late.

Library Professional Development Workshops Coming Soon
The Library has partnered with the Center for Teaching and Learning, and with Human Resources, to offer a series of professional development workshops in the spring semester 2016. Faculty were surveyed earlier this semester to determine which topics were of most interest. The top three choices selected were:

• Copyright & Fair Use in the Digital Age
• Integrating Streaming Videos into Your Courses
• Library Resources for the DE Instructor

Lee County's Angel Tree from Salvation Army Ready

CCCC Colleagues,

Each year for many years Bobby Wicker coordinated getting CCCC employees connected to the Salvation Army's Christmas JOY Program in Lee County. With his retirement, I assumed the role as our campus contact in 2013. This program is an opportunity to make the holidays special and memorable for deserving children in our community. Interested individuals and groups agree to sponsor a child (an "angel") by purchasing things like clothing, coats, and toys. This year bicycles and electronics are not on their wish lists. Children range in age from birth to twelve.

Last week I received a few dozen angels for adoption and could use your support. Last year CCCC adopted more than 30 angels! Some departments, buildings, and peer groups at the college pool their resources to adopt an angel in lieu of gift exchanges on campus. Some individuals at CCCC wish to support an angel, but don't want to do the shopping. In these cases, I can do as I have in the past and do the shopping for you.

As a child with little resources, I received my holiday gifts through this program 30 years ago, and my heart holds a special place for it. Participation is a remarkable way to embody a spirit of service this time of year. Gifts will be due to Sanford's First Presbyterian Church on Hawkins Ave. on Dec. 9. You can drop them off, or I can arrange for a pick-up and drop-off for you.

Bereavements

We regretfully inform everyone that Rosita Davis' mother, Lila Jewel Lineberry, passed earlier this week. There will be a viewing at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City on Friday, Nov. 13 from noon to 2 p.m. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Please keep Rosita and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

We regretfully announce the passing of Dr. Mills' father, Marvin Walter Mills, 97 years of age, on Oct. 29. In lieu of sending flowers, the faculty has made a donation to Gideon's International, in memory of his father. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Dr. Kim Browning or Casey Patterson.

We regretfully announce the passing of Danette Foster's brother, Dennis Sterling Walls, on Oct. 22. His funeral was held at Antioch Baptist Church and burial followed at Broadway Town Cemetery. Please consider sending condolensces to Danette's home, 1089 River Ridge Drive, Broadway, NC.
